  3. Cleaning up Idea is to leave content available to employers (current or prospective) that showcases who you truly are. What do you want them to know about you? Put yourself in their shoes. You’re the hiring manager for a new position at your company. A position you’ll be managing. Would you want to manage yourself, and do the search results showcase you as a quality worker/person? Write down the URLs for any content that paints you in a negative light, and then get to work deleting. This is not an easy process If anything out-of-the-ordinary shows up in search (photos of you and your friends at a bar in a compromising situations you need to take steps to delete it, negative mentions of you by others, as well as any political or religious views (controversial or turned into a heated debate), Friends will tag you, so be sure to keep tabs on photos you’ve been tagged in – You can be very careful, but your friends (and family) may not be looking out for your best interests Tagging got me in trouble - Share Myspace experience – Hoops jumped through to remove page – Old images (not flattering) Not always an easy situation. Sometimes as simple as sending an email, other times you deal with the MySpace type situation. Don’t delete it all Ok to have content that showcases your personality Companies don’t want to hire someone who won’t fit in with their culture and can’t connect with other adults So…what should you do once you’re cleaned up?

Facebook I like to suggest keeping personal, not business related This is where you get to showcase your personality – Again, employers want to know you have a life and you’re able to connect with other adults – They want to hire people with experience not only in business but in life The more diverse your experience in life, the more well rounded and open minded you’re likely to be in a place of business However, you should keep it clean and post photos that paint you in a positive light Tags - Friends are notorious for posting images of others in compromising situations (don’t be afraid to offend and tell them to take them down, or at the very least untag yourself) Twitter This tool is great for showing that you’re actively seeking education within your field This shows employers that you are constantly seeking improvement and to gain new perspectives into how you can approach business more effectively Post articles from authoritative sources and get involved in conversations about your field Articles can be from more mainstream sites like Forbes, Inc, and Entrepreneur, or they can be more niche and specific to your industry (good to mix it up) Retweet and like post to let others know you’re listening, mention influencers by their Twitter handle when you post content written by them or about them, and don’t be afraid to direct message or mention potential employers, most will be impressed that you did Join Twitter chats and engage with questions Other Channels should follow the same pattern. Are they professionally focused on focused more on the personal aspects of your life? Treat them as such.
  12. Concept When employers and business contacts search for you online, they are looking for evidence of the value you’d add to their organization Critical to have content show up that showcases what you can offer I want to present a couple of effective ways that you can position yourself as a leader in the conversation surrounding your field Today I’ll focus on two effective forms of content that can help brand you as an expert in your field. Blogging and video.
  13. Blogging An effective way to showcase your expertise in a particular field Easy to start a blog Wordpress and other user-friendly options No coding involved Nice templates Make sure to follow these tactics: Write about a subject you know well, otherwise you’ll have the opposite effect and be called out as an impostor Get someone to edit your work (writing is not a skill possessed by many business professionals) Video Marketing – Short and sweet and very engaging. Click on the image to watch Jay Baer video. Not that difficult to pull this off, but follow same rules with blogging and have a plan.
  14. Influencers These are the top minds in your field, people who hold high standing and authority in their field and offer excellent connections LinkedIn and Twitter are great places for reaching out and makes connections with them Should be someone with authority in your chosen field, whose status you hope to achieve in the future in your career Should be active online (social media, blogging, etc.) Add value for them without asking anything in return (share their posts, mention their work, etc., and make sure they’re aware) Focus on establishing rapport before asking for anything in return Once you finally ask for something, start by asking for a quote for an article you’re working on, nothing too in depth Having their name in your article adds instant authority and showcases your connection to industry experts and your ability to network As you build this relationship, the goal is for the influencer to begin sharing your content, mentioning you, etc. – Adds reach to your expertise Publications Similar to the value of the influencer, publishing work on authoritative sites, or offering quotes or Q&A sessions are great ways to further the authority of your brand SEO value (if you have a blog) No blog still adds values because these sites are likely to show up in searches both for your name and for the subject matter if the article receives enough attention These publications are read by those who are seeking to hire someone like you, so when they come across an article by you, and they connect the dots to your resume, it makes it all that much easier to sell yourself in an interview, or even go to your boss for a raise The fact that your expertise is out there on display opens you up to recruiters, and you can use that as leverage in any salary negotiations or offers of promotion
