INTRODUCTION
 In the enterprise, a system’s energy consumption has become a
significant portion of its total lifetime cost. For example, after
three years, a 120 Watt desktop costs an additional $360: for a
$500 desktop, energy constitutes 40 percent of its 3 year total
cost of ownership. Motivated by this trend, green computing has
emerged as a new area of research with a focus on
understanding and reducing the energy consumption of everyday
computing systems. The search for green computing has inspired
a wide spectrum of interesting software systems research.
What Is Green Computing?
 The study and practice of designing, manufacturing,
using, and disposing of computers, servers, and
associated subsystems efficiently and effectively with
minimal or no impact on the environment."
Why Green Computing?
 Growing public environmental awareness
 Increasing impacts on environmental and human health
 Corporate social responsibility
 To minimize the use of hazardous IT/computing products.
 To make the computing process more eco-friendly.
 To make the computing process energy efficiency.
 Reducing travel requirements.
 Recycling of computing wastage product.
 Purchasing and using green energy.
 Save money due to reduced utility cost.
 Reducing the use of papers.
 Designing good algorithms for better computer’s efficiency.
History of Green Computing
 In 1992, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency launched Energy
Star, a voluntary labeling program which is designed to promote
and recognize energy-efficiency in monitors, climate control
equipment, and other technologies. This resulted in the
widespread adoption of sleep mode among consumer electronics.
The term "green computing" was probably coined shortly after the
Energy Star program began; there are several USENET posts dating
back to 1992 which use the term in this manner. Concurrently, the
Swedish organization TCO Development launched the TCO
Certification program to promote low magnetic and electrical
emissions from CRT-based computer displays; this program was
later expanded to include criteria on energy consumption,
ergonomics, and the use of hazardous materials in construction.
APPROACHES TO GREEN COMPUTING
 Green Use –
Reducing the power usage of computers and its periphery subsystems and
using them in an eco-friendly manner. Also adopting virtualization reducing
the need of energy.
 Green Disposal –
Recycling and reusing existing equipment, properly disposing the wasted
IT/computing materials, electronic equipment etc.
 Green Design –
Designing energy efficient as well as effective systems which have a minimal
impact on the green environment.
 Green manufacturing –
Manufacturing Biodegradable materials, also manufacturing long usable,
recyclable products and reducing wastage during manufacturing process.
Applications of Green Computing
 Green Wireless Network.
 Energy Management in Data Centre’s.
 Green Cloud Computing.
 Green Parallel Computing.
Advantages
 Reduced energy consumption.
 Maintaining green environment.
 Cost-effective computing.
 Conservation of resources.
Disadvantages:
 Rapid change in technology.
 Initial implementation may be costly.
 Requires care from user.
 Requires deep understanding of green computing concept.
Technologies green computing
 VIA Technologies, a Taiwanese company that manufactures motherboard
chipsets, CPUs, and other computer hardware, introduced its initiative for
"green computing" in 2001.
 A. Carbon-free computing
One of the VIA Technologies‘ideas is to reduce the "carbon footprint" of users —
the amount of greenhouse gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide
(CO2).
 B. Solar Computing
Amid the international race toward alternative-energy sources, VIA is setting
its eyes on the sun, and the company's Solar Computing initiative is a
significant part of its green-computing projects.
 C. Lead-Free and RoHS computing
In February 2003, the European Union adopted the Restriction of Hazardous
Substances Directive (RoHS). The legislation restricts the use of six hazardous
materials in the manufacture of various types of electronic and electrical
equipment.

 D. Energy-efficient computing
A central goal of VIA‘s green-computing initiative is the development of
energy-efficient platforms for low-power, small-form-factor (SFF)
computing devices.
 E. vision through the pc-1 initiative
VIA isn‘t focusing only on the technological aspects of its eco-friendly
devices, it‘s also taking a look at their applications. The VIA pc-1
initiative seeks to enable the next 1 billion people to get connected, by
providing wider access to computing and communications technologies.
Future Research
The effect of this shift is that every technique which improves overall data center
efficiency, regardless of its classification as efficiency or usage reduction, now becomes
highly relevant to enterprise computing efficiency.
 1-Operating Systems
Hybrid computing represents a chance to make new use of decades of process migration
research and multicore process placement.
 2- Virtualization
Virtualization is a major strategy to reduce data center power consumption. In
virtualization, one physical server hosts multiple virtual servers
 3- Networks
Anything that reduces the effect of network latency improves hybrid computing. One
approach is to hide latency by improving applications that provide interactive access to
remote applications, such as NX and VNC
Future Research (cont.)
 4 -Hardware
A future where desktop-class processors are only used almost entirely for
multiplexed servers in data centers (again, assume traditional desktops have
gone away) implies that the idle power rating of a CPU is no longer relevant.
 5-Policy
Hardware and software modifications – combined with a push for power
fficiency – change our models of computer usage, and corporate and
government policies have to not only adapt but also incentivize these
changes.

Many governmental agencies have continued to implement standards and regulations
that encourage green computing.
2-From the Industry
Climate Savers Computing Initiative : CSCI is an effort to reduce the electric
power consumption of PCs in active and inactive states.
-Green Computing Impact Organization, Inc. : GCIO is a non-profit
organization dedicated to assisting the end-users of computing products in being
environmentally responsible.
Green Electronics Council : The Green Electronics Council offers the
Electronic Products Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) to assist in the
purchase of "green" computing systems.
The Green Grid : It is a global consortium dedicated to advancing energy
efficiency in data centers and business computing ecosystems.
Tips for Green Home Computing
 •Don’t check your email on a PC as far as possible – use a mobile device
 •Never leave your PC switched on at the wall, or on standby
 •Take that CRT monitor to the recycling centre.
 •Always switch off speakers, modem, monitor at the wall socket if not using
 •Use natural ventilation in the computer room
 •Only connect to the internet when you know you will use the connection
 •Get all family members to log on to the WiFi network at the same time
 •Consider buying a newer, more energy efficient computer or low power notebook
 •Surf at cafes where they only have a single WiFi modem
 •User blade servers that run very low temperature chips to save cooling
 •Tell employees to switch everything off at night
 •Use smart thermostats in the server room to save cost
 •Use low power thin client PCs that use on-demand applications
 •Switch to LCD screens to cut power usage
 •Only buy Green label PCs and hardware that can be completely recycled.
 •Recycle all internal paper, and reprint on the back of used single side waste
Green Computing- Embrace a Secure Future
 ICT has now become an important department for the success of any
organisation. Most of the businesses rely on the many benefits computers
provide by using computing resources to perform a multitude of tasks,
including work, research, teaching and learning. However the IT
department is usually always the one department that uses the most
amount of power which in turn is an excessive amount of overhead for a
business as well as a source for toxic waste. Making IT “Green” can not
only save money but help save our world by making it a better place
through reducing and/or eliminating wasteful practices and using
nontoxic materials.
Examples for some companies work to this goal
 Google
Google’s five step plan
1. Minimize electricity used by servers
2. Reduce the energy used by the data center facilities themselves
3. Conserve precious fresh water by using recycled water instead
4. Reuse or recycle all electronic equipment that leaves our data centers
5. Engage with our peers to advance smarter energy practices
 IBM
In May 2007, IBM unveiled Project Big Green -- a re-direction of $1 billion USD per
year across its businesses to increase energy efficiency.
 Sony
Sony has developed an environmentally friendly prototype battery that runs on
sugars and can generate enough electricity to power a music player and a pair of
speakers, the Japanese company said.
Energy Use of PCs
 CPU uses 120 Watts
 CRT uses 150 Watts
 8 hours of usage, 5 days a week = 562 Kwatts
 for a large institution, say a university of 40,000 students and
faculty, the power bill for just computers can come to $2
million / year
 Energy use comes from
 electrical current to run the CPU, motherboard, memory
 running the fan and spinning the disk(s)
 monitor (CRTs consume more power than any other computer
component)
GREEN CLOUD COMPUTING
 The term combines the words green -- meaning environmentally friendly -- and cloud,
the traditional symbol for the Internet and the shortened name for a type of service
delivery model known as cloud computing.

  • 4. INTRODUCTION  In the enterprise, a system’s energy consumption has become a significant portion of its total lifetime cost. For example, after three years, a 120 Watt desktop costs an additional $360: for a $500 desktop, energy constitutes 40 percent of its 3 year total cost of ownership. Motivated by this trend, green computing has emerged as a new area of research with a focus on understanding and reducing the energy consumption of everyday computing systems. The search for green computing has inspired a wide spectrum of interesting software systems research.
  • 5. What Is Green Computing?  The study and practice of designing, manufacturing, using, and disposing of computers, servers, and associated subsystems efficiently and effectively with minimal or no impact on the environment."

Why Green Computing?  Growing public environmental awareness  Increasing impacts on environmental and human health  Corporate social responsibility  To minimize the use of hazardous IT/computing products.  To make the computing process more eco-friendly.  To make the computing process energy efficiency.  Reducing travel requirements.  Recycling of computing wastage product.  Purchasing and using green energy.  Save money due to reduced utility cost.  Reducing the use of papers.  Designing good algorithms for better computer’s efficiency.

History of Green Computing  In 1992, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency launched Energy Star, a voluntary labeling program which is designed to promote and recognize energy-efficiency in monitors, climate control equipment, and other technologies. This resulted in the widespread adoption of sleep mode among consumer electronics. The term "green computing" was probably coined shortly after the Energy Star program began; there are several USENET posts dating back to 1992 which use the term in this manner. Concurrently, the Swedish organization TCO Development launched the TCO Certification program to promote low magnetic and electrical emissions from CRT-based computer displays; this program was later expanded to include criteria on energy consumption, ergonomics, and the use of hazardous materials in construction.
  • 8. APPROACHES TO GREEN COMPUTING  Green Use – Reducing the power usage of computers and its periphery subsystems and using them in an eco-friendly manner. Also adopting virtualization reducing the need of energy.  Green Disposal – Recycling and reusing existing equipment, properly disposing the wasted IT/computing materials, electronic equipment etc.  Green Design – Designing energy efficient as well as effective systems which have a minimal impact on the green environment.  Green manufacturing – Manufacturing Biodegradable materials, also manufacturing long usable, recyclable products and reducing wastage during manufacturing process.

Technologies green computing  VIA Technologies, a Taiwanese company that manufactures motherboard chipsets, CPUs, and other computer hardware, introduced its initiative for "green computing" in 2001.  A. Carbon-free computing One of the VIA Technologies‘ideas is to reduce the "carbon footprint" of users — the amount of greenhouse gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide (CO2).  B. Solar Computing Amid the international race toward alternative-energy sources, VIA is setting its eyes on the sun, and the company's Solar Computing initiative is a significant part of its green-computing projects.  C. Lead-Free and RoHS computing In February 2003, the European Union adopted the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS). The legislation restricts the use of six hazardous materials in the manufacture of various types of electronic and electrical equipment.

Energy-efficient computing A central goal of VIA‘s green-computing initiative is the development of energy-efficient platforms for low-power, small-form-factor (SFF) computing devices.  E. vision through the pc-1 initiative VIA isn‘t focusing only on the technological aspects of its eco-friendly devices, it‘s also taking a look at their applications. The VIA pc-1 initiative seeks to enable the next 1 billion people to get connected, by providing wider access to computing and communications technologies.

Future Research The effect of this shift is that every technique which improves overall data center efficiency, regardless of its classification as efficiency or usage reduction, now becomes highly relevant to enterprise computing efficiency.  1-Operating Systems Hybrid computing represents a chance to make new use of decades of process migration research and multicore process placement.  2- Virtualization Virtualization is a major strategy to reduce data center power consumption. In virtualization, one physical server hosts multiple virtual servers  3- Networks Anything that reduces the effect of network latency improves hybrid computing. One approach is to hide latency by improving applications that provide interactive access to remote applications, such as NX and VNC

Future Research (cont.)  4 -Hardware A future where desktop-class processors are only used almost entirely for multiplexed servers in data centers (again, assume traditional desktops have gone away) implies that the idle power rating of a CPU is no longer relevant.  5-Policy Hardware and software modifications – combined with a push for power fficiency – change our models of computer usage, and corporate and government policies have to not only adapt but also incentivize these changes.

Governments and Industry Initiative 1 -From the Government Many governmental agencies have continued to implement standards and regulations that encourage green computing. 2-From the Industry Climate Savers Computing Initiative : CSCI is an effort to reduce the electric power consumption of PCs in active and inactive states. -Green Computing Impact Organization, Inc. : GCIO is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting the end-users of computing products in being environmentally responsible. Green Electronics Council : The Green Electronics Council offers the Electronic Products Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) to assist in the purchase of "green" computing systems. The Green Grid : It is a global consortium dedicated to advancing energy efficiency in data centers and business computing ecosystems.

Tips for Green Home Computing  •Don’t check your email on a PC as far as possible – use a mobile device  •Never leave your PC switched on at the wall, or on standby  •Take that CRT monitor to the recycling centre.  •Always switch off speakers, modem, monitor at the wall socket if not using  •Use natural ventilation in the computer room  •Only connect to the internet when you know you will use the connection  •Get all family members to log on to the WiFi network at the same time  •Consider buying a newer, more energy efficient computer or low power notebook  •Surf at cafes where they only have a single WiFi modem  •User blade servers that run very low temperature chips to save cooling  •Tell employees to switch everything off at night  •Use smart thermostats in the server room to save cost  •Use low power thin client PCs that use on-demand applications  •Switch to LCD screens to cut power usage  •Only buy Green label PCs and hardware that can be completely recycled.  •Recycle all internal paper, and reprint on the back of used single side waste
  • 21. Green Computing- Embrace a Secure Future  ICT has now become an important department for the success of any organisation. Most of the businesses rely on the many benefits computers provide by using computing resources to perform a multitude of tasks, including work, research, teaching and learning. However the IT department is usually always the one department that uses the most amount of power which in turn is an excessive amount of overhead for a business as well as a source for toxic waste. Making IT “Green” can not only save money but help save our world by making it a better place through reducing and/or eliminating wasteful practices and using nontoxic materials.
  • 22. Examples for some companies work to this goal  Google Google’s five step plan 1. Minimize electricity used by servers 2. Reduce the energy used by the data center facilities themselves 3. Conserve precious fresh water by using recycled water instead 4. Reuse or recycle all electronic equipment that leaves our data centers 5. Engage with our peers to advance smarter energy practices  IBM In May 2007, IBM unveiled Project Big Green -- a re-direction of $1 billion USD per year across its businesses to increase energy efficiency.  Sony Sony has developed an environmentally friendly prototype battery that runs on sugars and can generate enough electricity to power a music player and a pair of speakers, the Japanese company said.

Energy Use of PCs  CPU uses 120 Watts  CRT uses 150 Watts  8 hours of usage, 5 days a week = 562 Kwatts  for a large institution, say a university of 40,000 students and faculty, the power bill for just computers can come to $2 million / year  Energy use comes from  electrical current to run the CPU, motherboard, memory  running the fan and spinning the disk(s)  monitor (CRTs consume more power than any other computer component)
