Work with Base! - Marketing Leader
1. M A R K E T I N G L E A D E R
Come and work with the amazing team at Base Commons
2. LOOK UP, KEEP CLIMBING
We have grown a lot in the last 6 months and we’re at an exciting nexus. Now we’re on the lookout for an
Marketing Leader.
This part-time, flexible, Melbourne-based role will begin in June. It would be super ideal for someone
who enjoys crafting inspiring experiences, connecting with inspiring people and gets a buzz from managing
projects.
Maybe this is you, or maybe it’s someone you know. Keep reading to hear more about what it’s like to work
with us, what this position entails, and how to apply.
Oh and applications are due before April 27th 2017 - but scroll through for the details.
4. It’s exciting that you’re reading this
and considering working with us. This
little presentation or deck (if you’d
like to call it that), is here to give you
some insight into the ‘why, who, how
and what’ we do so you can feel if
it’s a fit. Hopefully you’ll come to the
end and know for yourself whether
it definitely is, or maybe not. If you
don’t feel the fit, then that’s great we
probably saved both of us some time.
If you do feel the fit, then we can’t
wait to see what emerges.
We’ve broken this into 3 parts for you:

7. Modern life is becoming an increasingly complex
landscape - interwoven by work, life and play.
With the World Health Organisation predicting
that over 70% of the human population will
be living in urban environments by 2050 and
that depression will be the leading cause of
morbidity by 2030, we need a new way way of
organising ourselves.
We are a community of people ourselves, who
look outside and notice an inter-generational
yearning for re-connection. Re-connecting with
each other, a sense of home, a sense of purpose
and a sense of self.
WHY WE’RE IN BUSINESS
Co·liv·ing / noun
Shared housing designed to support a purpose-driven life.
A modern, urban lifestyle that values openness, sharing, and collaboration.
Synonyms: intentional living, intentional community, cohousing, modern nomad.
8. PERSONAL GROWTH
We recognise that as much as we need
cultural change and systems-change,
we also need to grow in certain ways as
individuals. Growing as an individual and
becoming more self-aware is something
almost naturally occurring when we exist in
community.
CONNECTION
As a community, we like to make sure that
in everything we do, we are consciously and
intentionally creating space for connection,
sharing and collaboration. Turning the
attention to the community as much as
possible.
CREATIVE EXPRESSION
Creating space for our community to
express themselves creatively is very
important. Whether it be music, art,
business or any other form; this is where
our community grows and innovation takes
place!
SOCIAL INNOVATION
As a purpose-driven organisation, we are
very conscious of the tangible impact we
are creating both in our work and in the
ideas that ¯emerge from our spaces. Always
aiming to have an impact beyond our doors
and our community.
OUR CORE PILLARS
WHAT WE DO
We see it as our mission to facilitate curated community experiences
and regenerative co-living spaces. Spaces that cultivate personal growth,
connection, creative expression and social innovation. Places and spaces
that foster a more joyful and sustainable existence.
9. HOW WE DO IT
We see it as our mission to facilitate curated community experiences
and regenerative co-living spaces. Spaces that cultivate personal growth,
connection, creative expression and social innovation. Places and spaces
that foster a more joyful and sustainable existence.
CURATED EXPERIENCES LIVEABLE SPACES ETHICAL INVESTMENTS
10. Our community is intentionally diverse and is aligned with our 4 guiding pillars. We aim for our events and
spaces to be a nexus of the wellbeing, sustainability and startup/innovation communities.
You’ll work with people who are 25 years old and those who are 58 years old. Everyone you work with will be
driven by the possibility of a sustainable future and will be very open to participating.
WHO WE WORK WITH
11. Al is our founder and has been in
business since he was a teeny tiny 12 year
old. He loves connecting with people
in funny ways, pushing us all to grow a
little more and always keeps us aligned
with our vision. He works to facilitate
the community’s growth, the culture of
the community (and our team) and also
does a lot of our forward-facing media
and thought leadership. Oh and he loves
yoga, music and Messina ice-cream!
Dani is great at building and managing
partnerships, making lists and generally
getting stuff done! She overviews all
of our projects, is the glue between
them all and makes sure that we are on
track and all partners and stakeholders
are satisfied. She also loves connecting
with others in a meaningful way and
making sure that our community and
their experience is number one priority.
She loves hiking, writing, jazz gigs and
drinking red wine in her spare time!
James knows a thing or two about
designing spaces having spent much
of his studies including his thesis
contemplating how we can live better
closer together in our cities. Working in
one of Melbourne’s leading sustainable
architecture firms he brings this breadth
and depth of knowledge to the team
and will help synthesise the design
led research we undertake with our
community. When he isn’t architecting
he enjoys shooting hoops with friends.
Now Owen was the missing piece to the
puzzle for a while. Having worked in the
United States on a series of high growth
companies including Common Living
(you may have heard of that co-living
company in the US?), he moved back to
Australia and came straight to working
with us. He knows the numbers inside
and out, it’s his jam. A little hint, don’t
ever say that numbers are boring to him!
Al did that accidentally and learned how
much Owen loves them. That’s his thing!

12. As a team we will definitely be supporting
you along the way, but there are a few things
we’d love you to ‘own’ and be the go-to
person for.
1. Actively reaching out to new
communities and organisations in the area to
share the services of our space
2. Fulfilling our marketing and
promotions strategy for the Weave event
series for our fortnightly and monthly events
3. Working with Louise (our social
media guru) to engage our community
online
4. Managing our CRM system and
sending our monthly newsletters
Things we’ll need you to be across:
Managing a project
Marketing and promotion is fun, and it
is also an art form. We have an existing
pipeline of projects we need to fulfil to keep
the vision alive and so we do need to work to
a loose schedule. We also want to create space
for you to fill with your creative ideas also.
Online communications
We use Slack to manage our team
communications, as we really only get
to work in-person 1 day a week. When
we get into the space, this will be quite
different though! You will need to be able to
familiarise yourself with this software so we
can work fluidly together.
CRM softwares
We use Mailchimp currently but may be
looking to transition in the next month
or so. Ideally you will have experience
with these softwares and no how to craft
an engaging newsletter, track metrics and
constantly improve our systems.
Be responsible and responsive
As we manage our communications very
much over Slack and the mobile phone, we
need to make sure that we are responsive and
able to reply back in a timely manner. We
do want everyone to have balance and look
after your own sanity, but when it comes to
meeting our targets, we need to be on it!
YOUR CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
13. We operate modelling of a ‘holocratic’
governance model. This is a new approach
to governance that takes away vertical
hierarchy and brings in project teams;
fostering purpose, mastery and autonomy.
We have project circles, a lead in each
project circle and then possibly a small team
also. Each project circle is responsible for
very specific goals and objectives and they
have creative autonomy to achieve these. As
long as all decisions are made in alignment
with our values and philosophy, and our
targets are met, you can go for it. If you
work best from 2-5am in the mornings,
great! As long as our communication is
f luid and we meet targets, we are all happy.
REMUNERATION:
This will be a volunteer position in
exchange for being able to work from our
space, run events from our space, come to all
events for free (obviously!) and of course in
exchange for experience working with one
of the most fun and awesome-est teams ever!
HOW WE SEE THIS WORKING
WE WANT THIS EXPERIENCE TO BE
FUN, FLEXIBLE AND MEANINGFUL FOR
YOU. SO WHILST WE HAVE SOME HARD
TARGETS AS WE DESIGN THE FUTURE,
WE MAY AS WELL HAVE FUN IN THE
PRESENT!
14. Launching our experimental lab for future-
living.
We are launching our first physical space in
July to become Australia’s first experimental
lab for future-living. This space will be a living
prototype to test what the future of sustainable
living might be like. We have plenty of media
waiting and watching and a community ready
to provide for!
We’ve been running our Weave event series
since March (you may have come to an event)
and have learned a lot! We’ll be launching
our programming again with refined topics,
event-types and from our own space! This
is something you are going to be a big part
of! We’d love to let you take some creative
autonomy to see how out-there and creative we
can get with the types of events we produce.
Playing with some ideas for future public
initiatives
As an organisation with a goal to activate
community, facilitate community culture and
empower Melbourne for sustainable living, we
are playing with the playful idea of some public
installations and guerrilla marketing initiatives.
We’d love to hear your input on some of them.
for yourself within Base Commons:
Part of an inspired and diverse community
A HINT TO THE FUTURE...
RELAUNCHING WEAVE
15. To apply to be our Marketing Leader, we’d love to get to know you in the same way you hopefully now know us.
We really are seeking someone with not only great grades and experience, but first and foremost someone who
is aligned with our philosophy and inspired by the vision. So instead of sending us a boring CV or Resume and
Cover letter we’d ask that you do the following.
START THE JOURNEY
1. Send us a quick letter, video or voice
recording of the favourite event you’ve run, why
it was so great, what was challenging about it and
what you’d do next time. Feel free to go into as
much detail as you can, but obviously please make
it a little succinct
2. Fill us in on WHO you are and WHY you’d
love to be part of Base’s vision in this role. Send
us a video, poem, letter or anything you’d like
that shares a little about yourself with us and why
you’re inspired to be a part.
Once we get your application, Al will be in touch
to set a time for a call so you can get a feel for each
other, and then if it feels right, maybe you’ll met
up in person for another conversation (let’s not
call these ‘interviews!’).
Please send your application material (with any
links to media or content) in one email to Al at
al@basecommons.com. He will be in touch once
he gets your application and to guide you through
the process.
