IBMConnectionsEngagementCenter
Any day of the working week we switch between interactions and collaborations across all levels of our organizations.
We must drive and maintain our own individual productivity to make sure that the tasks we’re responsible for get done.
We need to play our part in the maintenance and running of the teams we are members of.
We have to make sure our department is successful and that we are contributing to our overall mission.
And finally, as good corporate citizens, we must each play our part in developing and evolving our organization.
But increasingly we expect tools designed for individual use to somehow allow us to deliver on all these levels.
Many of us have these kind of tasks and interactions on a weekly, sometimes daily basis.
We have to handle emails, conversations, files, book meetings;
We need to contribute to projects and work with customers;
We need to help manage the throughput and success of the department
And we also need to help develop ourselves with skills acquisition and participating in enterprise-level change objectives.
To make helping people like you even harder, of course we all work in different lines of business and in dramatically different industries.
What’s right for someone in the design department of a software company will not be for someone in the operations team of an airline.
So me must customize and adapt our approach to being better at collaborating and engaging with each other. One size does not fit all, so why are we content to accept this as normal?
And of course, as if all these variables were not enough, we also are presented with what can be a bewildering array of software tools and devices to help us achieve our daily work.
One major vendor of software has recently published a guide to which tool they think you should use to do what in their portfolio as there are so many options and combinations.
Surely this is madness?
So the gap between what you need to do for your line of business or your industry, at all the different levels you need to work at still exists.
More technology, more demands, less productivity and more frustration. Surely we can do better than this?
We can start to reduce the overload and increase the engagement and success of our organizations by reviewing not what our technology does for us, but what core capabilities we actually need to use in order to get our work done.
Its so easy to get confused, side-tracked and blocked by a particular software solution and its abilities. You end up having to compromise on how you get your work done to suit the tool you’re using. It shouldn’t be like this.
Better business outcomes are achieved by focusing on the core capabilities you need to get the job done, and then choosing the best tool to achieve it.
[OPENING]
I start the day like most people do…prioritizing my day.
I have organizational announcements to keep up with,
Sales opportunities that I need to get over the finish line,
Pricing approvals, and of course, many meetings.

Here we’re looking at the IBM Collaborations Solutions & Talent hub,
built on IBM Connections Engagement Center.
A digital workspace with my apps, content, and social tools in one central place.
The content is organized into several sections and is personalized for me.
Check out Executive Corner first.
My latest blog post is getting a lot of interactions

So the first update I would like to talk to you about is ICEC or IBM Connections Engagement Center
This was delivered last year
And it is a tool that helps organizations better communicate with their employees
And helps present and intranet like environment to push important info out
While leveraging the content in Connections
Personalized for user
It can aggregate content from different communities on one central home page
You have control to easily customize the layout
And content is personalized and targeted to the person or audience (role, location, biz unit etc.)
And it is easy to use, anyone can author content and quickly and easily get their content published and promoted.
The second update I would like to talk about is the new Connections Communities
Available with version 6
We know Communities is a core building block of Connections. Many customers share that they have thousands of communities And that this is the tool their employees really use, and love to use, It is how they bring people together as teams.
So we have enhanced it to
offer better layout,
more customizability
look much better
and offer greater engagement
But we are going to take this even further, with Tailored Experience
We know one type of community doesn’t fit all aspects of how you would like to work
Sometimes small team project, with fixed end date
Sometime larger team, or whole department, with content you want forever
Etc.
They have different requirements. So that leads us to tailored experience
With tailored experience Communities will no longer be one size fits all
You will be able to choose from templates for different types of communication and goals in mind
Also an opportunity for BPs to create and share additional industry templates, and augment the app catalog
Next is Connections Customizer
In short it helps you customize the overall look and feel of Connections
So it can better represent your corporate feel
And this is available in the cloud as well, not just on premise
And for many this has been a big enabler to be able to move to the cloud
As in any multi-tenant experience there is of course limits to customization, so as to not disturb other tenants, etc.
SO before for example for one customer, they wanted to move to the cloud but could not
Because they needed to limits users ability to make external communities
Before that was an obstacle, but now you can customize this, and they have been able to migrate to the cloud now
Talk about how customers were not able to move to cloud because they could not customize Connections to meet their needs. One customer was blocked because they had to restrict who can create external Communities. With Customizer they were able to add this capability and they have moved to cloud since
Next is Orient Me
This addresses the need to be able to focus on what matters to me, and remove the noise
Not only will this help you save time, but will also help you missing updates that may be important to you
With Orient Me you can:
Pin people and communities that are important to you in the important to me bar
Updates happen based on analytics in the background, to surface what is important to you (Based on behavior, interactions, etc.)
And ultimately helps you be much more in the know of what is happening
Available in the cloud or as optional install with Connections 6
Next is Connections People
You may say it looks like profiles, and yes it does
This will be a new stand alone mobile app, that will help with expertise location.
We had many customers saying they wanted just quick access to expertise location on the mobile device. Don’t need everything else, just a fast way to get this done when needed.
Well now it is coming
We will also be adding a private note capability, so you can make notes about a person, that you can easily always go back to.
So you can remember that interaction you had with them, a quality you liked or didn’t like, etc that may help you in the future
And don’t worry it is private, so the person will never see it.
Formerly called Live Grid, the next component to talk about is Connections Grid
Low code way for you to rapidly create apps to solve specific LOB needs
Examples could include:
To-Do List
sales tracker
form-based i.e. Sign Ups or Incident reports
Dashboards
Next up, Connections Collaborative Notes
Helps you improve notes with rich text
You can co-edit these notes
And as an added differentiator, often times you have an idea and take a note, but not sure where it should ultimately end up (a blog, forum, wiki, etc.)
Now you can use this as the starting point, and it is a repository for all apps, rather than separate, so you can ultimately put it anywhere once you decide
AND watson can help you choose the best place based on other similar content.
Here are a few others, but in the interest of time I will just focus on GDPR
IBM is taking GDPR very seriously, and we are working hard to ensure our products are all GDPR ready.
For example – in Connections Cloud we are the operator – and we are adding a new role called IBM Connections Auditor which will help with right to be forgotten or annonomized.
You will be able to search by name, and even control restricted content that the admin cannot see because it is in a restricted community.
In Connections On Prem – you are the operator, and we are giving documentation on how exactly to fulfill these requests.
For more info, reach out to your rep, and they can share a full deck on our GDPR readiness plan, including our plan for each collaboration Solution product,
On prem and in cloud
And regular user, guest user, preview user, etc.
