4. {WELCOME}
Evie Hantzopoulos
Executive Director
Richard Roberts
Chair, Board of Directors
Dear Friends,
Twenty-five years ago, Global Kids Founder Carole Artigiani fell in love.
It was unexpected, consuming, challenging, but without a doubt, the right relationship to pursue. One that would
transform not only her life, but more importantly, the lives of thousands of youth from underserved communities in
New York City and later, Washington, DC.
Twenty-five years ago, Carole met with a few young people to discuss a book on foreign policy that she was charged
with promoting. She soon discovered that the ideas, opinions, and passion that the youth possessed were so
compelling, that she wanted to meet with them regularly and provide more opportunities for them to tackle critical
issues and develop their leadership.
Twenty-five years ago, Carole unintentionally fell in love and started something that would become Global Kids.
Along the way, Carole met Ken Miller. His strategic thinking, connections, resources, ideas and yes, love, helped
grow and sustain the organization. Ken’s commitment to social justice, his deep involvement in the civil rights
movement, and his respect for the contributions of young people guided his work as a long-serving member of our
Board of Directors, including his tenure as Chair of the Global Kids Board of Directors.
Tonight, we honor Chair Emeritus Ken Miller for championing the work of Global Kids and showing us all what an
exemplary human being looks like. We also pay tribute to Carole and her vision, talent and tenacity, and for always
believing in the capabilities and potential of our youth.
With support from people like you, a small project blossomed into a well-respected, trailblazing organization
serving 2,400 youth each week, employing 51 highly qualified staff who help develop dynamic, active global citizens
and community leaders. Our alumni are quite accomplished, and you will understand the impact of Global Kids
when you read their stories in the book you will receive tonight – 25 Years of Turning Hope Into Action – and meet
them at this event.
Many of you have stuck with Global Kids for years, providing unwavering support and friendship. Others are new
friends to the organization. We welcome you all as members of the Global Kids family and are so pleased you are
able to celebrate this important milestone with us. As our young people often chant: GK, All Day!
Here’s to the next 25 years. Thank you for believing in Global Kids.
Sincerely,
Richard Roberts
Chair, Board of Directors

that develops youth leaders for the global stage through dynamic global education and leadership

facing their communities and our world.
{MISSION}
{WHY GLOBAL KIDS}
The lack of understanding of
global affairs seriously impedes
the democratic process in the
U.S. and throughout the world.
There is growing recognition among
researchers and providers that the
most successful afterschool programs
combine high-level content with
opportunities for research, community
service, and civic engagement.
New York City and Washington, DC
public school students possess assets
like foreign language skills and
international experience that are in
demand in the business, government,
and nonprofit communities.
Schools frequently fail to engage
students in the learning
process, develop sophisticated skills,
and integrate civic education,
international relations, and key
policy issues into the curriculum.
Global Kids offers a range of year-round programs in schools, online, and at our headquarters. We work
primarily with middle school and high school youth, and also provide professional development and capacity
building services for educators and institutions, and special trainings for youth. GK programs are led by a
team of highly trained professionals with backgrounds in education, international relations, creative arts,
social work and digital media. Our staff engages students in myriad activities, from workshops and field trips
to online projects and meetings with foreign policy experts.

8. Global Kids Core Leadership Program. During the 2013-2014 academic year,
Global Kids is serving 23 New York City and Washington, DC public schools,
providing activities that increase attendance rates, promote safe and caring school
environments, and integrate global issues into academic, extracurricular, and
after-school programs. Through interactive workshops, field trips, and hands-on
service learning projects, Global Kids students are encouraged to explore critical
world issues and educate their peers about foreign affairs.
Youth Conference. Youth in Global Kids Core Leadership Program annually
organize a full-day conference on an international issue of importance. The
students are responsible for selecting the conference theme and leading
workshops throughout the day for an audience of over 600 students and teachers.
This year’s Youth Conference will take place on April 4th and will focus on the
theme of Youth Activism.
The Human Rights Activist Project (HRAP). GK’s HRAP program addresses the
absence of youth voices in the public policy decision-making process by training
youth to become human rights activists. Students identify and research human
rights issues and develop a campaign for social change. This year, all of GK’s
HRAP campaigns are focusing on climate change and environmental
sustainability.
Undesirable Elements. Conducted in collaboration with Ping Chong & Company,
Undesirable Elements is a dynamic, year-long theater project. Using dance,
music, spoken word, and theater, students weave together their cultural heritage,
personal stories, world history, and current events to develop compelling stories
that tackle difficult issues such as globalization, discrimination, and poverty.
Partnership with the Council on Foreign Relations. Through a unique
collaboration with the world's leading international affairs think tank, Global Kids
conducts an ongoing series of monthly roundtables and an intensive three-week
Summer Institute for thirty high school students at the Council on Foreign
Relations.
College Counseling and Career Readiness. All of Global Kids' programs are
designed to prepare young people for success in the sophisticated workplace of
the 21st Century. In our College Counseling and Career Readiness Program,
students receive intensive college and career exploration activites and ongoing
one-on-one support as they prepare for life after high school.
The Online Leadership Program. Through programming in gaming, animated
video productions, and virtual worlds, GK has established one of the nation's
leading programs that utilizes digital media to promote global awareness and
digital literacy among youth.
Curriculum and Trainings for Educators. Global Kids offers professional
development, capacity building, and consulting services for educators, schools and
organizations on GK's content and methodology. Trainings may be customized to
meet the needs of the client. In addition, GK develops curriculum materials
tailored to the specific needs of schools and organizations on a fee-for-service
basis.

9. Global Kids is the feather in the Council’s cap, the proud
declaration that we are actually doing something special
for our community. It helps to show the Kids the world
that awaits achievement, that awaits them. What
undiluted satisfaction Carole, Ken, and I have for having
concocted this family tie.
-Leslie H. Gelb, President Emeritus
Council on Foreign Relations
The amazing thing about Global Kids is that there is a
firm belief that intolerance is taught. It's not born. Kids
aren't born hating one another, particularly for things
they had nothing to do with. Kids aren't born with a
feeling of entitlement, particularly for things that they
had no responsibility for. It's taught. Every single day,
Global Kids works to raise a generation that not only
values the responsibility of building a more tolerant
society, but one that recognizes how it can thrive
through the collaboration of each of our unique
perspectives and backgrounds.
- Wes Moore, Author and Host of Beyond Belief on
Oprah Winfrey Network
Global Kids truly builds a family with the
young people in its programs. When they
are looking for someone who is going to
believe in those ideas that everyone else
thinks are absolutely crazy, Global Kids is
there for them and they are there for one
another. GK Leaders are the change that we
wish to see in the world. They are not the
leaders of the future, they are the leaders of
today.
- Monique Coleman, Actress and
United Nations Youth Advocate
I am always impressed by my engagement with Global Kids students at the
CFR every summer. They have a confidence and quality in their questions,
and a grasp of global issues that leaves me hopeful and excited for our
shared future and the role they will play in shaping it.
- George Stephanopoulos, ABC News
Global Kids inspires young people to become active in their
communities and to become leaders of their communities. I love
the way they use discussions of foreign policy to ignite students’
passion for civic engagement. I believe that passion and
willingness to work relentlessly for the improvement of one’s
community is one of the critical factors that will ultimately dene
our nation.
- US Senator Harris Wofford
I spoke to Global Kids students at the High School for
Global Citizenship in 2007. I was impressed by the
willingness, curiosity and eagerness of the youngsters
to learn about the world and their place in it. Their
open mindedness to step out of their comfort zones and
challenge their thinking with intelligence and
fearlessness was equally astounding.
- Ishmael Beah, Author of A Long Way Gone: Memoirs
of a Boy Soldier and Radiance of Tomorrow: A Novel
The thing that excites me about Global Kids is
the way they challenge young people to explore
the world beyond their own communities, to
appreciate the diversity that different cultures
bring to our society. Whether it is through
travel or foreign language or food, I think that
exploring other cultures is critical to
understanding what makes each of our own
communities unique and worth celebrating.
- Spike Mendelsohn, Celebrity Chef
We live in a world where the distinction between what's global and what's local has been eroded and that, to
me, is the beginning of some wisdom about the world these young people are going to grow into ... I can't
imagine a time when there has been so many pressing issues ... If a group like this didn't exist, this would be
the time to invent it. The good news is the group already exists.
- Richard Haass - President, Council on Foreign Relations 718
