• The UK’s largest university, teaching 35% of all part-time
undergraduate students in the UK each year
• Over 296,000 students registered with us last year, 36% online
• We offer 156 postgraduate and 397 undergraduate courses,
and we have 15 curriculum partnerships established in 23

The UK ’s largest University, teaching 35% of all part-time undergraduate students in the UK each year. Over 264,000 students registered with us. The OU currently makes over 44,000 academic awards annually. Since it began in 1969, the OU has taught more than 1.7 million students. We offer 397 undergraduate modules, 54 CPD courses and 156 post-grad courses and 40 overseas versions.
TESSA (Teacher Education in Sub Saharan Africa) A bank of African authored educational resources supporting classroom based teacher learning Working in partnership with Teacher Education Institutions to improve pre and in service training for teachers across sub Saharan Africa Since 2005, 400, 000+ student teachers engaging with materials –trained through partner institutions HEAT (Health Education and Training) project modelled on TESSA initiative an accelerated, scalable and sustainable training programme for frontline healthcare workers 1,000 students currently on pilot working in rural areas Longer term: 250,000 health workers by 2016 The future: currently in discussion with 9 sub Saharan countries Global potential – interest received from India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and South America The Open University English in Action (EiA) programme – points to make in Bangladesh/India Teacher Professional Development – need to be clear about evidence that underpins our actions. Scale/investment/evidence of impact Developed approaches need to fit with the context of local schools – curriculum, school-infrastructure and materials, language skills and uses Consider the role of high quality materials and use of appropriate technologies ie teachers ’ mobile phones, to support teachers in introducing change For students to take responsibility for their learning we must create opportunities for teachers to do the same, through their professional development
