- Animal abuse takes many forms, including physical abuse, neglect, puppy mills, and dogfighting, and the line between love and abuse can be easily crossed, but there are many organizations that are working to build awareness.\n
- I have a passion of helping animals and making sure that they know they are loved. I have the will to help abused animals to help them to trust humans again and know that there is people who care about them. I love to spend time with animals, they are entertaining and some are so loving and playful. I don’t like seeing any animal hurt. My main reason for this topic is because of my 1 year old dog Tyson. I would hate to see anything happen to her, and its a shame that some dogs don’t get the love and attention that my dog gets. i remember being bit by an american bull dog when I was seven years old. The dog was just scared, not viscous in any way. I just happened to be sitting down, petting the dog when it snapped. As a was sitting there, people cleaning my face up, the owners were apologizing and explaining that they were going to put the dog down. At this point I hadn’t really cried, but hearing this made me cry hysterically because I knew the dog didn’t mean to do it, it was just a reaction. I was then that I realized the love I have for animals was definitely stronger than any wound they could have given me.\n
- Before getting into the main topic of animal abuse, i want to talk about the general types of abuse, which many of you may know. Physical abuse is when somebody uses force/violence to cause bodily harm/impairment to someone continually. The second form of abuse is sexual which is any form on non-consensual physical contact with somebody, especially when performing sexual acts with somebody who lacks the ability to give consent. Psychological abuse is both mental and emotional, this results in threats and/or humiliation to a person. Last but not least neglect, a form of abuse that results in the failure of caregivers to perform an expected responsibility to provide care as needed.\n
- In the mid 1990’s The Wisconsin State Journal did a Q&A with a researcher at the University of Utah. In this Q&A they were trying to get the results from a survey, that these researchers did, connecting animal abuse to domestic violence. In order to find this out they surveyed the largest shelters of battered women in 49 states. The results showed a clear connection between the two in most cases.\n\n-74% owned pets\n-71% of the 74% had partners who threatened or killed their pets\n\nAnother survey, during the year of 1995, was done in a women’s shelter in Wisconsin.\n\n-72% of the women were victims of domestic violence\n-86% owned pets\n-80% of the 86% the pets were abused.\n\n
- Many people don’t realize how many ways animals can really be abused. Animals can be psychologically abused as well as sexually when dealing with inbred animals. However, most of us are familiar with the two obvious ways of abuse, which are, neglect (passive cruelty) and physical (active cruelty). With physical abuse there is hitting, kicking and intentionally harming and animal, however, there is also the dog fighting and puppy mill aspect of animal cruelty, which some people don’t even realize is even considered abuse.\n
- Passive Cruelty is a form of non-physical abuse. This type of abuse causes psychological abuse to an animal, leaving them to have no trust. Some forms of neglects are starvation & dehydration (not feeding or allowing an animal to drink water as a form of punishment), parasite infestation (ticks and fleas crawling in the fur), keeping an animal outside in extreme weather conditions (cold front/snowfall or heat wave in the summer), and lastly when an animal is in need of medical attention and the owner refuses to do so (taking the animal to a vet when they are clearly injured in some way). It is easy To recognize when neglect to an animal is taking place because it is mostly physical. Flea and tick infestations are one way to tell, but along with the infestations patches of hair missing. If a dog is limping, or having a hard time standing up or walking, heavy discharge from eyes or nose, animals kept in cages that are so small that they are not able to move or turn around in them, if they cower or act aggressive when approached, and pets that are constantly left alone without any food or water and are chained in a yard. The penalties for animal cruelty is a maximum of 4 years in jail, Under the Minnesota State Statue, and a $10,000 fine. The less severe cases are charged with a minimum of $500.\n
- Physical abuse any act resulting in a non-accidental physical injury, including not only intentional assault but also the result of unreasonable punishment. Physical abuse is a form of active cruelty, which is where a person deliberately causes harm to an animal, which includes people training their dogs to be aggressive for dog fighting, puppy mills where dog cages are stacked on top of each other and when the dogs go to the bathroom it is falling on top of the dogs below them.\n
- Abuse is physical, emotional, and psychological caused by mistreatment or the misuse of power associated with authority. This is not only the case for animals but people as well. It is a corrupt or controlling act that can either be intentional or unintentional. The International Positive Dog Training Association believes that people who truly do love animals do not want to hurt or frighten them. There are a few techniques that should NOT be used to train an animal, such as, choke chains, pinch collars, shock equipment, alpha rollovers and other forms of physical pushing, punishing and/or domination. In the dominance theory, using force or physical punishment causes potential harm to a dog’s physical, emotional and/or psychological well being, which could harm the trust and respect dogs have in their owners. - Choke Collar: There is only one specific benefit for a choke collar and that is because while they wear this the dog are less like to back out of the collar because the more the dog backs up the more the collar tightens up, which restrains them.\nNon-Flat Slip Collar: This collar is used mainly for safety. When using this collar to walk a dog, the leash must be held in your right hand with the dog walking to the left of you. Also the color much be able to put 2 fingering between the inside of the color and the dogs or cats neck. However, the benefits are that is it does not constrict the dogs, so it is a lower risk of abuse and it is the most comfortable for dogs to wear.\nHead Halters: This is used for safety as well and is mainly used for dogs who are powerful. This helps control the movement of the dog’s head, neck, and nose when walking him/ or her around to go to the bathroom or get some air in a park.\nPinch/Prong Collars: This collar is good if the person using it doesn’t have the strength to pull a dog back when the dog is trying to go after another animal because it takes little strength to handle a dog with this collar on. Also is does have limited constriction around the neck as well as an even distribution on pressure around the neck as well.\nShock Collars: Shock equipment is used mainly for the use of a barrier for a dog, such as, a fence. If somebody doesn’t want to build a fence they will get an electric fence. It is also used to teach a dog to stop barking or stop jumping on people that walk through your home.\nSpray Training Product: These spray products are not harmful to the animal and are said to decrease the likelihood of an animal because abused or abandoned because the scent of the citronella help suppress unwanted behavior.\n
