News21 is a multi-million dollar experiment funded by foundations to train students in innovative multimedia journalism. It began in 2005 with 5 universities and has expanded to include 12 universities led by Arizona State University. Students produce in-depth stories on important issues using multimedia tools. They receive training at ASU's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and produce stories during summer incubators. Examples of their work include food safety investigations involving ASU, Maryland and Nebraska as well as a food safety project in the San Francisco Bay Area by University of California, Berkeley students. The program aims to better prepare students for a global economy through hands-on multimedia reporting experiences.
