Guinea worm disease is close to being eradicated for the second time in history. Currently, the majority of cases are located in Sudan, with 4,410 reported so far this year. The Guinea worm enters through water contaminated with water fleas infected with Guinea worm larvae. There is no cure, but the meter-long worm is slowly removed by winding it around a stick over several weeks or months until it is fully extracted.
