Samsung v. Apple Smartphone LTE Patent Comparative Analysis
- 1. Samsung v. Apple Smartphone LTE Patent Comparative Analysis
TechIPm’s research for comparative analysis of Samsung’s and Apple’s patens directly related to
LTE smartphone implementation in the current US market as of 3Q 2012 shows that Apple holds
LTE patent portfolio comparable to Samsung’s in patent numbers and qualities (which can be
used in counter attack defense).
Samsung holds 84 patents (44 issued patents, 40 published applications). Among 84 patents, 65
patents are identified as patents for LTE baseband modem and 19 patents are identified as
patents for LTE protocol SW.
Apple holds 91 patents (48 issued patents, 43 published applications). Among 91 patents, 77
patents are identified as patents for LTE baseband modem and 14 patents are identified as
patents for LTE protocol SW.
Comparison of patent disclosures with key LTE technologies shows that Samsung’s and Apple’s
is distributed among all the key technology components for an implementation of the LTE
baseband modem. Samsung’s patent portfolio shows a relative competitiveness in coding and
SC-FDMA. Apple’s patent portfolio shows a relative competitiveness in channel estimation,
coding, and MIMO (Ref. Figure 1).
As to the key technology components for an implementation of the LTE radio protocol, Apple’s
patent portfolio shows a relative competitiveness in mobility technology and Samsung’s patent
portfolio shows a relative competitiveness in scheduling technology (Ref. Figure 2).
