Why Set Career Goals?

You should set goals for your career for the same reason that you should be setting goals in your
personal life, for your finances, and for your physical health. Setting career goals will:
.. Give you unparallel focus. Void the distractions and noise in your professional life so that you can laser
in on precisely it is that you want to achieve.
.. Having career goals is a powerful way to stay motivated and remain interested in your job today. By
constantly striving for the next level you will find yourself “achieving” instead of “working” per say.
.. Provides you an accurate assesment of where you are at this very moment.
.. When you set goals correctly (and more on that shortly) you give yourself a powerful roadmap to
achieve your dreams which is not only flexible, but thorough and bound to keep you motivated and
pressured into moving forward.

Why Most People Will Fail With Their Career Goals

The reasons are varied, but more often than not it is as a result of one or a combination of the following
factors:

1. They Never Set a Plan. Having a career goal plan is critical. Having that roadmap is imperative to
the achievement of your career goals.
2. The Career Goal is so Far Over the Horizon That They Never Get Started. When a goal is many
months, or years down the road, it is easy to continually put off starting towards it. After all,
there is always tomorrow, right? Turn s out that tomorrow continues to come, but those
precious career goals do not.
3. The Goals are Unrealistic. This could be due to a number of different reasons—lack of
experience, lack of qualification, lack of time, lack of money, lack, lack, lack. It’s vital to be as
realistic as possible – without getting down on yourself about it – about where you stand at this
very moment, and what it is going to take to get there.


Where To Start With Your Career Goals

Okay, great. So you have a general idea of where you want your career to go. But first, here are a couple
suggestions before we put them to paper:
.. Make sure your career goals are for YOU. In other words, your career goal shouldn’t be too please
someone else, or because you think it looks like fun. It should be something you are passionate about.
After all, it is difficult to stay interested in something when it doesn’t drive us.
.. Seek out a mentor. This is something I would have profited dearly from early in my own career. It
would have saved me a lot of time in trial-and-error. Poke through your contacts, friends and family
members for someone who is currently achieving what your career goal looks like.


Alright, so let’s get started:

1. Career Goals Setting.

Decide precisely what it is you want to achieve, and by when you are going to achieve it. Make
sure there is no mistake about what your ultimate career goal is. Don’t write down something
like, “I want to be well-off.” What’s well-off? It’s a vague figure that is difficult to pinpoint or put
a bulls-eye on. Additionaly, affix a deadline, as it will give you incentive to act. So, let’s say your
goal is to become a criminal defense attorney, jot down something along the lines of:

“I choose to be a practising criminal defense attorney by the age of 28 years.”

The career goal is specific, and it is time-bound. Next!

2. Career Goals Planning.

Now that we have our end-point, and a time-frame in mind, it’s time to sort out the posts of the
journey! What are the main 3-6 roadposts that you will have to pass? Start backwards, as this
can often be easier. Work backwards with the main steps, and then within each add 1-3 smaller
steps as well.

It can be helpful to write out a list of the things you will need to carry out your career goals.
Things like education, specific training, and any other kind of resource you will requre. With
these two lists you should now have a list of short term goals, and medium term career goals.

Be aware that this plan will almost certainly change as you progress through it. Life changes and
so do we with it. Opportunties will come that you didn’t see coming, and challenges you
couldn’t have predicted will arise. The key is to be aware of this from the outset. Embrace the
fluidity of your career goals plan. Be willing to flexible, but don’t break.

3. Career Goals Execution.

By now you should have your career goals written out. Two lists of smaller goals that will take
you step-by-step to the ultimate achieviment of your career goal.

The next, and most important part – is ACTION. Do not wait for next week to get started. Do not
wait for tomorrow, and for goodness sake don’t ever wait for “someday.” Start today. Pick up

the action habit right off the bat and don’t allow yourself the opportunity to talk yourself out of
doing what is ultimately going to benefit you tremendously.
