Open Data
&
Linked Open Data

The dawn of the digital universe
• From 2013 to 2020, the digital universe will grow from
4.4 trillion gigabytes to 44 zettabytes, or 44 trillion
gigabytes. It more than doubles every two years

Open Data & Linked Open Data today (1/2)
• In recent years, publishing and using open data has
seen an increasing spread worldwide
• Access to information, possible thanks to the open data,
has the potential to create significant economic
benefits, improving knowledge, awareness and
democratic participation of citizens and through this
facilitate and promote social change
• The Linked Open Data, in turn, provide an approach to
publishing Web-based data which promotes data
discovery, reuse and governance through the entire
lifecycle of data
http://aliada-project.eu
Open Data & Linked Open Data today (2/2)
However, there remain some challenges and barriers
• cost of publishing resources
• required skills
• speed of publishing new datasets and updating existing
6
datasets
• cost of developing applications that use open data
• complexity of developing applications that use open
data
• reuse of open data
• …

Linked Data: definition
• The term Linked Data refers to a set of ‘best practices’
to publish and link data on the web
• Is used to describe a method to expose, share and link
data trough dereferenceable URI
• Technically Linked Data refers to data published on the
Web in a machine-readable, the meaning of which is
explicitly defined, linked to other external data sets, and
other external datasets may in turn refer
• Linked Data is part of Semantic Web
http://aliada-project.eu
Linked Open Data as RDF statements
• Series of RDF (Resource Description Framework)
8
statements
– Subject / predicate / object
– The statement is based on URI-s
Example
• Decameron was created by Boccaccio
– http://nektar.oszk.hu/data/manifestation/2804140
(Decameron)
– http://purl.org/dc/terms/creator (was created by )
– http://viaf.org/viaf/64002165 (Boccaccio)
http://aliada-project.eu
Linked Open Data advantages
• The linked data is built on the current Internet
9
architecture
• It is machine readable
• The data can be easily connected
• Represents data and not just text
• The RDF is not domain specific. It is a worldwide API
to data
– Galleries, libraries, archives and museums (GLAM) can step
outside of their domain, their data can interact with the data of
other domains
http://aliada-project.eu
Usage of Linked Open Data
• Smart search
• Data enrichment
• Solving problems more easily
• Expressing difficult relationships
• Standards based on linked data

• You have to be aware of the following
15
– RDF representations (XML, Turtle, Json, etc)
– URI, IRI and their character encoding
– URI syntax
– Internet name resolution architecture
– HTTP communication

“ALIADA allows the automatic publication of high quality
metadata created by libraries and museums on the semantic web”

http://aliada-project.eu
“The data published on the Semantic Web (Web 3.0) not only are
in the web, but are part of it and therefore its recovery and use is
more natural and effective ”
http://aliada-project.eu
The Project
• ALIADA: Automatic publication under LInked DAta Paradigm
© 2014 Aliada Consortium 20
of library Data
• Project supported by the European Commision under the 7th
frame program
• 5 partners from 3 different countries ( Spain, Italy, Hungary)
• 2 IT companies :
- SCANBIT
- @CULT
- 2 art museums:
- ARTIUM
- Museum of Fine Arts Budapest
- 1 Research body with high skills in semantic technology:
- TECNALIA
• From November 2013 up to October 2015 (24 months)
Project motivation
• Libraries and museums aim to collect, preserve and
disseminate objects and resources that are part of the
heritage and memory (typically on local culture)
• They create and manage information and high-quality
metadata about those resources and cultural heritage
• They use a privative method of encoding information
and therefore are considered in the web "information
silos“
• As local institutions, have limitations to disseminate this
information by geographic access and language

ALIADA, the application
• It aims to overcome the limitations of the software
management and library collections when encode
metadata standard web format
• Allows automatic publication in the semantic web
of data created by libraries and museums
• Designed to be an "ally" to help libraries and
museums to get content that can interoperate with
others on the web to add value to their collections
and resources
• …

ALIADA, the application
• Oriented to non-expert users in linked data:
librarians, curators, IT staff ..
• Meets the standards used in libraries and museums
(MARC, FRBR, FRAD, LIDO, ...) and the Semantic
Web (RDF, SPARQL, ...)
• Open source
• Multilingual

  • 5. http://aliada-project.eu 5 Open Data & Linked Open Data today (1/2) • In recent years, publishing and using open data has seen an increasing spread worldwide • Access to information, possible thanks to the open data, has the potential to create significant economic benefits, improving knowledge, awareness and democratic participation of citizens and through this facilitate and promote social change • The Linked Open Data, in turn, provide an approach to publishing Web-based data which promotes data discovery, reuse and governance through the entire lifecycle of data
  • 6. http://aliada-project.eu Open Data & Linked Open Data today (2/2) However, there remain some challenges and barriers • cost of publishing resources • required skills • speed of publishing new datasets and updating existing 6 datasets • cost of developing applications that use open data • complexity of developing applications that use open data • reuse of open data • …
  • 7. http://aliada-project.eu 7 Linked Data: definition • The term Linked Data refers to a set of ‘best practices’ to publish and link data on the web • Is used to describe a method to expose, share and link data trough dereferenceable URI • Technically Linked Data refers to data published on the Web in a machine-readable, the meaning of which is explicitly defined, linked to other external data sets, and other external datasets may in turn refer • Linked Data is part of Semantic Web
  • 8. http://aliada-project.eu Linked Open Data as RDF statements • Series of RDF (Resource Description Framework) 8 statements – Subject / predicate / object – The statement is based on URI-s Example • Decameron was created by Boccaccio – http://nektar.oszk.hu/data/manifestation/2804140 (Decameron) – http://purl.org/dc/terms/creator (was created by ) – http://viaf.org/viaf/64002165 (Boccaccio)
  • 9. http://aliada-project.eu Linked Open Data advantages • The linked data is built on the current Internet 9 architecture • It is machine readable • The data can be easily connected • Represents data and not just text • The RDF is not domain specific. It is a worldwide API to data – Galleries, libraries, archives and museums (GLAM) can step outside of their domain, their data can interact with the data of other domains
  • 10. http://aliada-project.eu Usage of Linked Open Data • Smart search • Data enrichment • Solving problems more easily • Expressing difficult relationships • Standards based on linked data 10

  • 21. Project motivation • Libraries and museums aim to collect, preserve and disseminate objects and resources that are part of the heritage and memory (typically on local culture) • They create and manage information and high-quality metadata about those resources and cultural heritage • They use a privative method of encoding information and therefore are considered in the web "information silos“ • As local institutions, have limitations to disseminate this information by geographic access and language © 2014 Aliada Consortium 21 http://aliada-project.eu
  • 22. © 2014 Aliada Consortium 22 http://aliada-project.eu ALIADA, the application • It aims to overcome the limitations of the software management and library collections when encode metadata standard web format • Allows automatic publication in the semantic web of data created by libraries and museums • Designed to be an "ally" to help libraries and museums to get content that can interoperate with others on the web to add value to their collections and resources • …
