Why should we remember them?
• Centenary means 100 years
• Every year on the 11th of November at the 11th hour we remember
those who died in the war.
• This year especially we are remembering those who fought a 100
years ago in World War One
3. WW1
• 1914 to 1918
• Fought mostly by soldiers in trenches
• 10 million military deaths and another 20 million
wounded
• "the war to end all wars"
4. The Breakout of WW1
• The assassination of Austria's archduke Franz
Ferdinand and his wife Sophie, June 28, 1914
•The attack was viewed as a great excuse to attack
Austria-Hungary's troublesome neighbor, Serbia
because it was a Serb nationalist who assassinated
the archduke
•Austria-Hungary officially declared war on Serbia on
July 28, 1914

6. Trenches
•The massive armies met each face to face.
•September 1914- neither side could force the other to
move, so each side began to dig trenches.
•1914 to 1917 soldiers fought from their trenches
•The only way to overtake the other side's trench was for
the soldiers to cross "No Man's Land," the area between
the trenches, on foot.
7. The Treaty of Versailles
•The end of the war was near.
•At the end of 1918, an armistice was finally agreed upon. The
fighting was to end on the 11th hour of 11th day of 11th month
• The Versailles Treaty was the peace treaty that ended World War I
• By the end of the war, an estimated 10 million soldiers were killed.
•World War I is especially remembered for its slaughter for it was one
of the bloodiest wars in history.
8. The Poppy
•The poppy is a symbol of Remembrance Day
•They bought hope, colour, life and reassurance to those still
fighting
•Paul Cummins has made 888,246 poppies which have been
planted around the Tower
• Each poppy represents one man from the UK that was killed in
the war.
