-What is a tribe? Any group of people, large or small, who are connected to one another, a leader and an idea.-Godin uses the term “tribes” to lay the framework of several examples of leaders. Some include Nathan Winograd, Joel Spoelsky.-Taught me that everyone is capable of leading a 'tribe', which is any kind of community of like-minded people.-Learned that by gaining trust and leading the community the right way is one of the most successful business ideas of this time.-I learned that “tribes” used to be a lot more restricted because of the lack of ability to reach large amounts of people, but Godin shows us that the world wide web has changed all that and starting a tribe is not only easier but a lot more likely to be successful today with the use of social media technology.-Tribes taught me that the new way of successful marketing and selling is through honesty and innovation. -A leader should never try to manage their followers, but lead them where they want to go. The leader should always be honest and not afraid to be different.
-The book is laid out and divided in a way, but I wouldn’tall them chapters.Godin jumps around a lot and the book to me was a little confusing to follow in the beginning, but easy to catch on.-I found this book to be extremely inspirational. I felt that it was going to be more of a “how to” manual but instead it led me to new ideas about my style of leadership and inspired me to do things in a totally different way than I had before.-I found it surprising that while a large tribe indeed can be very inspirational and has the power to reach many audiences, a tribe that is more tight knit and passionate about their movement will be able to enlist more individuals to become a part of their tribe.One of my favorite parts of the book is when Godin talks about the belief that followers have in their leaders. He says “"People don't believe what you tell them They rarely believe what you show them They often believe what their friends tell them They always believe what they tell themselves. What leaders do: they give people stories they can tell themselves. Stories about the future and about change.“I had always thought that for the most part, followers would usually believe everything their leader tells them. But after reading this, it made sense that leaders don’t tell their followers WHAT to believe, they give followers the chance to believe in themselves.
-After reading tribes, I definitely want to learn more about becoming an inspirational leader instead of a leader who tries to tell their followers what they have to do. -To be honest, the part of the book that really moved me the most was what tribes is all about. Taking the chance of starting your own movement and not being afraid to STOP following and START leading.- I want to learn more about the leaders that Godin talks about who may not be as famous as MLK or Gandhi, but learn about these types of everyday people like myself who took the chance on an idea or thought and made something extraordinary out of it.
I recommend this book to anyone and everyone who has never taken a chance and stepped up to be a leader. Godin really opens your eyes to so many tactics and ways that you can start a movement from the ground up.I liked this book and think other students in Nixon’s PR classes will like it as well because it is set up somewhat like a blog with snippets of information here and there. I think college students will appreciate it because it feels less like reading a boring book with chapters and more like reading an online blog.
