Michigan image: http://www.clker.com/clipart-white-michigan-on-teal.html Shutta Crum image: http://blog.shutta.com/about-me/interviews/Amanda’s notes: Shutta moved to Michigan when she was a child. It was in Michigan that she went to school and learned to read. As an adult, Shutta has taught both high school English and creative writing at the community college level. Shutta was also a librarian for over 24 years! She was a youth librarian and a storyteller who traveled around the state reading stories to children at hospitals and in schools. In 2002, Shutta’s hard work as a librarian was recognized when she was awarded the Michigan Library Association’s Award of Merit as youth librarian of the year.Although she was not born in Michigan, Shutta has made many contributions to this state through teaching, storytelling, and writing.

  8. Image:http://blog.shutta.com/books-2/bravest-of-the-brave/Bravest of the Brave is about a skunk who is alone in the dark woods. Eventually, the little skunk becomes a hero and stands up to his fears.Amanda’s notes: As a librarian, Shutta often sang songs during story time. One of these songs inspired Shutta to write Bravest of the Brave. She decided a skunk would be the hero of the book and then began doing a lot of research into the physical defense mechanisms of skunks, which include a lot more than spraying. Understanding the ways skunks defend themselves, Shutta was able to make her hero’s actions more intense.Shutta really enjoyed writing this book because she got to use so many adverbs, which is something writers try to avoid, but in Bravest of the Brave, Shutta claims adverbs are very important. She also loves Tim Bowers’ illustrations. She thinks he made the skunk look very spunky and loves the details hidden in the forest.
