Methodology
A bespoke online survey was conducted to explore employment in the
hospitality industry and attitudes towards ‘local’ hospitality
establishments for the Support Your Local Campaign
A nationally representative sample of 1,000 adults aged 18+ was
achieved; with quotas set on gender, age, region and social class. Due
to the high proliferation of the internet among the Irish population, the
survey was completed fully online.
Fieldwork took place from the 26th of April – 2nd of May 2017.

Key Findings – three core themes
© Strictly Private & Confidential
Just over a quarter of respondents (27%) had ever worked in hospitality; the majority of whom
no longer work within the sector (22%).
• Within those who have worked in hospitality, there is substantial diversity in location, type
and length of employment.
• However, the majority identified having learned numerous skills while working within the
sector.
It is evident that Irish adults have positive associations with their local pub which is seen as a
place for socialising as well as meeting friends and celebrating family occasions.
• These positive associations may encourage Irish adults to then visit Irish pubs abroad.
Meeting friends was identified by over two-thirds (69%) of people as one of the main reasons
why they frequent the pub, a much higher proportion than drinking (54%).
• While one third of Irish adults meet friends most often at the pub.
• However, the pub is more likely to be the primary location to meet friends for men (46%)
than women (20%).
This implies that the pub is seen as a social hub above and beyond a location to drink. It is a
friendly place to celebrate occasions, participate in the community and meet friends close to
home.

It is evident that Irish adults have positive associations with their local pub which is seen as a place for socialising as well as meeting friends and celebrating family occasions. • These positive associations may encourage Irish adults to then visit Irish pubs abroad. Meeting friends was identified by over two-thirds (69%) of people as one of the main reasons why they frequent the pub, a much higher proportion than drinking (54%). • While one third of Irish adults meet friends most often at the pub. • However, the pub is more likely to be the primary location to meet friends for men (46%) than women (20%). This implies that the pub is seen as a social hub above and beyond a location to drink. It is a friendly place to celebrate occasions, participate in the community and meet friends close to home.
