The document provides results from a survey of 1,000 Irish adults about employment in the hospitality industry and attitudes towards local hospitality establishments. Some key findings:
- One quarter of respondents have worked in hospitality, most commonly in restaurants or hotels. Younger age groups and those from lower social classes were more likely to have worked in hospitality.
- When socializing, one third of people most often meet friends at the pub. Nearly two thirds celebrate family occasions at local pubs, restaurants or hotels.

Methodology
A bespoke online survey was conducted to explore employment in the
hospitality industry and attitudes towards ‘local’ hospitality
establishments for the Support Your Local Campaign
A nationally representative sample of 1,000 adults aged 18+ was
achieved; with quotas set on gender, age, region and social class. Due
to the high proliferation of the internet among the Irish population, the
survey was completed fully online.
Fieldwork took place from the 26th of April – 2nd of May 2017.

Overall, full time employment was the most common reason to take a job in hospitality. However, the vast majority (87%) of 18-24
year olds took a job in hospitality for pocket money or to help in college.

Men were far more likely to work/have worked in hospitality full time than women (62% v 46%), while those who worked in
hospitality for 5 or more years were also much more likely to have been in full time employment.
