The blue whale population was decimated by whaling in the early 1900s. Krill populations increased due to fewer whales consuming them, benefiting smaller fish, penguins and seals that feed on krill. However, larger fish that feed on the smaller fish were negatively impacted as fewer smaller fish were available as a food source due to increased competition from penguins and seals.
