The Law Of Attraction Mr. Travota
In a quote you stated: "My best quality? The transparency in my eyes, I only have to think a thought
and it's seen". I admire this quality that you possess. This quote could relate to law of attraction
because in the film and book it states how what you imagine, you can materialize. It seems like you
have mastered the law of attraction Mr. Travolta which is why I am writing this letter to you.
Subsequently I would like to pose the question, have you ever gone against your family and friends'
expectations? You see Mr. Travolta; I am at a standstill on what I am supposed to do and what I truly
want to do. My family and friends see me as a teacher, since I just graduated from Ramapo College
of New Jersey with my Bachelor of Arts degree

A Short Story : The Story Of Bigger Mary's Summary
Bigger Thomas wakes up the next morning, after killing Mary Dalton, in his home. He is struck with
fear and believes that he should go back to the Dalton's home to see if Mary's body has burned in the
furnace. After breakfast, Bigger heads to the Dalton's where he sees Peggy about to tend to the
furnace. Bigger stops her and offers to do it himself (out of fear of Peggy discovering the body).
Peggy is concerned about the car being left outside, so Bigger lies saying that Mary told him to
leave it there. Peggy explains that Jan is a "bad kid" and that Mary is blind to it. Mary is not upstairs
so Bigger takes the trunk to the depot anyway. Everyone is beginning to grow concerned with
Mary's disappearance. They start noticing little signs that seem off. Such as Mary not leaving a note.
Bigger decides to visit Bessie, but only to take his mind off of things. Bessie is concerned for Bigger
and believes that he might have developed feelings for Mary. Bigger reveals his large roll of cash.
Bessie is not as impressed by the money, instead she is frightened by the large sum and she demands
to know what Bigger did to get the money. He comes up with a story, and states that he wants to
write a letter asking for money. Bessie is still worried that bigger isn't being honest. Bessie's concern
is that Mary will return home. Bigger assures her that Mary won't show up, and this makes Bessie
scared and suspicious. Bigger threatens to leave her, manipulating Bessie into helping him. Bigger

Title
There are a few symbols that serve a purpose throughout the novel. The novel is opened with Bigger
attempting to kill a rat that has entered his family's apartment. First, the rat allows the audience to
see the conditions the Thomas family lives in, which is crowded. Secondly, the rat symbolizes
Bigger's fear and anger towards his life. He tries to kill and get rid of the rat, just as he tries to
suppress his fears. Thirdly, Bigger, much like the rat is concerned and powerless. Bigger is
powerless and forced to take the job at the Dalton home. He is angry that he did not have any other
alternative but the job as a chauffeur. Bigger has now taken the responsibility of providing for his
family, a responsibility he did not want to partake in (Demiturk 1). Finally, the rat symbolizes the
first death in the novel, and essentially prepares the audience for the later killings (Tremaine 5).
Another symbol is Bigger as a Christ figure. Subsequently, Bigger is "crucified" by the white society
while reaching a sense of liberation (Butler, "tone" 4). Bigger feels relieved and experiences a
feeling he had never felt before. He felt as if he has found a purpose. Finally, one of the major
symbols is blindness. The Daltons are "blind" to their own motives, and only driven by guilt (Butler,
"tone" 5). Mr. Dalton is blind in regards to the financial and social frameworks in which he takes an
interest. He has acquired his wealth not by exhibiting great character, but rather abusing

Johnny Got His Gun Analysis
Leaving the Harbor Every individual comes to a point in their life in which they begin to swim away
from the harbor their parents raised them in, and begin navigating their own life. Dalton Trumbo
uniquely portrays the familiar concept of coming–of–age, within a passage from his novel Johnny
Got His Gun, in which he depicts a son wanting to take a friend fishing instead of his father who has
taken him annually during their camping trip. Trumbo gives insight into the internal turmoil that
strikes when confronting ones parents about wanting to drift away from the anchor they've been for
them. He clearly articulates his point, illustrating the flow in thought from tense to reflective using
precise selection of detail, applying a shift in point of view, and naturalistic imagery. Trumbo shifts
the tone from tense to reflective through effectively selecting details which portray the impact of the
encounter between the father and son. Opening the passage Trumbo asserts the significance of the
tradition by carefully depicting the campsite, in a way which he conveys an atmosphere of nostalgia.
Describing how his memories included the "pine needles...falling" on their tent, sitting "staring into
the fire," fishing, and hearing the "streams which connected the lakes" throughout the night.
Reveling an appreciation of company is present in the boy's childhood which lays the foundation for
his anxiety to inform his father of his wants, as the two were once connected like the streams and

How the Red Scare Created a Hollywood Blacklist Essay
In the 1930s and 1940s many Hollywood writers, actors, producers, and directors were suspected for
communist affiliations. During this time, communism was a popular political movement in the
United States, especially among young liberals. There was a growing fear of communism invading
American society. By the end of World War Two an event known as the Red Scare resulted in
communism become increasingly feared and hated by many in the United States. The Hollywood
blacklist caused the Hollywood industry a lot of harm in its business and reputation.
The House Committee on Un–American Activities (HUAC) was created in 1938. They were

The most famous group of the blacklisted individuals was known as "the Hollywood Ten." It is
made up of one director, Edward Dmytryk, and nine screenwriters. They all refused to answer any
questions from the House Committee on Un–American Activities, and were jailed by the
government and blacklisted by Hollywood. Some of the questions they refused to answer were: "are
you a member of the Screen Writers Guild? "and, "are you now or have you ever been a member of
the Communist Party? " Their unsuccessful defense was bases on First Amendment claims. Even
though being a member of the American Communist Party was disliked and in some cases feared, it
was never illegal. These men were convicted in 1948 for six months in two cases or one year prison
terms in 1950. Edward Dmytryk was summoned to appear before a House Committee hearing
investigating Un–American Activities. He refused to cooperate with Committee and was sent to jail.
After spending numerous months behind bars, Dmytryk made the choice to testify again, and give
the names of other members in the American Communist Party, as the HUAC had requested. On
April 25, 1951, Dmytryk appeared before another HUAC hearing and answered all their questions.
He told them about his extremely short past membership in the Communist party. He also named
twenty–six former members of left–wing groups. He gave

Johnny Got His Gun By Dalton Trumbo
Johnny Got His Gun was written by Dalton Trumbo in 1938 but was not published until late 1939.
Johnny Got His Gun won The Most Original Book of 1939 which is a National book award. This
book was set during World War I. The book itself is fiction but was based off a Canadian man who
lost all of his limbs and senses to a bomb blast. Trumbo first heard about the Canadian man when he
read an article over the Prince of Wales arranging a visit to meet the wounded soldier at a Canadian
veterans hospital. Trumbo was not only an author of American history but American history himself.
Trumbo was born in Montrose, Colorado on December 9, 1905. He was married to Cleo Beth
Fincher. He also had three children, two daughters and one son which included, Christopher
Trumbo, Mitzi Trumbo, and Nikola Trumbo. Trumbo's work was greatly influenced by social issues

Character Analysis Of Richard Wright's 'Native Son'
Richard Wright composes the short story "How Bigger Was Born" to explain why he wrote the
novel Native Son. He expresses his experiences, thoughts and feelings in the short story, which
further leads to the creation of the novel. Wrights expressions and ideas correspond to the events
that occurred in the novel and I consider my thoughts compatible with fulfillment. The short story,
"How Bigger Was Born", is the foundation of the character Bigger Thomas and his told life. In
"How Bigger Was Born", Wright tells of a memory he has of something he once read. "Lenin turned
to Gorky and, pointing, said 'Here is their Big Ben.''There is their Westminster Abbey.''There is their
library'" (page 5 paragraph 6). The significance of this memory is to demonstrate that the two men
felt as though there were not living in a world of their own, they felt they were just a part of
someone else's universe. This supports the novel because Bigger has similar feelings to the two men
in Wright's memory. In a discussion between Bigger and Gus, they are talking about life and
wondering what it would be like to not live on their side of the line. Bigger then goes on to state:
"They got things we ain't. They do things and we can't. It's just like living in jail. Half the time I feel
like I'm on the outside of the world peeping in through a knothole in the fence..." (Wright 20). I feel
as though Wright used Bigger to portray his memories, therefore supporting the short story. Bigger

dignity because he could no longer interact with other humans. It was the author's idea of the worst
case scenario that could have occurred to a soldier who was injured. The description of his injuries
gave the reader a picture of what it would be like to have lived with no legs, arms, or a face.
It was a gruesome thought that helped personalize the story by making the reader feel bad for the
main character. At this time many perceived fighting in a war to be noble but for most of the soldiers
it was anything but noble.
Many times television shows, movies, and books had glamorized war, but that was not the truth.
This book showed the harsh reality of war that most people didn't know existed at the time. War is

Obviously this is not a good solution, which is why we must find other ways to solve our disputes.
This book changed my attitude towards war and the men who fight in them.
As evidenced from the past tense verb in the title of the novel, Johnny Got His Gun takes as its
focus the aftermath of war for a soldier, rather than the optimistic, patriotic prewar time frame upon
which other novels–as well as the original song "Johnny Get Your Gun"–focus.
Although the novel remains clear about the fact that Johnny received his injuries from an exploding
shell, Johnny does not ever think back to combat warfare. The novel takes as its opponent not
combat warfare but rather the mentality of warfare and organization of modern warfare by the
moneyed classes. Joe's memories related to the war, such as the Lazarus story, or the story of the
man with a flap over his stomach, do not directly deal with warfare. Instead, these various memories
create a sense of the incomprehensible decay, injury, and pain that result from war. Joe remembers
the stories with a wry tone that gives a sense of the absurdity of each of the situations–such as the
rumor about the man who lost his face only to return home and die at his wife's hands. In this sense,
the use of the war in the text remains true to its use in the title of the novel: the war exists as a
precondition for senseless and grotesque injury and

'Honky' by Dalton Conley Essay
Growing up in the projects in hard enough as it is, but throw in the fact that you are a white kid, and
you have an idea of what Dalton Conley has had to grow up with. Now a successful sociologist,
Dalton Conley explains in his book, the trials and tribulations he had to face in order to survive in
the projects and his battle with race. Conley had more exposure to the idea of race than most
children, growing up one of the only white kids in New York public housing projects populated by
Black and Puerto Rican families. His parents were artists, whose low income and desire to break
societal molds led them to apply for housing in the then fairly new projects. As most children are,
Conley was at first fairly oblivious to race, a fact ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When his sister Alexandra got involved with drugs, she was able to escape unscathed and go on to

These references show that just because a person may not seem to fit in a certain environment, or
are just to poor to do anything about it, doesn't mean they have to settle with this concept.
Triumphing over obstacles such as race and economic position are some of the ideas the author is
able to throw out and try to inspire people. Don't settle with something mediocre, when a person is
capable of so much more. This is a theme that seems to sustain through out the entire book.
It almost seems as though the author is glad to have had to grow up in such diverse conditions.
People may read this book and think, "the guy really had it rough", but if anything he seems to have
benefited from it. Through his experiences, Conley is able to take with him, a small but vital idea of
unity. If he was able to adapt and coexist in a environment not suited for him, it will give a lot of
hope for a lot of people.
Because this book is about race, people seem to forget how amusing this book can really be. One
line that seems to stick out is when one of the children comments to Conley about his mother and a
wedding dress. "Your mom's so white she went to her

Character Analysis Of Bigger Thomas
Of the many characters, the audience gets to know in native son, Bigger Thomas, the main character
is the most complex. Bigger is the way he is because of his insecurities and fears, as well as his
environment and the discrimination he faces.
Bigger Thomas struggles with negotiating the different formulations of his identity which are
thrown into disarray by a segregated, inequitable and frequently hostile society. The instability of
Bigger's identity is shown to be a product of psychological disorientation engendered by the
environment of racial terror which he must cope. (Elder 1)
Bigger has no mental focus because of his supremacist society and the absence of opportunity
towards African Americans. The greater part of his brutal contemplations are generally parts of his
actual character or his "previous lifestyle" that have been gathering because of the scorn he conveys
within himself (Butler "structure" 3). Bigger also displays anxiety throughout the majority of the
novel. The first instance is when bigger cannot go through the robbery he and his gang had planned.
He is filled with fear and immense anxiety. Resulting him in lashing out violently. Showing the
audience he is not as fearless as he depicts himself to be. Bigger has all the qualities of being an
alternate individual when he arrives at the Dalton home. He changes his method of speaking. He
uses "yessuh" and "nawsuh". As if he had created an alternate personality, creating a behavior that is

Native Son Marxism Essay
I am going to be using Marxism to interpret the book, Native Son. When talking about Marxism, it
generally deals with gender, class, and race. In the book, Native Son, there are many examples of
Marxism that have to do with underestimating and unfairness. This was evident especially when
dealing with Chicago in the 1930 's and 1940 's when Africans were treated unfairly and were
demoted.
In Native Son, Bigger, the main character, and his family are being over priced for a rundown, one–
bedroom flat unsuitable to live in because of their race. Mr. Dalton, Bigger 's boss, owns the
company that sold the Thomas 's their flat. The Thomas family along with a lot of other Africans in
Chicago at the time, were forced to live in south side ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the book, Native Son, Bigger believes that all whites are the same: just as rude, just as mean, just
as irresponsible, and just as violent. Bigger did not just come up with these accusations out of
nowhere. White people in his childhood treated him differently and thought of him as a pest. To
Bigger, white people would always think they were above him. After years of being told you are bad
at something, sometime you start to believe it yourself, and after a while it would be hard not to go
crazy being treated like you were an animal. Africans around this time did not really think of
themselves better than what the whites were saying about them. To him, white woman are just
snobby princesses who spend all their money on clothes and things that are not needed. In his mind,
the white men are rude, overpowering, cocky, and violent. He has these stereotypes because that is
how all whites have acted near him.
When it comes to class, the Thomas family is among the lowest. They live in a one–bedroom flat
with two beds they all four share. The Thomas family barely has a few dollars to their name, and
then there is the Dalton family. They have all the money then need. They proceed to give as much as
they can to charities because it makes them feel more humane taking the money of poor, low–class
Africans. They donate ping–pong tables to the south side, but do not even think of reducing the
prices of

Analysis Of Native Son By Richard Wright
In Native Son, Richard Wright shines a light on the harsh reality a young African American male
faces, as a result of the unhealthy stereotypes created by a white–dominated society. Richard Wright
was born in 1908, in Natchez, Mississippi. His mother's chronic illness set the tone emotionally, in
his life and writing. His grandmother practiced evangelism. The prayers daily, up to half a dozen.
Although Wright's food was already limited, his grandmother applied further dietary restrictions.
Not only was he malnourished, he was also beaten throughout his childhood. Wright's grandmother
also did not allow him to participate in any form of entertainment or games. Whether it be a game of
baseball or a board game, he was not allowed to partake in such activities. Wright did not have a
proper education because of his constant moving back and forth from relative to relative. His
schooling was broken. However, he did graduate from ninth grade at the age of sixteen. Violence
and hunger were his childhood memories. Which made him bitter, leading him to join the
communist party later in his lifetime. Wright's majority of significant life events occurred in
Mississippi, Chicago, New York and Paris (Bone 1). In 1927, Wright along with his family moved to
Chicago, where he worked several jobs. During the depression, he was unemployed and placed in
the South Sided Boys Club, by a relief agency, where he created the character, "Bigger Thomas".
Wright joined the communist party in 1932,

The Impacts Of John Dalton And The Atomic Theory
John Dalton and the Atomic Theory John Dalton was an English chemist, meteorologist and
physicist. John Dalton was one of the first scientists to use homemade instruments to make weather
observations. He recorded over 20,000 weather observations over a period of 57 years,(Retrieved
from Infobase Learning). His fascination for the weather and atmosphere pursue him to research the
nature of gases, which in turn lead him to his biggest accomplishment. He built the atomic theory,
after two centuries, this theory still remain valid in the field of modern chemistry. John Dalton is
considered to be the father of modern atomic theory.

He considered that gases must be made up of particles that can somehow occupy spaces between
particles that make up water. Also, that in a mixture of gases the different particles must intermingle
rather than separate into layers depending on their density. Dalton performed experiments to test and
correct his atomic theory. As every scientist John Dalton makes mistakes. He made a mistake in
assuming that the simplest compound of two elements must be binary, formed from atoms of each
element in a 1:1 ratio. This postulate prevented his theory from being accepted for many years.
Many of the atomic weights were incorrect and later corrected. For example, he said oxygen atomic
weight was seven instead of eight. Although he committed little mistakes, Dalton's theory provided
a logical explanation of concepts, and led the way into new fields of experimentation.

dinner with him in public and try to befriend him, but it makes him uncomfortable. Later that night,

and that he was powerless to help them. He knew the moment he allowed himself to feel to its

fear and despair" (Wright 13).
Bigger hates his family because of their poverty and suffering and because he feels there is nothing
he can do to help them. He believes that he cannot afford to let himself feel their shame and misery
too strongly without also feeling the urge to kill himself or someone else. He has cultivated a façade
of outer toughness to protect himself from the unbearable pressure he feels as a result of his family's

that Bigger is still largely unrepentant for his crimes. Bigger tells Max goodbye, and, as the novel

Bigger's Innocence In Native Son
Bigger's innocence– Argumentative Essay
"Native Son" composed by Richard Wright was revolved into an American drama picture in 1986 by
director Jerrold Freeman. This piece caused a lot of controversy on whether the protagonist, Bigger
Thomas, is guilty or innocent in the unfortunate events that have occurred. The purpose of this
argumentative essay is to examine Richard Wright's film adaptation of Native Son and prove his
innocence based on how society deceived and deprived African Americans, his living and social
environment, and his fears. Richards Wright's flick, Native Son takes place in Chicago. Having to
grow up under the climate of harsh racial prejudice in 1930s, Bigger is burdened with a powerful
conviction that he has no control over his life and that he cannot aspire to anything other than
minimum, low–wage labor. His mother pesters him to take a job with a rich white man named Mr.
Dalton, who is also Bigger's landlord. Instead of taking the job, Bigger, chooses to meet up with his
friends to plan the robbery of a white man's store. When his plans for the robbery didn't go as
desired he decided to take the job as a Butler for Mr. Dalton. On his first day of work, Bigger drives
Mary to meet her communist boyfriend, Jan instead of taking her to school. Mary consistently asked
questions relating to Bigger's ethnic background. Mary and Jan force Bigger to take them to a

Got His Gun By Dalton Trumbo And Ron Kovic's Johnny Got...
The typical country does not approve of citizens killing other beings, and yet the typical country
approves of war. War is the term for legalized mass murdering that is organized being that not all
countries can simply live in harmony with one another. Like most horrible things, it causes more
problems than it solves. The effects of this glorified engagement are demonstrated and analyzed
within the novels Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo and Born on the Fourth of July by Ron
Kovic. These two novels are the stories of two soldiers who went into two different wars that caused
them to deal with great change that would alter their lives forever. Even though these novels
accentuate the concept of soldier's overcoming obstacles, they moreso focus on the adversity of
saying goodbye, isolation, and sacrifice that many soldiers must deal with. To begin, both authors
discuss the hardships people must go through in order to become soldiers, especially that of having
to leave behind loved ones. In Dalton Trumbo's Johnny Got His Gun, he expresses and details the
difficulty that many soldiers must go through when he writes about Joe Bonham having to say
goodbye to his family and girlfriend. For example, in chapter three it states, "'Oh Joe Joe I don't
want you to go.' 'You think I want to go?' 'I'm afraid.'" (Trumbo 34). In this quote, it is the day
before Joe Bonham's departure, and his girlfriend, Kareen, is expressing her fear in him leaving.
This shows Bonham's determination to

Brosnan's Role In 4 Bond Films
It was the mid 1990s, with the fall of the Berlin Wall, a brave new culture charged head first out into
the world. There was no denying that the times were in fact changing and even the great 007
couldn't beat the clock. He had to roll with the punches just like everyone else. Unfortunately, then
current James Bond, Pierce Brosnan was rather discontented with the direction his films had brought
the character, relying more on light humor as opposed to the gritty nature of the preceeding films of
that time. Brosnan would go on to star in 4 Bond films between 1995 – 2002. Although he enjoyed
the role, he often wished that the storylines given to his respective films were not so outlandish in
nature. Brosnan was always a supporter of Sean Connery and Roger Moore, & ... Show more

Searching for the man to follow in Dalton's footsteps would prove to be no daunting task, producers
looked no further than the man they had eyed up so many years prior. In the summer of 1994, after

Brosnan was officially announced as the fifth actor to portray James Bond. GoldenEye would go on
to be released the following November and would enjoy monumental success, revitalizing public
interest in the decades long running series.
Be that as it may, by the time of Brosnan's final outing as Bond in Die Another Day (2002) fans had
began to once again find cause for discontent with the direction the films had taken. Brosnan's last

The theory of relativity is the theory of measurement; therefore, Einstein uses numbers in relation
with the fundamental laws of physics. Physics is the mechanics of nature, which can be calculated
through use of numbers. The application of Pythagoras' theory to Einstein's relativity is obviously
not directly related; however, the relevancy of mathematics used with the accordance of nature has
influenced many intellectuals, which in turn directly assisted Einstein's theory. Some of these
intellectuals are Aristotle, Ptolemy, and Newton.
The field of science during the times of the Greeks have greatly influenced the modern world as one
perceives it in the present day. The atomic theory has much responsibility for the relation of Greek
thought and modern beliefs. Democritus was one of the fir4st Greek philosophers to explain the
theory of the atom. He said that it was indivisible. Furthermore, he explained that each element is
made of particles, and that change occurs by the transfer of the atoms. In comparison to the modern
day atomic theory, Democritus had the correct notion as to the significance of the atom–it is
indivisible. From the research done, Democritus' idea of the atom did not directly influence the
contemporary theory of the atom. The Greek

Story Analysis: Honky By Dalton Conley
Minority Autobiography Analysis
(Book Report)
Title: Honky
Author: Dalton Conley
Summary
"Honky" is the true story of Dalton Conley, a white kid, growing up in a minority community. The
story takes place beginning at the end of the 1960's and concluding in the early 1980's and takes us
from the authors early childhood to college. Dalton Conley was white, with a Jewish mother and an
Irish/English father.
Both of Dalton's patents were artists. His mother, Ellen, grew up in northern Pennsylvania, the
daughter of a dentist, and was a graduate of Penn State University. She was active in the civil rights
movement in the early sixties and later spent time in Haiti as a volunteer. She is probably best

Dalton and Jerome drift apart and Dalton becomes good friends with another classmate named
Raphael. He is Latino, lives near the school and his parents have money. Dalton and Raphael
accidentally set fire to Raphael's apartment playing a game with matches. Both kids were found to
blame for the incident and neither was punished severely. Dalton knows this would have been
different if he had been black and the fire had been in one of the tenements near his home.
When Jerome had been shot, Dalton's mother had placed their name on a waiting list for low–
income housing in Roosevelt Long Island and just before Dalton enters high school, the family
moves. Dalton is puzzled as to why they were given the housing instead of one of his neighbors and
finds his parents being artists played a big role.
Dalton had been accepted into a quality, public school known for its academics where he makes
friends with the kids of working class families who commuted great distances, as he once did, to
school. After high school, he leaves his family, moves to San Francisco, and attends Berkley. After
college, he returns to New York, lives in Manhattan just a few miles from where he grew up, and is a
professor at Yale.
Theoretical Application
Dalton's experiences growing up reflect many of the theories we covered during class. Early on he
has little concept of what race is and considers himself part of the neighborhood in which he is
growing up. Everyone around him is either

Atomic Theories During The 1800's
Atomic Theories
1. John Dalton
John Dalton based his theory on Democritus' findings. This was that matter could be divided and
split into several smaller "units", eventually forming a tiny particle that couldn't be divided. This
particle is an atom. Democritus and other Ancient Greeks could not support their theory or findings
due to the lack of technology, equipment and understanding of atoms. Dalton had his own concept
about the understanding of atoms, since he couldn't develop or enhance Democritus' theory. This
was that all atoms of different elements can be "distinguished" from each other by the differences in
the atoms weights. He shared his theory with other scientists and researchers during his lecture at
the Royal Institution in 1803. His theory was based around the following key points:
1) Matter is made up of atoms; atoms are inseparable and can't be destroyed.
2) Atoms of a certain element have the same mass and chemical properties.
3) Compounds are formed by a mixture of two or more types of atom.
4) Chemical reactions cause the rearrangement of atoms.
John Dalton used his theory to change adapt the idea of combining chemicals during the 1800's.
However his ways of finding the weights of atoms was not very accurate. For example, he thought
that Oxygen had an atomic weight of 7 instead of 8. Despite the ... Show more content on

This theory explains that irrespective of how one views an electron, all understanding of its
properties must be down to its "empirical measurement". Bohr's theory stresses that an experiment's
results are deeply affected by the measurement tools/equipment used to carry them out. Bohr's
contributions to quantum mechanics are deeply thanked by the Institute for Theoretical Physics at
Copenhagen University, which he helped found in 1920. It has been renamed the Niels Bohr

Character Analysis Of Bigger Thomas
Bigger Thomas is not an ordinary character that is portrayed in racial–poverty at the time. Were used
to seeing the same story every day from this time period. Only a few heroic people have stood up
but never like as we see here. Bigger Thomas is a representation of all black men of this time: full of
fear. There worried for themselves and for their own families. They try making a living but due to
their color, they are limited to very few things. The accidental murdering of Mary, finally gave
Bigger a purpose in life even though it wasn't a good one. Many times was Bigger given the tension
that he is powerless in this world like when Boris mentioned it to him how it's a daily routine for all
black men to live with stress. Bigger Thomas is a character that can truly be presented as real life
character with his struggles of poverty, racism, and he has to show that he does in fact exist. Native
Son is the story of Bigger Thomas and how he goes from an absolute nobody to the most wanted
man in the city. Right from the start we can see Bigger's poverty level when he and his brother try
catching the rat. That afternoon, Bigger and four of his friends decide to rob an old white man but
they are all afraid to do it since he is white and the punishment would be huge for them if they are
caught during or after act. Bigger picks a fight with Gus for arriving late, just so he can stay out of it

John Dalton 's Atomic Theory
John Dalton
Lived 1766 – 1844.
John Dalton's Atomic Theory laid the foundations of modern chemistry.
John Dalton's Early Life and Education
John Dalton was born on September 6, 1766, in Eaglesfield, England.
His father was a weaver, who owned a house and a small amount of land. Both of his parents were
Quakers.
Although Quakers were Christians, they were seen as dissenters by the established Church of
England. As a result of this, John Dalton's higher educational opportunities were restricted to
dissenting places of education.
John Dalton was an intelligent child, who took an interest in the world around him and tried to learn
as much as he could about everything.
He attended his village school until he was 11, and then began helping as a teacher.
At age 15, he started helping his older brother John to run a Quaker boarding–school in the town of
Kendal, 40 miles from his home. All the while, he continued teaching himself science, mathematics,
Latin, Greek and French. By the time he was 19, he had become the school's principal, continuing in
this role until he was 26 years old.
It seems that the school's students liked Dalton teaching them, one of them recalling:
"The boys (were) all glad to be taught by John Dalton, because he had a gentler disposition; and
besides his mind was so occupied with mathematics, that their faults escaped his notice."

Analysis Of The Book ' Honky ' By Dalton Conley
Throughout this entire semester, I have learned many different aspects of society that I had a basic
understanding of originally. I never would have imagined the amount of knowledge and real life
stories I would gain in this class. I want to start of by saying that I am grateful to have taken this
class and appreciate each and every story that was shared. These stories opened my eyes to a world I
wouldn't have normally seen. For that fact alone, I believe sociology was one of the most insightful
classes in my college career so far. For this paper, I chose to read the memoir "Honky" by Dalton

Dalton soon began to figure out that maybe his family was a little better off than most other families
within their neighborhood. Chapters 4 and 5 explain how Dalton started to see the differences
between the treatment of various races in his school. His mother was given the option to enroll her
son in either the black, Puerto Rican, or Chinese classes. She ultimately chooses to place her son in
the "black" classes, but problems spark when the teacher refuses to physically discipline Dalton in
the same manner as everyone else in the class. After this incident, Conley is moved to the school's
Chinese classes and from there he discovers that being white can also be considered as being
"privileged." Although he believes that his family might be a little better off than others in his
neighborhood, he befriends a kid named Michael who attends the new school Conley is transferred
too. Michael and Conley both go to the same school, but are part of two different social classes.
Conley describes himself as a "honky" who is afraid to ever invite Michael to his house due to
embarrassment, despite constant pressure from his mother. Dalton's worries subsided when Michael
finally came over, even though Michael still held a higher social presence over Dalton. In chapter 8,
Dalton discovers the power of money. The concept of money was a relatively new subject to Dalton

Johnny Got His Gun By Dalton Trumbo Analysis
In the excerpt from "Johnny Got His Gun", Dalton Trumbo establishes the caring relationship that a
father and son have through a story of them camping. Their experience at the camp site and the son's
careful contemplation about fishing with his friend, illustrates the importance of the relationship
they have. Trumbo illustrates a relationship between a father and son that is built on love, strength,
and sacrifice. The point of view in this passage is third person limited, which illustrates the distance
and strain in the relationship between a father and son. The fishing trip is of great importance in the
father and son's relationship, and when the son realizes that Billy Harper was going to the camp site
and he "wanted to go fishing with him", the relationship becomes more complicated. This
realization immediately creates space between the son and his father. However, the space is filled
through the father's ability to sacrifice for his son. The father reacts to his son ... Show more content

father and his son. The tranquil sound is heard by both the father and his son and is enjoyed by the

water connect streams and lakes, which is a metaphor for the connection between the father and his
son. After the boy has told his father that they cannot fish together, they sleep against a "floor of
pine needles", which shows the discomfort that they boy feels in letting his father down. The
selection of detail highlights the strain in their relationship and the guilt the son feels in the situation.

Johnny Got His Gun Analysis
The novel Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo, is a novel that describes the life of Joe, the main
character, and how he seems to manage his disabilities after he had fought in the war. Throughout
the course of the war, Joe had lost all of his senses, despite touch, and every single limb, after he had
gotten hit by a bomb. Once Joe wakes up, he begins falling in and out of consciousness and begins
to experience difficulty finding purpose in life after his incident had occurred. Surely enough
though, Joe had found a purpose for living again and began to try and communicate with his medical
staff, found pleasure in reliving past memories, and became angered when it came to the
government's role in supplying him with comfort and "honor". Along with these ideas of self–
identity and warfare corruption, flashback, characterization, and author's purpose are all literary
devices that work to enforce the ideas of identity and warfare. Dalton Trumbo's Johnny Got His Gun
utilizes flashback, characterization and author's purpose to develop the two central themes that
hardship is found in finding one's self identity and that the true effects of warfare are much worse
than the public perceives it as.
Throughout the novel, Trumbo continues to develop the ongoing idea that self identity is commonly
met with hardship and self–acceptance, many problems in which Joe had to experience as he
continued to gain a greater sense of his disabilities. However, it became especially apparent that

Literary Analysis Of Johnny Got His Gun
Dalton Trumbo, author of Johnny Got His Gun, is known for his unique style of writing. Many
acclaimed authors of books such as Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice have a formal writing style ,
on the other hand, Trumbo's is informal. It consists of short sentences and punctuation techniques.
This writing style is what sets Trumbo apart from others because this writing style is difficult to
execute and it is hard to apply to other works of literature. His book, Johnny Got His Gun has won
the award for "National Award for Most Original Book". This book is about a soldier named Joe
who has become handicapped after a bomb blast and experiences flashbacks which reflect back onto
his past and present time. The authors' style of writing affects the way a reader interprets the story
through the use of literary elements and literary devices. Fine
Three elements that define an author's style of writing include diction (the word choice), syntax
(sentence analysis), and figurative language (language analysis). An example of diction arises from
the main character, Joe, contemplating what they fight for in the war. The quote, "Pay no attention
when they tap you on the shoulder and say come along we've got to fight for liberty or whatever
their word is there's always a word,"( Trumbo, 118) displays Joe's frustration with the war. The word
choices of "pay no attention", "whatever", and "always" can convey the annoyance that Joe is
feeling in an open yet honest way. Based on his works, Trumbo

Analysis Of The Passage By Dalton Trumbo
¨Parents act so strong for us, that we often forget just how fragile they are.¨ As we grow we often
find ourselves not spending as much of our free time with our parents as we had when we could
barely speak a sentence without having bad grammar. This maturing state is something all of us
experience. We become more interactive with sports, friends, relationships, and we forget who gave
us this wonderful life. In the following stories of ¨ The Passage¨, ¨Through the Tunnel¨ , and
¨American History¨ the author utilizes dialogue to indicate the disconnection from their parents in
the journey to adulthood.
In the story "The Passage" By Dalton Trumbo, the author portrays coming of age and the beginning
of a new chapter in life through the dialogue between the protagonist, Joe, and his father. The bond
between Joe and his father is exhibited as very stable and happy. Their bond displays the attachment
every adolescent acquires with their parents; as we learn almost everything basic to life from our
parents. This short story suggests that at one period in time we start to grow out of adolescence into
young adults and begin to detach from our forever known guardians and heroes. We begin to mature
and become more distracted with friends, school, sports, etc.. Joe, in this short story, depicts this
detachment from our parents as we grow for example in paragraph two: "Now he was 15 and Bill
Harper was going to come tomorrow... Tomorrow for the first time in all their trips

Bigger's Self Realization in Native Son
Although today we live in a nation, which has abolished
slavery, the gap between the whites and the blacks during the early stages of
America's development has plainly carried into the present. In Native Son,
author Richard Wright illustrates this racial gap, in addition to demonstrating
how white oppression upon blacks is capable of producing revengeful individuals,
not to mention being an immoral act in itself. Bigger Thomas is one of those
individuals, who discovers his capacity to rebel through acts of murder against
the white society, which has for long oppressed his family, friends, and himself.

Book three of the novel offers an emotional confusion within the mind of
Bigger, which soon leads him to contrive a self–realization. Immediately one
observes that "toward no one in the world did he (Bigger) feel any fear
now"(254). This is a recent change in Bigger's mind set. He knows that he has
pushed himself to the limits, and he is in control of what he says and does. He
tries firmly to "stifle all feeling in him[self]"(262) when talking to his
visitors in the jail, because he feared that they "would make him feel
remorseful"(262). In this manner, he is able to not confuse his thoughts with
any feelings, so he can sort out his ideas. This is the self–isolating process,
which occurs mentally, and this enables Bigger to formulate a justification for
his sins. "Men do not like to feel that they are guilty of wrong, and if you
make them feel guilt, they will try desperately to justify it on any
grounds"(360), which is precisely what Bigger is attempting through mental
detachment. Bigger "didn't know I (he) was really alive in this world
until"(392) he killed Mary Dalton. Bigger realizes that he committed the
murders in order to establish his existence in this world.

Richard Wright 's Native Son
Richard Wright's book, Native Son, is considered one of the pioneers of African–American literature
within mainstream America (Ann Rayson). The book follows Bigger Thomas's journey through
self–realization, while exposing the line of racism and its effects in 1930s Chicago. Yet, for an
African–American narrative, the story lacks one key character, a strong woman. The women Wright
includes in his story are only there as a tool to better shape Bigger's, or another man's, character.
While the lack of any strong, female character could be based on Richard Wright's own life, his
presentation of Mrs. Thomas, Vera, Mrs. Dalton, Peggy, Mary, and Bessie all lack the characteristics
required to fulfill the strong female lead that African–American literature demands. Despite of the
reasoning behind justification or condemnation for Wright's characters, when considering Wright's
life it is clear that a strong female character was missing. Past criticisms of Native Son have
normalized Bigger's extreme violence and commodification towards women, given Bigger's
character. In "How Bigger was Born" Wright even argues that all characters are portrayed
exclusively as seen from Bigger's perspective (Wright, xxxi). Literary critics and feminist challenge
this justification based upon Wright's authority as the author. They argue instead that "If read as the
negative polarity of the text, this process of male reification and appropriation pervades the work."
(France, 414). Every woman in the

implicate different meanings and emotions within a text. Dalton Trumbo uses this technique to
envelope various themes in his stories, like Johnny Got His Gun. In the book Johnny Got his Gun,
Dalton Trumbo utilizes repetition to illustrate the idiocy and brutality of war in order to demonstrate
the true and appalling nature of modern warfare and the draft.
Trumbo implicates epimone, a type of repetition that repeats a phrase that is usually a question, to
express how the principles for going to war is a foolish purpose worth dying for. When Joe is ...

At the beginning of the book Joe starts to truly realize how destroyed he is as a man, "My arms are
gone. Both of my arms are gone Kareen both of them. They're gone. They've cut my arms off both
of my arms. Oh jesus mother god Kareen they've cut off both of them. Oh jesus mother god Kareen
Kareen Kareen my arms" (38). Just by reading this excerpt, the sad cries and absolute desolation of
Joe is apparent through the use of repetition. Trumbo first repeats "my arms are gone" multiple
times before switching clearly to repeating "they" and finally to repeating "Kareen". He does this to
powerfully ingrain and fix a dilemma, before placing the blame and then showing how hopeless this
situation really is. Trumbo's use of repetition was very well organized in the sense that they pressed
these ideas into the reader by repeating them and highlighting the theme. The last use of repetition
serving purposely to show what Joe is emotionally going through by repeating "Kareen",
representing how Joe has become almost like a child, or not in a powerful enough state to do
anything about his issue. Trumbo emphasizes the helplessness of being drafted and forced into
abhorrent situations again, "He too had been taken away from his home. He too had been put into
the service of another without his consent. He too had been sent to a foreign country far from his
native parts. He too had been forced to fight against other slaves of his own kind in a strange place"
(183). Here, the repetition of he, referring to soldiers but more so just the average man, is repeated
here to emphasize how regular people are forced like "slaves" to fight for people who are higher up.
This strongly resembles like the quote above, just like a child and their parents earlier, where Joe
repeatedly cries out for Kareen like a child begging for help. Really, Dalton does this to show the
bigger picture which is how soldiers are

The Law Of Attraction Mr. Travota

  • 1. The Law Of Attraction Mr. Travota In a quote you stated: "My best quality? The transparency in my eyes, I only have to think a thought and it's seen". I admire this quality that you possess. This quote could relate to law of attraction because in the film and book it states how what you imagine, you can materialize. It seems like you have mastered the law of attraction Mr. Travolta which is why I am writing this letter to you. Subsequently I would like to pose the question, have you ever gone against your family and friends' expectations? You see Mr. Travolta; I am at a standstill on what I am supposed to do and what I truly want to do. My family and friends see me as a teacher, since I just graduated from Ramapo College of New Jersey with my Bachelor of Arts degree ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. A Short Story : The Story Of Bigger Mary's Summary Bigger Thomas wakes up the next morning, after killing Mary Dalton, in his home. He is struck with fear and believes that he should go back to the Dalton's home to see if Mary's body has burned in the furnace. After breakfast, Bigger heads to the Dalton's where he sees Peggy about to tend to the furnace. Bigger stops her and offers to do it himself (out of fear of Peggy discovering the body). Peggy is concerned about the car being left outside, so Bigger lies saying that Mary told him to leave it there. Peggy explains that Jan is a "bad kid" and that Mary is blind to it. Mary is not upstairs so Bigger takes the trunk to the depot anyway. Everyone is beginning to grow concerned with Mary's disappearance. They start noticing little signs that seem off. Such as Mary not leaving a note. Bigger decides to visit Bessie, but only to take his mind off of things. Bessie is concerned for Bigger and believes that he might have developed feelings for Mary. Bigger reveals his large roll of cash. Bessie is not as impressed by the money, instead she is frightened by the large sum and she demands to know what Bigger did to get the money. He comes up with a story, and states that he wants to write a letter asking for money. Bessie is still worried that bigger isn't being honest. Bessie's concern is that Mary will return home. Bigger assures her that Mary won't show up, and this makes Bessie scared and suspicious. Bigger threatens to leave her, manipulating Bessie into helping him. Bigger ... • 3. In Cold Blood Quotes And Analysis Title There are a few symbols that serve a purpose throughout the novel. The novel is opened with Bigger attempting to kill a rat that has entered his family's apartment. First, the rat allows the audience to see the conditions the Thomas family lives in, which is crowded. Secondly, the rat symbolizes Bigger's fear and anger towards his life. He tries to kill and get rid of the rat, just as he tries to suppress his fears. Thirdly, Bigger, much like the rat is concerned and powerless. Bigger is powerless and forced to take the job at the Dalton home. He is angry that he did not have any other alternative but the job as a chauffeur. Bigger has now taken the responsibility of providing for his family, a responsibility he did not want to partake in (Demiturk 1). Finally, the rat symbolizes the first death in the novel, and essentially prepares the audience for the later killings (Tremaine 5). Another symbol is Bigger as a Christ figure. Subsequently, Bigger is "crucified" by the white society while reaching a sense of liberation (Butler, "tone" 4). Bigger feels relieved and experiences a feeling he had never felt before. He felt as if he has found a purpose. Finally, one of the major symbols is blindness. The Daltons are "blind" to their own motives, and only driven by guilt (Butler, "tone" 5). Mr. Dalton is blind in regards to the financial and social frameworks in which he takes an interest. He has acquired his wealth not by exhibiting great character, but rather abusing ... • 4. Johnny Got His Gun Analysis Leaving the Harbor Every individual comes to a point in their life in which they begin to swim away from the harbor their parents raised them in, and begin navigating their own life. Dalton Trumbo uniquely portrays the familiar concept of coming–of–age, within a passage from his novel Johnny Got His Gun, in which he depicts a son wanting to take a friend fishing instead of his father who has taken him annually during their camping trip. Trumbo gives insight into the internal turmoil that strikes when confronting ones parents about wanting to drift away from the anchor they've been for them. He clearly articulates his point, illustrating the flow in thought from tense to reflective using precise selection of detail, applying a shift in point of view, and naturalistic imagery. Trumbo shifts the tone from tense to reflective through effectively selecting details which portray the impact of the encounter between the father and son. Opening the passage Trumbo asserts the significance of the tradition by carefully depicting the campsite, in a way which he conveys an atmosphere of nostalgia. Describing how his memories included the "pine needles...falling" on their tent, sitting "staring into the fire," fishing, and hearing the "streams which connected the lakes" throughout the night. Reveling an appreciation of company is present in the boy's childhood which lays the foundation for his anxiety to inform his father of his wants, as the two were once connected like the streams and ... • 5. How the Red Scare Created a Hollywood Blacklist Essay In the 1930s and 1940s many Hollywood writers, actors, producers, and directors were suspected for communist affiliations. During this time, communism was a popular political movement in the United States, especially among young liberals. There was a growing fear of communism invading American society. By the end of World War Two an event known as the Red Scare resulted in communism become increasingly feared and hated by many in the United States. The Hollywood blacklist caused the Hollywood industry a lot of harm in its business and reputation. The House Committee on Un–American Activities (HUAC) was created in 1938. They were focused on investigating and putting an end to Communists and Communist supporters in the American ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They all refused to answer any questions from the House Committee on Un–American Activities, and were jailed by the government and blacklisted by Hollywood. Some of the questions they refused to answer were: "are you a member of the Screen Writers Guild? "and, "are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party? " Their unsuccessful defense was bases on First Amendment claims. Even though being a member of the American Communist Party was disliked and in some cases feared, it was never illegal. These men were convicted in 1948 for six months in two cases or one year prison terms in 1950. Edward Dmytryk was summoned to appear before a House Committee hearing investigating Un–American Activities. He refused to cooperate with Committee and was sent to jail. After spending numerous months behind bars, Dmytryk made the choice to testify again, and give the names of other members in the American Communist Party, as the HUAC had requested. On April 25, 1951, Dmytryk appeared before another HUAC hearing and answered all their questions. He told them about his extremely short past membership in the Communist party. • 6. Johnny Got His Gun By Dalton Trumbo Johnny Got His Gun was written by Dalton Trumbo in 1938 but was not published until late 1939. Johnny Got His Gun won The Most Original Book of 1939 which is a National book award. This book was set during World War I. The book itself is fiction but was based off a Canadian man who lost all of his limbs and senses to a bomb blast. Trumbo first heard about the Canadian man when he read an article over the Prince of Wales arranging a visit to meet the wounded soldier at a Canadian veterans hospital. Trumbo was not only an author of American history but American history himself. Trumbo was born in Montrose, Colorado on December 9, 1905. He was married to Cleo Beth Fincher. He also had three children, two daughters and one son which included, Christopher Trumbo, Mitzi Trumbo, and Nikola Trumbo. Trumbo's work was greatly influenced by social issues going on in the world. He was a successful author and screenwriter resulting in him being one of the highest paid film writers in the business. Some of his other books and movies include Spartacus, A Man to Remember, Lonely are the Brave, Kitty Foyle, and many others. Trumbo was blacklisted during the McCarthy era and became the most famous member of "The Hollywood Ten". Unlike many celebrities blacklisted during the McCarthy era Dalton Trumbo was in fact a communist. Trumbo was brought before the House Un–American Activities Committee in 1947 and refused to answer their questions which resulted in him being jailed. For thirteen ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Character Analysis Of Richard Wright's 'Native Son' Richard Wright composes the short story "How Bigger Was Born" to explain why he wrote the novel Native Son. He expresses his experiences, thoughts and feelings in the short story, which further leads to the creation of the novel. Wrights expressions and ideas correspond to the events that occurred in the novel and I consider my thoughts compatible with fulfillment. The short story, "How Bigger Was Born", is the foundation of the character Bigger Thomas and his told life. In "How Bigger Was Born", Wright tells of a memory he has of something he once read. "Lenin turned to Gorky and, pointing, said 'Here is their Big Ben.''There is their Westminster Abbey.''There is their library'" (page 5 paragraph 6). The significance of this memory is to demonstrate that the two men felt as though there were not living in a world of their own, they felt they were just a part of someone else's universe. This supports the novel because Bigger has similar feelings to the two men in Wright's memory. In a discussion between Bigger and Gus, they are talking about life and wondering what it would be like to not live on their side of the line. Bigger then goes on to state: "They got things we ain't. They do things and we can't. It's just like living in jail. Half the time I feel like I'm on the outside of the world peeping in through a knothole in the fence..." (Wright 20). I feel as though Wright used Bigger to portray his memories, therefore supporting the short story. Bigger went on to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Johnny Got His Gun Essay dignity because he could no longer interact with other humans. It was the author's idea of the worst case scenario that could have occurred to a soldier who was injured. The description of his injuries gave the reader a picture of what it would be like to have lived with no legs, arms, or a face. It was a gruesome thought that helped personalize the story by making the reader feel bad for the main character. At this time many perceived fighting in a war to be noble but for most of the soldiers it was anything but noble. Many times television shows, movies, and books had glamorized war, but that was not the truth. This book showed the harsh reality of war that most people didn't know existed at the time. War is something that no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Obviously this is not a good solution, which is why we must find other ways to solve our disputes. This book changed my attitude towards war and the men who fight in them. As evidenced from the past tense verb in the title of the novel, Johnny Got His Gun takes as its focus the aftermath of war for a soldier, rather than the optimistic, patriotic prewar time frame upon which other novels–as well as the original song "Johnny Get Your Gun"–focus. Although the novel remains clear about the fact that Johnny received his injuries from an exploding shell, Johnny does not ever think back to combat warfare. The novel takes as its opponent not combat warfare but rather the mentality of warfare and organization of modern warfare by the moneyed classes. Joe's memories related to the war, such as the Lazarus story, or the story of the man with a flap over his stomach, do not directly deal with warfare. Instead, these various memories create a sense of the incomprehensible decay, injury, and pain that result from war. Joe remembers the stories with a wry tone that gives a sense of the absurdity of each of the situations–such as the rumor about the man who lost his face only to return home and die at his wife's hands. In this sense, the use of the war in the text remains true to its use in the title of the novel: the war exists as a precondition for senseless and grotesque injury and ... • 9. 'Honky' by Dalton Conley Essay Growing up in the projects in hard enough as it is, but throw in the fact that you are a white kid, and you have an idea of what Dalton Conley has had to grow up with. Now a successful sociologist, Dalton Conley explains in his book, the trials and tribulations he had to face in order to survive in the projects and his battle with race. Conley had more exposure to the idea of race than most children, growing up one of the only white kids in New York public housing projects populated by Black and Puerto Rican families. His parents were artists, whose low income and desire to break societal molds led them to apply for housing in the then fairly new projects. As most children are, Conley was at first fairly oblivious to race, a fact ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When his sister Alexandra got involved with drugs, she was able to escape unscathed and go on to college, while a non–white friend ended up serving 25 years in prison after a drug raid. These references show that just because a person may not seem to fit in a certain environment, or are just to poor to do anything about it, doesn't mean they have to settle with this concept. Triumphing over obstacles such as race and economic position are some of the ideas the author is able to throw out and try to inspire people. Don't settle with something mediocre, when a person is capable of so much more. This is a theme that seems to sustain through out the entire book. It almost seems as though the author is glad to have had to grow up in such diverse conditions. People may read this book and think, "the guy really had it rough", but if anything he seems to have benefited from it. Through his experiences, Conley is able to take with him, a small but vital idea of unity. If he was able to adapt and coexist in a environment not suited for him, it will give a lot of hope for a lot of people. Because this book is about race, people seem to forget how amusing this book can really be. One line that seems to stick out is when one of the children comments to Conley about his mother and a wedding dress. "Your mom's so white she went to her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Character Analysis Of Bigger Thomas Of the many characters, the audience gets to know in native son, Bigger Thomas, the main character is the most complex. Bigger is the way he is because of his insecurities and fears, as well as his environment and the discrimination he faces. Bigger Thomas struggles with negotiating the different formulations of his identity which are thrown into disarray by a segregated, inequitable and frequently hostile society. The instability of Bigger's identity is shown to be a product of psychological disorientation engendered by the environment of racial terror which he must cope. (Elder 1) Bigger has no mental focus because of his supremacist society and the absence of opportunity towards African Americans. The greater part of his brutal contemplations are generally parts of his actual character or his "previous lifestyle" that have been gathering because of the scorn he conveys within himself (Butler "structure" 3). Bigger also displays anxiety throughout the majority of the novel. The first instance is when bigger cannot go through the robbery he and his gang had planned. He is filled with fear and immense anxiety. Resulting him in lashing out violently. Showing the audience he is not as fearless as he depicts himself to be. • 11. Native Son Marxism Essay I am going to be using Marxism to interpret the book, Native Son. When talking about Marxism, it generally deals with gender, class, and race. In the book, Native Son, there are many examples of Marxism that have to do with underestimating and unfairness. This was evident especially when dealing with Chicago in the 1930 's and 1940 's when Africans were treated unfairly and were demoted. In Native Son, Bigger, the main character, and his family are being over priced for a rundown, one– bedroom flat unsuitable to live in because of their race. Bigger did not just come up with these accusations out of nowhere. White people in his childhood treated him differently and thought of him as a pest. To Bigger, white people would always think they were above him. After years of being told you are bad at something, sometime you start to believe it yourself, and after a while it would be hard not to go crazy being treated like you were an animal. Africans around this time did not really think of themselves better than what the whites were saying about them. To him, white woman are just snobby princesses who spend all their money on clothes and things that are not needed. In his mind, the white men are rude, overpowering, cocky, and violent. He has these stereotypes because that is how all whites have acted near him. When it comes to class, the Thomas family is among the lowest. They live in a one–bedroom flat with two beds they all four share. The Thomas family barely has a few dollars to their name, and then there is the Dalton family. They have all the money then need. Analysis Of Native Son By Richard Wright In Native Son, Richard Wright shines a light on the harsh reality a young African American male faces, as a result of the unhealthy stereotypes created by a white–dominated society. Richard Wright was born in 1908, in Natchez, Mississippi. His mother's chronic illness set the tone emotionally, in his life and writing. His grandmother practiced evangelism. The prayers daily, up to half a dozen. Although Wright's food was already limited, his grandmother applied further dietary restrictions. Not only was he malnourished, he was also beaten throughout his childhood. Wright's grandmother also did not allow him to participate in any form of entertainment or games. Whether it be a game of baseball or a board game, he was not allowed to partake in such activities. Wright did not have a proper education because of his constant moving back and forth from relative to relative. His schooling was broken. However, he did graduate from ninth grade at the age of sixteen. Violence and hunger were his childhood memories. Which made him bitter, leading him to join the communist party later in his lifetime. Wright's majority of significant life events occurred in Mississippi, Chicago, New York and Paris (Bone 1). In 1927, Wright along with his family moved to Chicago, where he worked several jobs. Bigger's Innocence In Native Son Bigger's innocence– Argumentative Essay "Native Son" composed by Richard Wright was revolved into an American drama picture in 1986 by director Jerrold Freeman. This piece caused a lot of controversy on whether the protagonist, Bigger Thomas, is guilty or innocent in the unfortunate events that have occurred. The purpose of this argumentative essay is to examine Richard Wright's film adaptation of Native Son and prove his innocence based on how society deceived and deprived African Americans, his living and social environment, and his fears. Richards Wright's flick, Native Son takes place in Chicago. War is the term for legalized mass murdering that is organized being that not all countries can simply live in harmony with one another. Like most horrible things, it causes more problems than it solves. The effects of this glorified engagement are demonstrated and analyzed within the novels Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo and Born on the Fourth of July by Ron Kovic. These two novels are the stories of two soldiers who went into two different wars that caused them to deal with great change that would alter their lives forever. Even though these novels accentuate the concept of soldier's overcoming obstacles, they moreso focus on the adversity of saying goodbye, isolation, and sacrifice that many soldiers must deal with. To begin, both authors discuss the hardships people must go through in order to become soldiers, especially that of having to leave behind loved ones. In Dalton Trumbo's Johnny Got His Gun, he expresses and details the difficulty that many soldiers must go through when he writes about Joe Bonham having to say goodbye to his family and girlfriend. For example, in chapter three it states, "'Oh Joe Joe I don't want you to go.' 'You think I want to go?' 'I'm afraid.'" (Trumbo 34). • 24. Atomic Theories During The 1800's Atomic Theories 1. John Dalton John Dalton based his theory on Democritus' findings. This was that matter could be divided and split into several smaller "units", eventually forming a tiny particle that couldn't be divided. This particle is an atom. Democritus and other Ancient Greeks could not support their theory or findings due to the lack of technology, equipment and understanding of atoms. Dalton had his own concept about the understanding of atoms, since he couldn't develop or enhance Democritus' theory. This was that all atoms of different elements can be "distinguished" from each other by the differences in the atoms weights. He shared his theory with other scientists and researchers during his lecture at the Royal Institution in 1803. His theory was based around the following key points: 1) Matter is made up of atoms; atoms are inseparable and can't be destroyed. Johnny Got His Gun Analysis The novel Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo, is a novel that describes the life of Joe, the main character, and how he seems to manage his disabilities after he had fought in the war. Throughout the course of the war, Joe had lost all of his senses, despite touch, and every single limb, after he had gotten hit by a bomb. Once Joe wakes up, he begins falling in and out of consciousness and begins to experience difficulty finding purpose in life after his incident had occurred. Surely enough though, Joe had found a purpose for living again and began to try and communicate with his medical staff, found pleasure in reliving past memories, and became angered when it came to the government's role in supplying him with comfort and "honor". Along with these ideas of self– identity and warfare corruption, flashback, characterization, and author's purpose are all literary devices that work to enforce the ideas of identity and warfare. Dalton Trumbo's Johnny Got His Gun utilizes flashback, characterization and author's purpose to develop the two central themes that hardship is found in finding one's self identity and that the true effects of warfare are much worse than the public perceives it as. The authors' style of writing affects the way a reader interprets the story through the use of literary elements and literary devices. Fine Three elements that define an author's style of writing include diction (the word choice), syntax (sentence analysis), and figurative language (language analysis). An example of diction arises from the main character, Joe, contemplating what they fight for in the war. The quote, "Pay no attention when they tap you on the shoulder and say come along we've got to fight for liberty or whatever their word is there's always a word,"( Trumbo, 118) displays Joe's frustration with the war. • 34. Analysis Of The Passage By Dalton Trumbo ¨Parents act so strong for us, that we often forget just how fragile they are.¨ As we grow we often find ourselves not spending as much of our free time with our parents as we had when we could barely speak a sentence without having bad grammar. This maturing state is something all of us experience. We become more interactive with sports, friends, relationships, and we forget who gave us this wonderful life. In the following stories of ¨ The Passage¨, ¨Through the Tunnel¨ , and ¨American History¨ the author utilizes dialogue to indicate the disconnection from their parents in the journey to adulthood. In the story "The Passage" By Dalton Trumbo, the author portrays coming of age and the beginning of a new chapter in life through the dialogue between the protagonist, Joe, and his father. The bond between Joe and his father is exhibited as very stable and happy. Their bond displays the attachment every adolescent acquires with their parents; as we learn almost everything basic to life from our parents. This short story suggests that at one period in time we start to grow out of adolescence into young adults and begin to detach from our forever known guardians and heroes. We begin to mature and become more distracted with friends, school, sports, etc.. Joe, in this short story, depicts this detachment from our parents as we grow for example in paragraph two: "Now he was 15 and Bill Harper was going to come tomorrow... Tomorrow for the first time in all their trips ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This girl was older than he was but he was determined to at least attempt at a date. She agrees to go out to the town, and offers him a ride there which is embarrassing for him, but his pride is in the way and decides to travel by canoe. While they are discussing, she starts talking about fishing and how it is "dumb". Conveniently, shortly after she says this, the rod, which he mindlessly tied to his boat, is drawing attention of the fish. As, painstaking as it is to have a beautiful girl critique what loved, an enormous bass is starting to bite. Her words are muted and he is engulfed by the creature. "While all this was going on, Sheila had begun talking, and it was a few minutes before I was able to catch up with her train of thought." Showing no attention, he is oblivious to what is happening and his priorities are completely out of nature. English chemist's and physicist, was born September 6, 1766 at Eagles field. His father, Joseph Dalton, was a weaver who, with his wife had three children; Jonathan, John and Mary. Ultimately, Dalton's theory for color blindness was wrong, but as he was the first person ever to research it, the condition became known as Daltonism"" (famousscientists.org NP). The Daltons research papers changes, he began to study and observe the physical sciences: heat conduction, gas expansion by heat, the properties of light, the aurora borealis, and meteorology. These studies helped him establish The Atomic Theory. Dalton's atomic theory proposed that all matter was composed of atoms, indivisible and indestructible building blocks. While all atoms of an element were identical, different elements had atoms of differing size and mass.Dalton's atomic theory also stated that all compounds were composed of combinations of these atoms in defined ratios.Dalton also postulated that chemical reactions resulted in the rearrangement of the reacting atoms. • 41. Richard Wright 's Native Son Richard Wright's book, Native Son, is considered one of the pioneers of African–American literature within mainstream America (Ann Rayson). The book follows Bigger Thomas's journey through self–realization, while exposing the line of racism and its effects in 1930s Chicago. Yet, for an African–American narrative, the story lacks one key character, a strong woman. The women Wright includes in his story are only there as a tool to better shape Bigger's, or another man's, character. While the lack of any strong, female character could be based on Richard Wright's own life, his presentation of Mrs. Thomas, Vera, Mrs. Dalton, Peggy, Mary, and Bessie all lack the characteristics required to fulfill the strong female lead that African–American literature demands. Despite of the reasoning behind justification or condemnation for Wright's characters, when considering Wright's life it is clear that a strong female character was missing. Past criticisms of Native Son have normalized Bigger's extreme violence and commodification towards women, given Bigger's character. In "How Bigger was Born" Wright even argues that all characters are portrayed exclusively as seen from Bigger's perspective (Wright, xxxi). Literary critics and feminist challenge this justification based upon Wright's authority as the author. They argue instead that "If read as the negative polarity of the text, this process of male reification and appropriation pervades the work." (France, 414). Every woman in the ... • 42. How Does Trumbo Use Repetition In Johnny Got His Gun Many popular public speakers utilize repetition in their speeches to influence a more powerful statement, however, this also includes literature. Repetition comes in many forms that all change or implicate different meanings and emotions within a text. Dalton Trumbo uses this technique to envelope various themes in his stories, like Johnny Got His Gun. In the book Johnny Got his Gun, Dalton Trumbo utilizes repetition to illustrate the idiocy and brutality of war in order to demonstrate the true and appalling nature of modern warfare and the draft. Trumbo implicates epimone, a type of repetition that repeats a phrase that is usually a question, to express how the principles for going to war is a foolish purpose worth dying for. When Joe is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the beginning of the book Joe starts to truly realize how destroyed he is as a man, "My arms are gone. Both of my arms are gone Kareen both of them. They're gone. They've cut my arms off both of my arms. Oh jesus mother god Kareen they've cut off both of them. Oh jesus mother god Kareen Kareen Kareen my arms" (38). Just by reading this excerpt, the sad cries and absolute desolation of Joe is apparent through the use of repetition. Trumbo first repeats "my arms are gone" multiple times before switching clearly to repeating "they" and finally to repeating "Kareen". He does this to powerfully ingrain and fix a dilemma, before placing the blame and then showing how hopeless this situation really is. Trumbo's use of repetition was very well organized in the sense that they pressed these ideas into the reader by repeating them and highlighting the theme. The last use of repetition serving purposely to show what Joe is emotionally going through by repeating "Kareen", representing how Joe has become almost like a child, or not in a powerful enough state to do anything about his issue. Trumbo emphasizes the helplessness of being drafted and forced into abhorrent situations again, "He too had been taken away from his home. He too had been put into the service of another without his consent. He too had been sent to a foreign country far from his native parts. He too had been forced to fight against other slaves of his own kind in a strange place" (183). Here, the repetition of he, referring to soldiers but more so just the average man, is repeated here to emphasize how regular people are forced like "slaves" to fight for people who are higher up. This strongly resembles like the quote above, just like a child and their parents earlier, where Joe repeatedly cries out for Kareen like a child begging for help. Really, Dalton does this to show the bigger picture which is how soldiers are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
