Line plot: a graph that shows frequency of data along a number line.

Legend: explains the meaning of each symbol on a graph.
Anticipatory set:
Mental math: have students use a blank page in their math journal to solve these
problems. 7x9, 8x4, 6x7, 9x8, 7x6, 8x7, and 7x5.
Procedures:
Pass out post it notes and have the students write down how many members they have in
their family. Including their parents and siblings. Give mine for an example, my mom
two brothers and me so 4 members. Lay out the number cards to make a line plot in the
hallway. Have the students come out by tables to put their post it notes down where they
go. Once all the post it notes are on the line plot have the students come out with their
math journals to copy the line plot.
Turn to page 18 in math journal. The first question was already answered how many
people are in your family. Write in your answer. The second question is to make a line
plot using the data from the class. use an x in place of each post it. So for 2 how many x’s
are we going to make? For 3 how many are you going to put? Finish up and put your
hands on your head. Walk around and check their line plots. Have them answer the
2. questions on their own. Go over the answers and the questions and answers they came up
with on their own.
