5. Connectivism: A Learning Theory for a Digital Age
George Siemens
“Nurturing and maintaining connections are needed to facilitate
learning”
Connectivism is driven by the understanding that
decisions are based on rapidly altering
foundations. New information is continually being
acquired. The ability to draw distinctions between
important and unimportant information is vital.
The ability to recognize when new information
alters the landscape based on decisions made
yesterday is also critical.

6. Confronting the Challenges of
Participatory Culture
Henry Jenkins
According to Jenkins a participatory
culture has "relatively low
barriers to artistic expression and
civic engagement, strong support
for creating and sharing one's
creations, and some type of
informal mentorship whereby what
is known by the most experienced is
passed along to novices. He goes on
to state that in a participatory
culture members believe that their
contributions matter and feel some
degree of social connection with

Notes de l'éditeur
Go over 4 sections of presentation
1) Who am I?...What is your digital identity?
2) Collaboration...Who do you connect with on-line? Why do you connect with them?
3) The Kitchen Tools...What tools do you use?
4) The Challenges and Concerns of Connectedness (3Cs)...What are your concerns?
Why the test kitchen? It was clear to me that something was challenging the very foundations of classrooms, schools, & education.

Web 1.0 - information (one way) - read only
Web 2.0 - information is now 2-way - interactive - read/write
Web 3.0 - ?? - personalization, the semantic web, individualized...??
I thought I’d check out what the experts say...
“protecting knowledge” is a shifting viewpoint
Course example - Couros
The ideas of connectedness and open education are underlying philosophies for everything else.
I will be sharing my digital identity with you...Have had facebook since April 2009, my 13 year old only got it 8 months ago
I’m a private person, so this has been a huge learning curve for me.
As of last June 2009 - this was the sum total of my digital identity
**Activity** You are a google private investigator - find out everything you can about your partner...
So - you don’t have to dive in head first - instead, wade in slowly and get used to the water.
As we go through the day consider what is “sticky” for you - that’s a good clue for where to start.
Questions?
Social bookmarking - delicious or diigo or... Web-based
Tagging
Sharing bookmarks
YouTube
Show CinemaOwls
Social bookmarking, blogging, micro-blogging or Twitter, youtube
Question - who do you connect with on-line?
Not dear diary! A place to share ideas - collaborative through commenting
Sue Waters - huge help for any educators who are blogging
My Blog! - show my blog
Explain who Dr. Strange is...
Read quote
Typical network is top-down
My twitter “handle” - notice link to blog and a brief write-up
**Need someone to show you the way
Example of Twitter Feed - show Twitter Shout out (hopefully it worked!)
I keep FB for personal and family connections.
My favourite thing to do with the kitchen tools is make movies.
The term you’ll hear now is “digital storytelling’ - here’s one of my favourite films...**Show movie The Story of a Sign**
Show CogDog’s attribution helper
I encourage the back channel
Wrestling for control - instead we need to re-think how we teach.
Frozen or locked up networks
Little autonomy for choosing the tools you wish to work with (Mac vs. PC)
There’s not enough time in the day!
Am I always ‘on’ as an educator?
