Output
From a journal publishing perspective:
responsibilities
Role of the Journal Editor
• Public face of the journal
• Decides on what gets published
– type and standard of paper
• Sets editorial policies
– with editorial board & publishers’ editor
• Runs the peer review process
– supported by an editorial office funded by the publisher
Peer Review
• A methodological check
– soundness of argument
– supporting data and cited references
• Done by two anonymous academics
– (“the reviewers”)
• Reviewers peer review without payment
– costs of administering the selection of reviewers, postage and
document costs are borne by the journal
• On average 30% more papers are reviewed than published
Role of the Publisher
• Editorial (journal brand) management:
– acquisition of content
– monitor research trends
– monitor editorial office efficiency and efficacy
– monitor key success indicators
– editorial renewal
• Business management
• Production and online hosting
• Sales and marketing
Why publish?
Publishing is one of the necessary steps embedded in the
scientific research process.
• To present new, original results or methods
• To rationalize (refine, reinterpret) published results
• To review the field or to summarize a particular subject
• To publish that advance, not repeats, knowledge and understanding in a
certain, scientific field
• We should not publish:
– Reports of no scientific interest
– Work out of date
– Duplications of previously published work
– Incorrect/not acceptable conclusions
• You need a GOOD manuscript to present your contributions
to the scientific community
What is a good manuscript?
• Contains a scientific message that is clear, useful, and
exciting.
• Conveys the authors’ thoughts in a logical manner such
that the reader arrives at the same conclusions as the
author.
• Is constructed in the format that best showcases the
authors’ material, and written in a style that transmits the
message clearly.
• Content is essential
• Presentation is critical
• A good manuscript makes readers (especially
reviewers and editors) grasp the scientific significance
as EASILY as possible.
• Writing a good manuscript is NOT easy. Be prepared
to work hard on it.
– Cherish your own work – if you do not take care, why should
the journal?
– There is no secret recipe for success – just some simple rules,
dedication and hard work.
– Editors and reviewers are all busy scientists, just like you –
make things easy to save their time!
What is a good manuscript?
How to prepare a good manuscript - 1
Think about WHY you want to publish your work. (Actually,
you should check the originality of the idea at the very
beginning of your research.)
– Have you done something new and interesting?
– Is there anything challenging in your work?
– Is the work related directly to a current hot topic?
– Have you provided solutions to some difficult problems?
• If all answers are “yes”, then start preparations for your
manuscript
Decide on the type of the manuscript
– Full articles/Original articles: the most important papers. Often
substantial completed pieces of research that are of significance.
– Letters/Rapid Communications/Short communications: quick and
early communication of significant and original advances. Much
shorter than full articles (usually strictly limited).
– Review papers/perspectives: summarizing recent developments on a
specific topic. Highlighting important points that have previously been
reported and introduce no new information. Often submitted on
invitation.
– Self-evaluate your work. Is it sufficient for a full article? Or are your results so
thrilling that they should be shown as soon as possible?
– Ask your supervisor and your colleagues for advice on manuscript type.
Sometimes outsiders can see things more clearly than you.
How to prepare a good manuscript - 2
Choose the target journal
– Choose one right journal for your work. DO NOT gamble by
scattering your manuscript to many journals. Only submit once!
– Articles in your references will likely lead you to the right journal.
– Read recent publications (at least go through the abstracts) in
each candidate journal. Find out the hot topics, the accepted types
of articles, etc.
– Ask yourself the following questions:
• Is the journal peer-reviewed?
• Who is this journal’s audience?
• How long will it take to see your article in print?
• Is this a prestigious journal?
How to prepare a good manuscript - 3
Read the ‘Guide for Authors’.
– Apply the Guide for Authors to your manuscript, even to the first
draft (text layout, paper citation, nomenclature, figures and table,
etc ). It will save your time, and the editor’s.
– All editors hate wasting time on poorly prepared manuscripts.
They may well think that the author shows no respect.
How to prepare a good manuscript - 4
Important to remember
• Submit to the right journal (scope and prestige)
• Submit to one journal only
• Check the English
• Pay attention to structure
• Pay attention to journal requirements
• Be honest
Some special technical aspects of the
manuscript
Length of the manuscript:
• 25- 30 pages is the ideal length for a submitted
manuscript, including ESSENTIAL data only.
 Title page
 Abstract 1 paragraph
 Introduction 1.5-2 pages
 Methods 2-4 pages
 Results and Discussion 10-12 pages
 Conclusions 1-2 pages
 Figures 6-8
 Tables 1-3
 References 20-50 papers
• Letters or short communications have a stricter
limitation of the length. For example, 3000 words with
no more than 5 illustrations.
How to prepare a good manuscript –
Overview
The general structure of a full article
• Title
• Abstract
• Keywords
• Main text (IMRAD)
– Introduction
– Methods
– Results
– And
– Discussions
• Conclusion
• Acknowledgement
• References
• Supplementary materials
Make them easy for indexing and searching! (informative,
attractive, effective)
Journal space is precious. Make your article as brief as
possible. If clarity can be achieved in n words, never
use n+1
Frustrations of an Editor
• Publish or submit the same paper twice
• Cutting up your work in many short publications.
• Sloppy manuscripts (e.g. many typing errors).
• No clear statement of what changes has been made in
revised manuscript.
• Without arguments not following recommendations for
revision.
• Selective referencing
Summing up
• Before you start:
– Think about why you want to publish your work
– Decide on the type of manuscript
– Choose the target journal
– Read the Guide for Authors of the target journal

  • 2. www.emeraldinsight.com How to Prepare a Manuscript for International Journals Practical tips to help you get published
  • 3. key author needs: • certification of research, • continuation of funding and employment, • recognition and career Author paper data etc. Reviewer Publisher Editor journalResearch Output From a journal publishing perspective: responsibilities
  • 4. Role of the Journal Editor • Public face of the journal • Decides on what gets published – type and standard of paper • Sets editorial policies – with editorial board & publishers’ editor • Runs the peer review process – supported by an editorial office funded by the publisher
  • 5. Peer Review • A methodological check – soundness of argument – supporting data and cited references • Done by two anonymous academics – (“the reviewers”) • Reviewers peer review without payment – costs of administering the selection of reviewers, postage and document costs are borne by the journal • On average 30% more papers are reviewed than published
  • 6. Role of the Publisher • Editorial (journal brand) management: – acquisition of content – monitor research trends – monitor editorial office efficiency and efficacy – monitor key success indicators – editorial renewal • Business management • Production and online hosting • Sales and marketing
  • 7. Why publish? Publishing is one of the necessary steps embedded in the scientific research process. • To present new, original results or methods • To rationalize (refine, reinterpret) published results • To review the field or to summarize a particular subject • To publish that advance, not repeats, knowledge and understanding in a certain, scientific field • We should not publish: – Reports of no scientific interest – Work out of date – Duplications of previously published work – Incorrect/not acceptable conclusions • You need a GOOD manuscript to present your contributions to the scientific community
  • 8. What is a good manuscript? • Contains a scientific message that is clear, useful, and exciting. • Conveys the authors’ thoughts in a logical manner such that the reader arrives at the same conclusions as the author. • Is constructed in the format that best showcases the authors’ material, and written in a style that transmits the message clearly. • Content is essential
  • 9. • Presentation is critical • A good manuscript makes readers (especially reviewers and editors) grasp the scientific significance as EASILY as possible. • Writing a good manuscript is NOT easy. Be prepared to work hard on it. – Cherish your own work – if you do not take care, why should the journal? – There is no secret recipe for success – just some simple rules, dedication and hard work. – Editors and reviewers are all busy scientists, just like you – make things easy to save their time! What is a good manuscript?
  • 10. How to prepare a good manuscript - 1 Think about WHY you want to publish your work. (Actually, you should check the originality of the idea at the very beginning of your research.) – Have you done something new and interesting? – Is there anything challenging in your work? – Is the work related directly to a current hot topic? – Have you provided solutions to some difficult problems? • If all answers are “yes”, then start preparations for your manuscript
  • 11. Decide on the type of the manuscript – Full articles/Original articles: the most important papers. Often substantial completed pieces of research that are of significance. – Letters/Rapid Communications/Short communications: quick and early communication of significant and original advances. Much shorter than full articles (usually strictly limited). – Review papers/perspectives: summarizing recent developments on a specific topic. Highlighting important points that have previously been reported and introduce no new information. Often submitted on invitation. – Self-evaluate your work. Is it sufficient for a full article? Or are your results so thrilling that they should be shown as soon as possible? – Ask your supervisor and your colleagues for advice on manuscript type. Sometimes outsiders can see things more clearly than you. How to prepare a good manuscript - 2
  • 12. Choose the target journal – Choose one right journal for your work. DO NOT gamble by scattering your manuscript to many journals. Only submit once! – Articles in your references will likely lead you to the right journal. – Read recent publications (at least go through the abstracts) in each candidate journal. Find out the hot topics, the accepted types of articles, etc. – Ask yourself the following questions: • Is the journal peer-reviewed? • Who is this journal’s audience? • How long will it take to see your article in print? • Is this a prestigious journal? How to prepare a good manuscript - 3
  • 13. Read the ‘Guide for Authors’. – Apply the Guide for Authors to your manuscript, even to the first draft (text layout, paper citation, nomenclature, figures and table, etc ). It will save your time, and the editor’s. – All editors hate wasting time on poorly prepared manuscripts. They may well think that the author shows no respect. How to prepare a good manuscript - 4
  • 14. Important to remember • Submit to the right journal (scope and prestige) • Submit to one journal only • Check the English • Pay attention to structure • Pay attention to journal requirements • Be honest
  • 15. Some special technical aspects of the manuscript Length of the manuscript: • 25- 30 pages is the ideal length for a submitted manuscript, including ESSENTIAL data only.  Title page  Abstract 1 paragraph  Introduction 1.5-2 pages  Methods 2-4 pages  Results and Discussion 10-12 pages  Conclusions 1-2 pages  Figures 6-8  Tables 1-3  References 20-50 papers • Letters or short communications have a stricter limitation of the length. For example, 3000 words with no more than 5 illustrations.
  • 16. How to prepare a good manuscript – Overview The general structure of a full article • Title • Abstract • Keywords • Main text (IMRAD) – Introduction – Methods – Results – And – Discussions • Conclusion • Acknowledgement • References • Supplementary materials Make them easy for indexing and searching! (informative, attractive, effective) Journal space is precious. Make your article as brief as possible. If clarity can be achieved in n words, never use n+1
  • 17. Frustrations of an Editor • Publish or submit the same paper twice • Cutting up your work in many short publications. • Sloppy manuscripts (e.g. many typing errors). • No clear statement of what changes has been made in revised manuscript. • Without arguments not following recommendations for revision. • Selective referencing
  • 18. Summing up • Before you start: – Think about why you want to publish your work – Decide on the type of manuscript – Choose the target journal – Read the Guide for Authors of the target journal
