Subject : Biology Standard: VIII
Unit: Cell clusters Strength: 35
Lesson: Plant Tissues (Story) Duration: 40 minutes
Date: 26.10.2015
 To understandaboutdifferent planttissuesandtheirfunctions.
 To Identifydifferentplanttissues.
CONTENT ANALYSIS
New terms: Tissues, Parenchyma, Collenchyma, Sclerenchyma, Photosynthesis, Suberin,
Pectin, Cellulose
Facts:
Objectives:
 Tissue is a cellular organizational level intermediate between cells and a
complete organ
 A tissue is an ensemble of similar cells from the same origin that together carry
out a specific function.
 Once the cells of meristematic tissue divide to a certain extent, they become
specialized for a particular function is called differentiation.
 Once differentiation is accomplished, the cells lose their capability to divide and
the tissue becomes permanent tissue.
 Permanent tissues are of two types, simple permanent tissue and complex
permanent tissue.
 Simple permanent tissue is composed of similar types of cells.
 Simple permanent tissues are of three types, viz. parenchyma, collenchyma
and sclerenchyma
.
2
Concept: Simple plant tissues and their functions.
Teaching Learning Aids: Live Specimen - Leaf ,Stem of Boerhaavia
Chart- Pictures of Different Plant tissues
ICT - Plant Tissues Powerpoint presentation.
 Parenchyma makes the largest portion of a plant body.
 Parenchyma mainly works are packing material in plant parts.
 Parenchyma carries out photosynthesis and is then termed as chlorenchyma
 The cells of parenchyma have thin cell wall.
 They are loosely packed; with lot of intercellular spaces between them.
 The cell wall of collenchyma is thickened at corners.
 Intercellular spaces are very few.
 Collenchymas provides some degree of structural rigidity with flexibility.
 Collenchymas is present in leaf stalk; below the epidermis. Due to this, the
leaf talk can easily bend but does not break.
 The cell wall in sclerenchyma is highly thickened all around.
 The cells are dead and intercellular space is absent.
 Sclerenchyma provides structural rigidity to plant parts.
 Bark is composed of sclerenchyma.
 Another example of sclerenchyma can be seen in the coconut husk.

Classroom Activity
Teacher narrates the story of a Mother Tree
Once upon a time there lived a big tree in the centre of
the city. The mother tree had 3 sons, named
Parenchyma, sclerenchyma, and Collenchymas.One day
Mr. Parenchyma went on for a strike. Thus the entire
metabolism of mother tree got collapsed. Everybody
asked him the reason for the strike, thus he said that he
is the one whom helps in photosynthesis, which is made
of soft cells and contain chlorophyll. So I cannot do it
any more… On hearing this the elder brother
Collenchyma called him and told him that, Look my
dear, here is your twin brother Sclerenchyma, He alone
should provides strength and supportto mother tree.and
he is composed ofcells that are uniformly thick all
over the cell wall. And look at me dear I am composed
of cells that are thick only at the corners of the cell wall
and I gave provides flexibility and supportto
ourmother tree. But yet now, we never had regretted
about the hardness of our responsibilities as we
consider our duties as love towards our mother tree.
After hearing all these words Parenchyma understood
his mistake and said sorry for all his mistakes and
started loving, working for his mother tree.
Teacher asked students on different plant tissues
 What is a plant tissue?
 What are the different types of plant tissues?
 Can you say from the story?
Students says answers that Parenchyma,
Collenchym,Sclenchyma.
Then Teacher shows a Chart representing the pictures
of plant tissues.
Actual Response
4
Plants contain mainly three types of tissues.
Parenchyma, Collenchyma, sclerenchyma.
Parenchyma
 composed ofcells with the simplest structure.
 seen in the softparts of the plant.
 helps in photosynthesis and the storage of food.
Collenchyma
 composed ofcells that are thick only at the
corners ofthe cell wall.
 provides flexibility and supportto plant parts.
Sclerenchyma
 composed ofcells that are uniformly thick all
overthe cell wall.
 provides strength and supportto plant parts.

ACTIVITY1
Teacher asked the students that
You learned about different plant tissues.
Can you identify the tissues fron the picture?
It is a cross sectionof a plant. I will ask you randomly.
Are you ready?
Students says their answers. Teacher collects and
discuss the answers.

ACTIVITY 2
Now teacher divides the whole class into 5 groups.
Then provide Coconutleaf splinter, Coconutshell, and
a leaf of any plant to each group of students.
Collenchyma
Parenchyma
Sclerenchyma
7
Then ask them to identify the plant tissue prevalent in
these products.

Parenchyma
 What are the differenttypesof planttissues?
 What isthe functionof parenchyma?
 What isthe peculiarityof collenchyma?
 Collectextrainformationregarding differenttypesof parenchyma.
 Draw neatand labeleddiagramsof differentplanttissues.
