Wenatchee Enrichment Program
Identification and Services
How are students identified for participation in services provided by the
Enrichment Program?
There are two primary ways students may be identified for services:
1. Teachers may refer students to Talent Groups based on the student’s
demonstration of talent in the particular area being served such as
mathematical talent, verbal/linguistic talent, or visual/spatial skills. These classes may change
several times during the year and may be offered at any grade level. The following criteria are
used to help teachers identify students:
a. Consistent, advanced ability in the subject area, i.e., math, writing, art, etc.
b. Finishes work at a faster pace than most students (in this area)
c. Works at a greater level of complexity than most students (in this area)
d. Motivated or self-directed in topics of interest.
2. Students may be identified for the Talent Pool based on criteria outlined in the Washington
Administrative Code (WAC). Fourth and fifth grade students who are new to Wenatchee School
District and wish to be considered for identification should submit a Parent Referral form
available in each school office or on the Enrichment link at home.wsd.wednet.edu. Referrals are
due September 25 and may be made by parents, teachers, students and community members.
3. All current Wenatchee School District students are automatically considered for enrichment
services at 3rd grade. Initial services begin in October at 4th grade. Identification is based on
the following:
a. Evidence that the student scores in the top ten percent in cognitive ability as demonstrated by
a standardized ability test and at least in the top 50th percentile in reading and math;
b. Evidence that the student scores in the top five percent in reading and/or math;
c. Evidence that the student demonstrates behavioral characteristics for exceptional creativity.
Are there enrichment services available if my child does not qualify according to the above
criteria?
Our Enrichment Teaching Specialists try to offer numerous opportunities for all students to explore their
interests and talents. They often make presentations in classrooms on a variety of topics such as math
games, problem solving activities, improvisation, Junior Great Books discussions, and many more. In
addition, they may arrange for guest speakers to make presentations to students who are interested in a
topic or they may organize an assembly for the entire building. The Enrichment Specialist can also
work with the classroom teacher to provide further enrichment within the class, such as supplying
challenging materials, working with small groups, or consulting.
Who should I contact if I have questions about the Enrichment Program?
You may call the Enrichment Coordinator, Terri Bawden, at 662-9047 or you may contact the
Enrichment Specialist assigned to your building.
The Wenatchee School District complies with all federal and state rules and regulations and does not discriminate on the basis
of race, color, national origin, creed, sex, sexual orientation, including gender identity, disability, familial status, marital status
or age. This holds true for all staff and for students who are interested in participating in educational programs and/or
extracurricular school activities. Inquiries regarding compliance and/or grievance procedures may be directed to RCW Officer
and ADA Coordinator Mr. Steve Cole. Issues related to 504 should be directed to Mr. Chet Harum, Administrator for Student
and Support Services.
