2. Presenting…
These slides portray
some of the
technologies I
explored, used, and
learned about
through the
MDDE610 course.
They can not
encompass my
entire learning and
experiences, but my
intent was to
capture some of this
and share.
3. Sites visited along the way…
• My ePortfolio in Mahara
• Learning Management Systems
• Selecting Technology (SECTIONS model)
• Video and Web Conferencing
• Computer Assisted Instruction
• Social Media
• Web 2.0
• Mobile Learning
• Computing in the “Cloud”
• Change and Innovation Theory
6. As a As a Teacher User
Student
My LMS Technology Experiences User
Participation Editing labels, Create,

• I have experience as both a Archive and
student and an instructor Restore Course
using the features in a LMS Shells
• My first LMS experience was
FirstClass as a student at the Uploading Uploading Using the File
University of Alberta Documents different Manager or
Resources File Picker
• As a professional, I have
Navigation Building Online Updating the
mostly used Moodle as a
in the books, Quizzes and Calendar,
companion site with
through publishing them adding URL
synchronous online classes,
but also have experience with pages, topic for student access Blocks,
Blackboard and what was blocks, and in Moodle. Activities,
WebCT for posting online following (Often used Setting up the
student exams resource Respondus Grade books
inks which is an and other
exam-building features
software)
7. What I implemented during my MDDE610 studies
• I enhanced my Moodle
course page by integrating a
link to my Collaborate
classroom…the one stop
shop!
• I used a label to insert a
button to launch Collaborate
and embedded the URL to
the classroom within the
image.
• Students log into Moodle to
access the course contents
posted there, and then can
click on the button at 5:30 on
Tuesday evenings to join
their live online classes.
8. I also added labels which provide learners direction
within their course and learning activities
There were pros and cons to this:
PROs – Information is up front for
students to see, provides guidance
on what is required and what are
the week’s activities
CONs – Have you heard of the
“scroll of death”? Moodle topic
blocks can feel like that with so
much text to look at. Many
students do not use the navigation
links effectively and complain
about too much text!
10. Analysis of Technologies
I created a
spreadsheet to
analyze
technologies and
then converted it to
Word tables… Oh
my! The analysis
was much easier
than all of the
unnecessary
formatting that I
did!
However, I was
able to analyze
technologies that
would could be
implemented
within the
organization and
for my very specific
purposes.
11. Individual and Room-based Video Conferencing
• I have participated as
a student and in
meetings using Room-
based video
conferencing.
• I have only
experienced Skype
since starting this
Masters Program
• I’ve used Skype now
on several occasions to
meet with my fellow
students to work on
our group projects
12. Computer Assisted Instruction Analysis –
Lynda.com
I have additional pages in My Training Session
the ePortfolio capturing my
learning through CAI
14. Web 2.0
• I thought Wesch’s (2007) video
Web 2.0… The Machine is
US/ing Us was a poignant
illustration of how we are both
using “the machine” and in
doing so creating this new and
LARGE entity which is
infiltrating our culture,
identity, and our society as a
whole.
• Powerful tools that have
changed how we
communicate, create, and
learn.
• It was almost overwhelming …
hence my screen capture “Who
will organize all of t…”
15. Mashups
Oh the endless uses of
Web 2.0 applications…
Previous to MDDE610, I
had not heard the term
“mashups” other than in
reference to mixing music.
Combining various media
and applications to create
something new… very
cool!
I thought this introductory
“how to” from eHow Tech
was useful in seeing the
applications of mashups in
the classroom

16. What did I explore for Web 2.0 applications? LOTS
To name a few:
• I organized RSS Feeds on
my Internet Explorer
Toolbar
• I used Blogger to make
and publish a blog
posting
• I used another Web 2.0
application called
Poddle.com to create a
mind map
• I participated in a group
project to create a
pod/vodcast and post
these for access from the
web
• Our Athabasca Landing
site – and other social
media – Twitter and
Facebook…
17. Mobile Learning
Getting Started Today with
mLearning: Video podcasting.
This is a website that was
shared with our group after
our project on
Pod/Vodcasting. Wish I had
viewed this first!! Very good!

18. Cloud Computing
I set up my Google Account and have used I also created a Drop box account and have used
Google Drive for sharing documents and this more than any other technology in the
course for storing and retrieving files. I don’t
Blogger for my first Blog Post know why I didn’t create one sooner!
19. Change and Innovation theory
Innovators see new ways to approach
problems or conduct processes and have a
desire to implement such change.
Change theory emphasizes that there must
first be a need and a will to change before it is
adopted (Unfreezing). Convince them!!
Adopt Early!!
“For change to be effective it must be
collaborative and participative, and take
place at a group level if individual behaviour
is to shift” from Organization Development
