MCDONALDS PAN SHOT (INTRO):
Everywhere you walk, everywhere you look, fast food. Every day, thousands of
teenagers indulge in burgers, fried chicken and chips. The problems of obesity
have been increasing year on year. Over 30% of children and teens aged 6 to 19
are overweight, which has tripled since the 80s. Welcome to fast food generation.
FIRST voxpops:
We investigated one of the biggest cities in the UK, Birmingham. Our research
starts in Solihull Sixth Form. This is where we spent numerous days researching
into these teenagers lives. Specifically, their relationship to fast food, and this is
what they had to say.
SECOND voxpops:
We also asked students of the sixth form if they ate their 5 a day and the answers
were not shocking
THIRD voxpop:
And no one knew exactly what a calorie was either
FOURTH voxpop:
Do they even know what their daily calorie in take is?
It is recommended that we consume 1500 miligrams of salt per day. You may not
be surprised to hear that mcdonalds quarter pounder with cheese contains the
majority of your recommended daily salt intake at 1100 miligrames. The worst
comes from kfc’s chicken drumsticks. Four drumsticks pack in a massive 1520
milgrames of salt. That’s 20 miligrames more than your recommended daily
allowance.
It is recommended that we consume no more than 30 grams of sugar per day.
Here, the main culprit is the mcdonalds regular coke, which packs in over 76
grams of sugar.
More than half the meals eaten out in Britain are in fast food restaurants.
Alarmingly, figures reveal that burgers, fried chicken, pizza kebabs and take out
curry account for 50.4% of meals brought outside the home. The fast food boom
may worry health experts who see this as likely to influence the national obesity
epidemic across all age groups.
Many fast food options contain trans fats, which are the worst fats for your
health. Trans fats increase your risk of heart disease and high cholestral and we
should be restricting them from our diet. This is more difficult if you eat fast food
on a regular basis. French fries, onion rings and many other deep fried options
can contain 5 or more grams of trans fats per serving. Equally as shocking is the
saturated fat content of certain foods. The burger king double whopper contains
a whopping 23 grams of saturated fat, more than you should eat for an entire
day.
2. Intro for ssfc pan: our research into young people’s fast food consumption starts
in solihull sixth form. (shorten pan)
Into to charlotte interview: The youth of today love this stuff; they ache for the
taste of that chicken nugget and their minds yearn at the thought of a cheese-
plastered hamburger. Here is Charlotte Simmonds sharing her insights, as a
teacher, into the effects of fast food on academic performance.
Kids visit fast food chains now because of the cheap and quickly available food.
But do they really get that the grease, fat covered
Most of us know that fast food is devastating for our health, but still one in five of
us in the UK visit a fast food restaurant. The hunger for grease, fat and sugar is
not just here, it’s on a global scale, with McDonalds selling us 46 million meals a
day. That’s 1.05 billion a year in the UK alone. And it doesn’t end there… Maccy
D’s still own over 30,000 branches across six continents.
Fast food has become unavoidable; McDonalds, burger kings and KFCs are
popping up everywhere… shopping centres, service stations, drive thrus, petrol
stations, train stations, airports, department stores, amusement parks. This is
true McDonaldisation.
But, are the fast food companies solely to blame for this burst in obesity and
endless health problems? Where does personal responsibility overtake the
responsibility of schools and food companies to teach kids about this stuff?
The price of fast food is more damaging and complex than anyone would
originally guess. Health issues come down to more than the personal choice to
consume fast food, but down to education of these impending health issues.
What would happen if we put t
CONCLUSION:
After the break, we will speaking to nutritionists and other experts to answer the
question: WHAT IS THE REAL PRICE OF FAST FOOD?
