What characterises academic writing?
It is perhaps tempting to think that Academic Writing (AW) is guided by a fairly homogeneous set
of rules and aspects. This is so, possibly because we frequently see books with titles such as
Academic Writing and Writing Academic English, and we hear from fellow students, teachers,
colleagues and friends about the need for skills within written academic English.
However, even if there arguably are core aspects and skills, it is important to acknowledge the fact
that many differences exist when it comes to how certain disciplines grapple the challenges of writing
academic discourse. The question, then, is whether we should rather talk about Academic Writings,
to highlight this heterogeneity.

On the whole, this means that academic writing is generally characterised by a high degree of
formality. However, the characteristic of impersonal voice, for example, is not without contention.
Even though tables of comparison like the one above can sometimes serve the purpose of
highlighting differences between writing that is more academically oriented, and less formal
writing, which is used in other domains, it can indeed be dangerous to paint such a polarised picture.
We need to remember, for example, that a more subjective and personal style does occur in some
text types in some academic disciplines. Therefore, a table like the one presented above should be
treated with caution and only be seen as a very coarse and simplified view of the characteristics of
academic writing.
Another example of advice given to students on how to write academic English is taken from a
textbook for graduate students written by Swales and Feak (1994). In the introductory chapter, the
authors present six characteristic considerations of academic writing: audience, purpose,
organisation, style, flow, and presentation. When discussing style, they give the following advice on
how to maintain a formal academic writing style.

got a purpose. The cause of this subtype is unknown, but we do know that this type of schizophrenia
usually begins before age 25.
Some symptoms are: active behavior, but in an aimless and not constructive way, inappropriate
emotional responses, delusions, grimacing, lack of motivation, hallucinations, and a weird way of
speaking.
Some of these symptoms are also seen in other types of schizophrenia. The biggest difference is that

1. What is a neutralisation reaction?
A neutralisation reaction is a chemical reaction that occurs when equivalent amounts of acid and a
base react to produce salt and water (H2O) (The FreeDictionary.com,2017). The H+(q) ions from an
acid react with the OH‾ ions from an alkali. The equation for this reaction is:
H+(aq)+OH‾(aq)=H2O(l). For example, hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide solution react
with each other and form water and sodium chloride solution. The acid consists of H+ ions and
Cl‾ ions, and the alkali contains Na+ ions and OH‾ ions. The H+ ions and OH‾ ions create

My critique of this study is quite simple. I do believe the study has positive as well as several
limitations. On the positive side, this research involved repeated observations of the same variables
over a twelve–year period of time. The study made observing changes more accurate by tracking
three different age groups; which can be applied in other fields. The study was mostly
observational, in the sense that they observe without manipulating it. The internal and external
validity of this study is in question. In order for a sample to yield valid and reliable information
an appropriate sample size must be selected. The sample in the group of people was only
comprised of 98 girls; which may not represent the population well. Also the study sample was
limited to Caucasian females from one specific residential community/school district in only one
state. The study didn't mention sampling any minority groups. Studying females as well as subjects
from other residential facilities could have provided more credibility to the results. Also, it was not
mentioned if the research participants knew about the risks involved in research and if they were
being studied. Was an informed consent obtained? Did a debriefing occur? The

help of an acid through a reaction known as an E1 mechanism.1 The first step of an E1 reaction is
the formation of a carbocation intermediate. This carbocation is produced by the removal of a
halogen or a substituted group.2 In this experiment, the hydroxy (OH ) group of the alcohol is
removed and this produces the carbocation. The OH– group is removed due to the presence of
phosphoric acid. The phosphoric acid is used in the process of adding an additional H+ to the OH–
group on the alcohol and assists the OH– in leaving, making the reaction an acid catalyzed
dehydration. Another reagent used along with phosphoric acid is heat, which is often used in acid
catalyzed dehydration.1 The formation of the carbocation intermediate is followed by removal of a
hydrogen that is taken up by a water molecule in the mixture, and this leads to the production of a
hydronium (H3O+) ion.2 Carbocations are more stable when they are more substituted; therefore,
tertiary carbocations are most stable. The last step of the reaction creates an alkene. When an
alcohol is dehydrated through an E1 reaction, two alkene molecules are created. The slow step of
this E1 reaction is the removal of the OH– group, which is known as the leaving group. Since the
unimolecular rate–determining step is the slow step, this makes the reaction an E1 mechanism.1 The

scrapes. Unexplained loss of toys, school supplies, clothing, lunches, or money and/or someone who
does not want to go to school or other activities with peers. Bullies can be anybody, your next–door
neighbor, a person you go to school with, Cyber Bullies and Workplace Bullies. Some effects of
Bullying can be as small as poor school adjustment and sleep difficulties all the way up to
depression and suicide. Leadership can play many roles in the fight against Bullying. I feel that
people need to be strong against others that may feel they are leaders but show signs of bullying.
Leaders do not intentional hurt their peers, they naturally help others around them to succeed in
their own lives. I have played sports since I was 5 years old. I have played soccer, baseball and
football. I still play football with the TYSF Rams Organization. I have been with most of my
teammates since I started football. This has helped me to stay focused in school, become a leader
in my classes and surround myself with those that have the same goals in life. I know that if I do
not do well in school, I cannot play sports, so I stay focused and I do not let others poorly
influence me. I think that sports programs encourage positivity and build the youth to be strong.
Our team's main goals is Family, School, Football. Always put your family first, and we must do
well in school to play football. Coaches and Teachers always focus on helping the team and
students to be leaders in life, just as parents do. A part of being united is being with the people that
want the best for you, making positive decisions and not showing weakness to anyone. Everyone
