will be, it could be the person sitting right next . Statistics reveal that approximately three million
youths, between 12–18, have either thought about or attempted suicide in the past year. More than 1

Only in the past two decades, have depression and suicide been taken seriously. Depression is an

Adolescence is a stressful experience for all teens. It is a time of physical and social changes
producing rapid mood swings from sadness to elation. Even an emotionally healthy teenager may
have the constant fear of not being good enough, not making the varsity team, or getting good
grades. Special situations such as a parents divorce can trigger intense sadness and feelings of
wanting to die.
People who usually experience depression, can seem fine. But there are many key signs to show that
they are depressed. Such as, change in school performance, eating habits change, constant
unhappiness, low self esteem, guilt, social isolation, inability to concentrate, irritable or angered
easily, or has a severe lost of energy.
For a teen suffering from severe depression, has feelings of worthlessness that dominates their day.
Despair is ever present and emotional pain feels like it will never end. Any situation of anger or
disappointment may cause the teen to cross the line from wanting to die, to actually trying to kill
themselves.

The most common reasons or risk factors to why people would resort to suicide are depression,
bullying, hopelessness, fear, perfectionism, regrets, and etc. Over the years the suicide rate keeps

This week clinical I felt better prepared than I did with my first week. I was able to focus a lot
more on interpersonal skills and develop therapeutic relationship with my patients. In terms of
Mental Status Examination (MSE), this assessment provided me with a helpful base of information
from which to observe changes, progress, and monitor risks. Especially, suicide risk assessment is a
gateway to patient treatment and management. The purpose of suicide risk assessment is to identify
treatable and modifiable risks and protective factors that inform the patient's treatment and safety
management requirements. I got insight into how important it is to document suicide risk
assessments with sufficient information. Documentation of suicide risk assessments facilitates
continuity of care and promotes communication between staff members across changing shifts. It is
easy for suicidal patients to "fall through the cracks" of a busy psychiatric unit that has rapid patient

I stress about if i'll graduate high school, if my friends will judge me for the slightest mistakes, if i
can sleep more than 3 hours tonight. My self worth is diminishing, and it's getting harder to wake

this amongst my friends and peers as well. Their confidence is only decreasing, and their demeanors
are usually depressing or pessimistic. This is evident through the positive trend of suicide. A trend

There are several risk factors that put Joanne at High Risk for suicide. She states that she did not
want to stay and talk, but that she "just wanted to go for a drive" and has a gun in the car, so she is
at a high risk given the methods and accessibility to those methods (Jackson–Cherry & Erford, 2018).
She has previous suicide attempts, while there is no time frame on when those prior attempts took
place, it places her in at a moderate risk at the very least (if 1 to 5 years ago) (Jackson–Cherry &
Erford, 2018). She does not report loneliness or hopelessness at this current moment, but given her
history of depression, past divorce and no significant other, admissions of guilt over an affair,
having no hobbies and getting "all her satisfaction" from work, it is likely that she has or current is
experiencing some level of loneliness, and her past attempts are potentially indicative of
hopelessness; all these factors put her at a minimum of a moderate risk, but further information
would probably lead to a high risk. The divorce, lack of relationship or mention of friendships does
put the loneliness at a high risk due to having limited support (Jackson–Cherry & Erford, 2018).

For example, nine out of ten individuals who commit suicide give clues to others before a suicide
attempt (King, 1999). Warning signs include: rage, anger, seeking revenge; acting reckless or
engaging in risky activities, seemingly without thinking; a feeling of being trapped, as if there is
no way out; increasing alcohol or drug use; withdrawing from friends, family, or society;
experiencing anxiety and/or agitation; being unable to sleep or sleeping excessively; dramatic
mood changes; and perceiving no reason for living or no sense of purpose in life (Miller &
Eckert, 2009). It is suggested that youth who speak of suicide should be taken seriously because it
is not just talk. Those individuals are the most likely to attempt suicide (King, 1999). Students who
are suicidal will try to talk to anyone that will listen about their suicidal thoughts, so people should
be available to students and accepting to be that person that the student feels that they can go to
(Helsel, 2001). To understand these warning signs, one has to know what causes these behaviors to
come about. One of these aspects has to do with risks that come from school difficulties.
Risks from school difficulties
Research states that youth who have difficulties in school are at an increased risk of committing
suicide (Walsh & Eggert, 2007). Risk factors can help explain or predict youth suicidal behaviors

The National Suicide Prevention Model
It is stated by The National Suicide Research Foundation that the Government could significantly
reduce the number of people taking their own lives by adopting a suicide prevention programme
that has reduced the suicide rate in Germany by 15 per cent. (Hegerl,U. Wittenburg L, Arensman E,
Van Audenhove C, Coyne JC, McDaid D et al.2009)
Prof Ella Arensman, the foundation's director of research, said research shows that the approach
proved highly effective in helping to prevent suicide and improve services for those most at risk.

However, most are not working together to improve support or training while all are drawing on
funding or charity and sending out different messages. Prof Arensman said the approach taken in
Germany could be easily adopted in Ireland as it mirrored many of the activities taking place here
under the State's 10–year suicide prevention strategy, Reach Out. "It just means approaching suicide
in a more intensive, targeted and sustainable way," she said.
A European network (the European Alliance Against Depression) advocating the programme–
known as a "multi–level intervention programme" – has been formed and is now active across 10
countries. In this case, Prof Arensman said she had a meeting with senior officials in the spring of
2010 at the Department of Health to alert them to what she said was a significant public health
risk."There needed to be a rapid response in terms of counseling back–up services, training for local
GPs and awareness and high–quality support for bereaved families," she said. "A faster response
would have been facilitated if such a multilevel intervention programme would have been in place".

Suicide Prevention Week Keynote Event: A Call For Further Action
Three people in my life have completed suicide; my uncle, my mom's late fiance, and my step
brother on my dad's side, within four years of each other. I've witnessed each parental figure in my
life become compromised by grief and the inevitable pain accompanying it, and I've seen the way
depression can plague someone so deeply, even without the ending of suicide. The prevalence and
growing numbers of deaths by suicide calls for a revised manner of education on all mental
illnesses and the preventative measures one can take to reduce risk. Initially, when I heard of the
Suicide Prevention Week Keynote event with Jamie Tworkowski (founder of 'To Write Love On
Her Arms') I was thrilled. Hosting such an event on a college campus, presenting to a population
greatly affected by mental illness, is demonstrative of the steps that should be taken toward raising
awareness. Any opportunity for a comprehensive view on mental health and its significance is one to
be taken advantage of. However, as the night proceeded, I did take note of several things that
would improve the layout of any future events, as well as further deepen an individual's
comprehension of mental illness. The event as a whole did indeed give insight on the importance of
asking for help, however the lack of structure prevented the audience from receiving a truly
