Defining E-learning As part of my contribution to this forum, and perhaps to the wider national discussion on other issues related to education, I will address the question of e-learning, or as some people may think of it, technology-based learning. The term e-learning covers a broad set of applications and processes, including computer-based learning, web-based learning, virtual classrooms and digital collaboration. We define e-learning as the delivery of teaching content via all electronic media, including the Internet, intranets, extranets, satellite broadcasts, audio/video material, interactive TV and CD-ROM. Even so, e-learning is defined more narrowly than distance learning, which includes text-based learning, and courses conducted by written correspondence.
Researchers on e-learning have shown that there are several advantages to this method of teaching, which are not always available with traditional classroom-based methods of teaching. One of the most important advantages is the fact that e-learning methods put the student or learner at the centre of the process and increase learning effectiveness. In addition to this, it has been found that the use of media combined with cooperation and activity-based techniques, helps learners to retain more of their course material. 0ther advantages for the learner include: Time and space independence On-demand availability Round the clock access to materials Self-pacing for slow or quick learners Accommodation of different learning styles Interactivity among users Improved instructor-student or student-student communication Learning by doing – greater retention Immediate feedback More efficient time utilization in the virtual classroom For administrators, e-learning helps institutions achieve many of their objectives. This is especially so, in an environment in which universities and other institutions of higher education are threatened by financial cutbacks and often don’t have enough resources to meet the needs of their student population.
