This document outlines an advocacy action plan to provide healthy, low-sodium snacks and meal plans to children with nephrotic syndrome. The plan involves developing marketing materials and recipes, then presenting the plan to the Nephrotic Syndrome Foundation for support. The goal is to help families of children with nephrotic syndrome learn the importance of a low-sodium diet through cooking classes and accessible recipes. Potential partners may include local children's hospitals. The plan's budget is $2000 and its impact will be evaluated through parent feedback and comparisons of children's health before and after following the meal plans. “A Beautiful Life with Nephrotic Syndrome”
By: Ana Rodriguez
KINE-4354 PUBLIC HEALTH ADVOCACY & LEADERSHIP
November 24, 2021
Healthy, delicious, and affordablesnacks and meal plans will beoffered to children with Nephrotic syndrome. A diet low in
sodiumis necessary for patients with Nephrotic syndrome and our snacks and meal plans will offer justthat. The Nephrotic
Syndrome Foundation is the organization I plan to proposethe advocacy plan to.The NS foundation will provideme the
access to reach the correctaudience and can be a source of promotion for healthy eating in nephrotic syndrome children.
Parents and children will learn aboutthe importance of followinga lowsodiumdiet to enhance the lives of their children
livingwith nephrotic syndrome.
The roadmap to achievea successful advocacy action plan will consistof developinga marketing plan,
design an eye-catching packageto attract potential buyers, speak to potential sponsors and vendors, execute a successful
product launch. The road will notbe easy and might take a lotof convincing, butit will beworth every sweat and tear to
help children dealingwith nephrotic syndrome.
Step#2: CompellingIdea/Story(i.e.,Your
"WHY")
What: What is the issue youare
tryingto change or impact?
Nephrotic syndrome is a rarekidney disorder that can occur in children and adults. The body excretes too much protein
into the urinethat results in extreme swellingor edema. My niece Kailyn was diagnosed with Nephrotic syndrome at the
tender age of six, and ithas been an exhaustingroller coaster watchingher undergo various medical procedures dueto this
disorder. My niece must take seven daily medicationsas well as IVtreatments every few months justso she can survive,
and her kidneys will notshut down. This projectis extremely important and dear to my heart because I want to provide a
sourceof hope to children and their families goingthrough this difficultand lifechangingjourney.

So What? Whydo you care? Why
shouldyourviewer/audiencecare?
A healthy diet is importantto every human being, but it is crucial for individualswith this disorder. Parents would want to
do absolutely anythingfor their child to make their journey with nephrotic syndrome easier, and when they are awareof
how detrimental a diet low in sodiumis and how it affects their child’s health, they will beeager to learn more. A healthy
diet has been one of the biggest factors in allowingmy niece to livea beautiful lifeall whilebattlingthis terribledisorder.A
diet low in sodiumhas diminished her puffy face and body edema, and my family is a true believer in how a healthy diet
can cure the body.
Step#3: NowWhat? Your AdvocacyAction
Plan
Mission/Vision
Goals/Objectives
Program Activities
The mission for my advocacy action plan isto providenutritious and affordablesnacks and freemeal plans to children with
nephrotic syndrome so they don’t feel left out. The vision is for children dealingwith this syndrometo feel likethey can
lead a “normal” lifewithout missingout on cute and yummy snacks. Healthy eatingdoes not have to be unaffordable, and
nor should it.Children with this diseasemustbe delicateabouttheir diet because it can jeopardizetheir health.
The goal is to help families learn aboutthe importance of a clean and healthy diet for their children. There is currently no
cure for Nephrotic syndrome, and lifestylechanges arenecessary to avoid any kind of relapsing.
Program activities will consistof cookingclasses with parents and children,to showthem delicious and easy plates thatare
low on sodiumand sugar.Monthly or Biweekly cookingclasses will beoffered to parents and children for a very low costof
$20. Our program will provideall supplies and tools and parents will getto take the amazingplate they prepared to their
home.
Step#4: ResourcesandPotential
Partners/Funders
Cost of proposedaction
Evaluation(Howyouwill prove that
youdid whatyousaid youwould
do)
The cost of the proposed action plan will costaround $2000.The action plan will begin with a precisely lownumber of
snack quantities to ensure that we don’t overspend without havingthe clientele.By savinghundreds on promotion by
advertisingour snacks on free social media platforms, wewill be ableto provide the best top-quality ingredients. As time
progresses and our order numbers increases,we will takethe appropriatemeasures to reinvestinto our action plan to
produce the necessary snacks needed. Free meal plans will also behanded out to parents and a website will beavailableas
well to showcaseall ingredients and videos demonstratinghow to complete the healthy and delicious snacksor meals.
Potential partners and funders will be local children’s hospitalsspecifically under their kidney units. All children regardless
of health status should be given healthy snacks, instead of the current snacks availabletoday.
I will provethat my snacks arehealthy and beneficial to children dealingwith nephrotic syndrome by showcasingbefore
and after photos of children thatfollowmy proposed meal plans.Parents can leavean honest review without fear of our
group deleting negative reviews. Our action plan welcomes all opinions, good or bad.
Step#5 Conclusion/Call toAction Parents serve as their children’s rolemodels and hero’s, that’s why modeled behavior is so important. When a child is
diagnosed with Nephrotic syndrome, it takes a lifestylechangefrom the entire family for them to be successful.Adiet low
in sodiumseems almostimpossiblein our currentworld, and it would be extremely difficultfor a child to understand why
everyone around them can eat unhealthy foods without remorse and they are not allowed to do so. A healthy diet is
important for everyone, and specially for individuals thatareimmunocompromised. A child will notbe ableto differentiate
what they are“missingout” if their family eats what they eat. By cleaningout our family’s food pantry after the diagnosis
and hospitalization of my niece, it made the biggestdifference in her current health. It is challengingand tremendously
difficultto avoid the fastfoods and high sodiumfoods we areused to, but nothing beats havingKailyn growup to be
healthy and strong and no longer completely dependent on medication to survive.
