 The suffix –algesia
from the Greek word
algesis, means pain.
 It is used quite often in
relationship with the
nervous system.
 Some examples are
analgesia and
hyperalgesia.

3. -ALGESIA
 Analgesia is the lack
of pain, another
derivative is
analgesic.  Hyperalgesia is when

narcotic pain reliever sensitivity to pain
 Can be treated with
NSAID’s and
glucocorticoids

4. -PHASIA
 The suffix –phasia from
the Greek means to
talk or speak.
 It is used in the medical
field with speech
impediments, or
speech conditions.
 Some examples are:
aphasia, dysphasia,
and allophasia.

5. -PHASIA
 Aphasia means complete inability
to communicate
 Dysphasia means impaired
ability to communicate
 They are often used with the
same meaning, difficulty
communicating due to an injury
to the brain.
 Acute cases occur when a stroke
or an accident affects the brain
 Progressive cases occur when a
tumor or dementia is the cause of
loss of speech.
