Effective leadership and management skills is possible for, and very much needed by, school principals. This short talk explores some ideas on how to be more effective and efficient.

How do we get better at what we do? Is it even possible to do things better?
Who we are as human beings determine who and what we are in our schools and our communities. It is like the priest who was walking through the forest when some bad-looking guys jumped on him and demanded to know:
Who are you?
Where are you going?
Why are you going there?
It was then that the priest responded by asking: how much do they pay you to do this? And when the answer was 50c per day – he offered to employ this young man for the rest of his life, and pay him this amount. And the only thing that the man had to do was to ask the priest those three questions every day.
Who are you? Where are you going with your life? And why are you going in that direction?
Because it is only when we know ourselves sufficiently that we can start to know those around us. Something that is critical in being able to lead other successfully.
The Rolling Stones said “Like a rolling stone” – you’ve got to keep moving… Don’t let someone say about you that you USED to be good.
A bit of a mental shift from the Rolling Stones to Leonardo da Vinci, but he said the following:
Iron rusts from disuse;
stagnant water loses its purity, and in cold weather becomes frozen;
even so does inaction sap the vigours of the mind.
We have a choice – every day: sit back and stay nice & cozy in you comfort zone, or show some courage and take a step outside. …
But what for, you say? Well, you can stay as you are for the rest of your life – be it yourself, the school, the organisation or the country;
Or… you can get better at who and what you are, and what you do.
So? What do we need to do to get better?
Well, if I listen to many organisations and individuals that are involved in the daily challenges facing us in our communities and our country - I’ll have to say we still have a lot to learn.
The best part is that we don’t have to figure it all out by ourselves – NO! Others already did the hard work.
So, in order for you, and you, and you, and all the organisations here, to get better…
1. Compare! - Of course you will have to compare what you do and how you do things with a variety of individuals and organisations or you may just start believing that you are the King!
2. Just do it! – Like project management as well – the only way to get things done is to get of your butt and just do it.
3. Dream! – Oscar Pistorius won’t settle for less than a podium in the Olympics, alongside able-bodied athletes. Called the “fastest thing on no legs”, he has shattered 26 world records in the last 4 years! Why can’t you?
You’ve got to have that vision of who, and what and where you want to be – and then WORK at it. Nothing in life comes for free, except the most incredible wisdom from those that’s done it before us.
How do I become a better leader and a manager of projects in my school and community? It’s actually much simpler than we would first belief.
1. Know yourself, your strengths, and your weaknesses/limitations.
2. Recognise and understand what others do in the area in which you hope to become the best.
3. Use the best processes available.
4. Build on these processes to create even better ones.
5. Never stop improving. Kaizen.
But don’t make the mistake to leave it until your school is in trouble. You have to be pro-active!! Think ahead. Be prepared.
The easiest, but also the most difficult thing to do is to keep on striving for bigger success when you are out in front. You will have to outwit, outplay and outlast all your competitors if you truly want to become the best. You will have to plan well in advance and implement that plan with military precision.
If you cannot imagine yourself or your school as the best, … you’ve got a problem. You HAVE to be able to visualize. Create that picture, and then work strategically towards attaining your goals. Write it down, don’t just try and do it in your head. Become a survivor and ultimately a winner…
The benchmarking process has the following typical steps:
Identify and understand YOUR processes
Agree what and who to benchmark against
Collect the data
Analyse the data and identify the gaps
Plan and implement the improvements
Review the process
… and do it again!
This is where Project Management comes in. I am absolutely passionate about Project Management as I have on numerous occasions seen the positive effects of it in my own work and personal life.
Project Management is not that difficult. We just have to be systematic in what we do. And we just have to do it!
The basic phases in a project life cycle is initiation, planning, executing and closing. This brief talk will never be enough to expose you to this fascinating and amazing field. Suffice to say that it is doing what we have to do in a planned, coordinated, systematic and logical way.
Without willingness to change, to work hard, to do things differently – we don’t have much of a chance to become the leaders that will set new standards in our schools and communities.
Some final points:
Success on the outside begins within
Do the things you fear
The universe favors the brave. When you resolve to lift your life to its highest level, the strength of your soul will guide you to a magical place with magnificent treasures. – The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari
