The presentation offers some examples of frames of analysis to interpret web-based visual material. Also, it problematises the purposes underlying online & media texts and the metaphors that multi modalities generate.

We resignify by de-constructing
Post-structuralists have deconstructed the structure
of storytelling. But they had to bring it forward first,
to name it and then change the script and the
narrative of whose are the stories we are telling,
what perspectives are taken and whose voices are
heard, valued and considered.

Frames of analysis, examples
Discourse analysis: language is social practice
Interaction analysis: verbal, but not exclusively
Phenomenological analysis: ‘catness’ as a phenomenon
Thematic analysis: identifies patterns of meaning
Metaphor analysis: target & source domain, conventionalized
& deliberate; in thought, in action & in language

What are the purposes underlying the article from Yle (Finnish
national broadcast)?
What metaphors of the refugee does it generate?
How does the design of the website page influence the purposes?
How does the design of the website page relate to the metaphors
that emerge out of this article?

What are the facts behind this photo? Where
was it taken? What was the historical event?
The photo tells a story of suffering, loss,
despair, as outcomes of atrocities and war.
Does it matter to claim that the tragic event
happened in Syria, when this really happened in
Gaza?
Would this claim be an example of distorted
communication? And, therefore, of distorted
reality? In what ways?

Notes de l'éditeur
A metaphor occurs when we talk about something by means of something else and, therefore, a stretch or twist is required for sense making (Lakoff 1993, Lakoff and Johnson 1980, Ricoeur 1978, Steen 2011). This metaphorical twist involves a movement to a target domain (in this case: telling stories) to explain what, for instance, technologically-enhanced practices in the field actually mean nowadays.

Post-structulists have deconstructed the structure by bringing it forward first
Questions seeking response in a project about narrative and storytelling --
When we take a pic or shoot a video and post on instagram we do this to entertain ourselves and our friends. But let’s face it, the social media are more than entretainment, than just having fun. They are mainly for passing the message, creating an audience, sharing thoughts & experiences and promoting our work. Also they are about finding partners, setting groups and initial ideas for projects. Twitter is one good example of multidimensional purposes of posting. It is used by politicians, like the ex- and the current POTUS. Rumors have it that Trump would not have won the elections if he had not been updating his profile. The social media is power, the power to open up pathways and make your voice heard. Knowing the social media means you can use ths power. Knowing the narrative of the social media means you can make purposeful and relevant use of this power. it means to use this power of knowledge to promote social action and social responsibility if you choose to be a social media activist, to establish a community of computer scientints to develop open software if you choose to be contributing to the cyberculture and share the ideals of peer to peer and the commons.
