17. WORKFLOWS &
PROCESS
AUTOMATION
● The save order of execution is a sequence of
events that occur when a record is saved in
Salesforce.
● These events (DML operations) are executed
when an insert, update or upsert operation
occurs.
● All events need to execute successfully before
the data is committed to the database
Setup -> Debug Logs
18. Process Automation - Order of Execution - Example of automated processes
● A User / Import Wizard / Data Loader is creating a Lead record - BUT
JUST BEFORE STORING ALL DATA IN SALESFORCE’S DATABASE - this
happens:
○ There is a Lead assignment rule defined in Salesforce that assigns
all “Hot” leads to the user “Nick Adams”.
○ Then there is a workflow rule with field update action defined that
sets the Industry picklist field of Lead to “Technology” if City is
San Francisco.
○ Next, there is a Process Builder with criteria if Lead Status is “Site
Visit’ then a Site Visit record should be created automatically
mapping values from Lead.

19. Process Automation - Process Builder / Order of Execution
● Best Practice: ONE OBJECT - ONE PROCESS
○ trigger: when record is created or edited and then:
○ New Event (DML): insert isNew ()
○ Update priorvalue (field)
○ Then you can use verify next step to make a chain of triggers and
rules

20. Process Automation - Order of Execution - Example of automated processes
WORKFLOWS &
PROCESS
AUTOMATION
Salesforce is developing new industries
(Retail, Manufacturing) and expanding
existing ones (Financial Services, Insurance,
Health Cloud, Education Cloud, Non Profit
Cloud)
And FLOWS have a key role in that strategy.
21. Process Automation - Order of Execution - Example of automated processes
WORKFLOWS &
PROCESS
AUTOMATION
● Flow Builder: there’s input from user (screens)
● Process Builder: automation (can invoke a Flow)
● Workflow Rules: if you need to send an outbound message
(many existing orgs have them, so you better know them)
● Approval Process: user submit a loan / vacation request, process
send it to approver
22. Process Automation - Order of Execution - Example of automated processes
WORKFLOWS &
PROCESS
AUTOMATION
1. Process Builder: CANNOT
2. Post to a community feed.
3. Submit a related record for approval. (Approval Process)
4. Delete records. (use a FLOW)
5. Create a bunch of records and associate them with each other.
6. Perform complex logic.(Apex)
7. Send an outbound message (Use a Workflow rule)

Confession #441
Hard-coded a record type ID in a Process Builder process in Sandbox.
Deployed to production and activated.
Went on vacation.
Confession #429
400,000 new records loaded to Prod… because of an unknown workflow
that wasn’t deactivated, an email went out to the customer contact on each
record.
Confession #425
I sent millions of pounds worth of purchase orders to suppliers when
testing process builder in production.

Confession #368
We discovered Workflows and Validation Rules with open conditions and
other workflows with overlapping/contradicting conditions on same object.
Confession #463
I learned the hard way – when using flow, NEVER put an action object
(lookup, create, update, or delete) in a loop, unless you are 100% sure it’s
only going to loop a handful of records…and even then… (add reasonable
criteria please!)
Confession #460
I worked with a Salesforce Admin who decided to update a field on all
contact records which had multiple ProcessBuilderW + Flows on and
forgot to bulk batch the update or tell anyone and created nearly 80k of
monitoring error messages when the updates failed which the out of hours
on call team had no idea what they were or where they came from 🙁 took
nearly a week to resolve and update properly.
