4. Introduction-
The National Service Scheme is an Indian Government
sponsored public service programme coducted by the
department of youth affairs & sports of the Govt. of
India popularly known as NSS.The scheme was
launched in Gandhi ji’s century year,1969.And it
developing students personality through community
services.
NSS is a volunteer association of young people in
college,Universities & +2 level working for campus
community linkage.The cardinal principal of NSS is
that it is organized by the students themselves & both
students and teachers through their combined
participation in community services.It is a sense of
environment in the tasks of nation building.
5. After indepdence the university grand commission headed by
S.Radha Krishnan recommended the introduction of voluntury
National Service in academic institutions.This idea was taken
considered by the Central Advisory Board of Education(CBSE)
of it’s meeting in January 1950 after examine the idea & the
experince of oter country in this field.
The Board recommended that students and teachers should
devote time to voluntury Mannual Work.In draft first five
years plan adopted by the Government in 1952,they need for
social and labour service by Indian students for one year was
stressed.In 1958,Jawaharlal Nehru in a letter to C.M.’s
considered the idea of social services as a pre-requisite for
graduation.He directed the ministry of education to formulate
a suitable scheme for theintroduction of National Service into
academic institutions.
6. In May 1969,a conference of student representation(of
universities or institutions of higher education)
convened by the Ministry of education and the
university grants commissions also agreed that NSS
woulde be an instrument for National integration.On
24th Sept 1969,Union Education Minister VKRV Rao
launch the NSS at 37 Universities in all states.
7. The program aims to include social
welfare in students and to provide
service without bias NSS volunteer
work to insure that everyone who is
needy gets help to enhance their
standard of living and lead a life of
dignity ; In doing to volunteers
learn from people in villages how to
lead a good life. Despite a scarcity
of resources; It also provides help
in natural and man-made disasters
by providing food clothing and first
aid to the disaster victim.
8. In 1959; the draft outline of their scheme was placed
before a conference of state Education Minister . The
conference agreed on the urgent need for a workable
scheme for national service and suggested the
appointment of a community to workout details of the
proposed object of project .
9. The Education commission [headed by D.S
Party] recommended that students at every
stage of commission should be associated with
same form of social service . This was taken in
to account by the state education minister s
during their April 1967 conference they
recommended that universities students could
join the National Service Scheme.
10. The symbol for the NSS has been based on the giant
Rath wheel of the world famous Konark sun
temple(the black pagoda ) situated in Orissa, India.
The wheel portrays the cycle of creation
,preservation and release and signifies the
movement in life across time and space , The symbol
thus stand for continuity as well as change and
implies the continuous striving of NSS for social
change.

This reflects the essence of democratic living
and upholds the need selfness service and
appreciation of the others persons points of
view and also show consideration for the
fellow human beings .It unless that the
welfare of at society on the whole . Therefore
it should be the Aim of the NSS to demonstrate
this motto in its day to day program .
