east from Aegean Sea, west from Ionian Sea, south from Mediterranean
Sea and north from Albania, F.Y.R.O.M, Bulgaria and Turkey. It’s
lengthen is 131.986 square kilometers and from which, 106.778 are
continental section and the rest of them are insular section. Its population
is about 11.153.880 inhabitants according to the last census in 2001. The
capital of Greece is Athens and the second largest city is Thessaloniki.
The official language of the state is Greek and the majority of the
population is Greek and Christian Orthodox in the religion. The Greeks
are welcoming people famous for their insight. The most representative
products of our country is Greek “feta” (a kind of white cheese),
tzatziki, brandy Metaxas, ouzo, good wine, … mousaka, … souvlaki,
and …sirtaki (a sort of Greek dance).
Representative Products
Wine, brandy, tsipouro, ouzo, honey, forest’s fruits, beans, nuts, onions,
garlics, corn, feta and yellow cheese, sausages, home made sweets ,pies
and marmelades, hand made carpets, many species of fruits and vegetables,
herbs, traxanas (a kind of pasta), olive oil and olives are some of Greek
products also.
Geographic information
Greece is generally mountainous country and is considered one of the
most mountainous countries but in essence, the whole country is a large
peninsula and has a rich dismemberment.
High or low mountains across the whole country, from the west is the
mountain range of Pintos, which is the continuity of Deinarikon Alpine,
from the North is the Rhodope Mountains, and the tallest mountain in the
east of the country the mountain Olympus with a height of 2.917m
(domicile of 12 Gods of ancient Greek mythology). Among the mountains
seem to be waiting beautiful valleys such as the Valley of Tempe and
fertile plains such as Thessaly, Arta, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace and
Thessaloniki. There are also several lakes such as the lake of Kerkinis, big
and small
Prespas, Trixonida, Bolbis, Lake Ylike, Marathon, etc.
The rivers of Greece are small and have a variation in the level, while none
of these is navigable. However, rivers are important for the economy of the
country because the water irrigate the most parts of the land and move
multiple Power Stations. The largest river in Greece is Evros and follows
Strimonas Nestos, Aksios, Aliakmon, Pinios, Acheloos, Arachthos, Eurotas
e.t.c.
Beautiful forests, mainly fir, pine, oaks and beeches embellish most
mountains of the country, while in Prefecture of .Drama is the only virgin
forest in whole Europe, the forest of Frahtou.
The coastline of Greece is full of coves, ports, peninsulas (such as
Halkidiki, Magnesia and Messinia) and beautiful capes (as the Cape of
Sounio).
The country's largest port is the port of Piraeus and follows the port of
Thessaloniki, Patrai, Igoumenitsa, Corfu, Crete, Rhodes and a bunch of
other because almost all the coastline of both the mainland and the insular
section are accessible and are used for the handling of passengers and
goods.
In Greece there are too many islands from which only 151 is residential
and the larger is Crete and follows Evvoia. From the best-known Islands
are Rhodes, Corfu, Cephalonia, Mytilini, Santorin, Skiathos, Kos,
Samothrace, Lefkada, Samos, Naxos, Paros, Mykonos and a bunch of other
smaller or larger islands, cosmopolitan or not, which overwhelmed by local
and foreign tourists each summer, famous for the purity of water in the
blue coasts.
The climate of Greece is temperate with mild winters and high
temperatures in summer. The average annual temperature is 16-19C and
snow is rare in the islands and the south of the country, in contrast with the
central and northern Greece, where snowfalls are frequently but without
causing any particular problems.
The Greek flora is known as one of the richest between the countries of
Europe and includes 6,000 species of plants from which the 1100 are
endemic that is that they don't exist anywhere else on Earth and that is
quite interesting. The country's fauna is composed by 23.130 species of
birds and animals and 3500 marine species. There are also 12 National
Forests, 2 National Marine parks (for the protection of the seal
Monachus-Monachus and sea turtle Caretta-Caretta) and 8 National
Hydrotropic parks, in order to protect better the flora and fauna of the
country, because several species of both categories are the find refuge in
our country.
