Collecting Evidence Criminalistics IP2 Name Class Date Professor Collecting Evidence at the Crime Scene Physical evidence is pivotal to solving crimes and for many juries proving the guilt of the criminal suspect. Properly collecting the evidence will protect it from becoming damaged or destroyed at the crime scene and will ensure it admissibility in the court process. Physical evidence us especially important at the crime scene. This evidence points to what happened to the victim and who is responsible for committing the crime. The current crime scene contains evidence of a homicide. The evidence located at the scene includes drying blood on the floor,, a handgun and several shell casing near the victim, and several hairs that are still in the hand of your deceased victim. Collecting Drying Blood Blood is important evidence that can yield important information, such as a DNA profile. This DNA profile can be matched to a criminal suspect providing the court with irrefutable evidence of guilt. Blood evidence can also describe what occurred at the scene. Before collecting drying blood the evidence must be documented. Documenting the blood involves carefully photographing the evidence to scale before beginning the collection process. Photographing the evidence where it was located at the scene and from every angle will ensure the evidence can be validated and then as evidence in the court case. Drying blood is delicate evidence that must be collected following tried and true collection methods. If possible the drying blood should be left to completely dry and then be scraped up using a scalpel and placed in an evidence envelope. The blood evidence still drying on the floor will be wiped up by the criminal investigator using a gauze pad (Shiro, 2006). The gauze pad will then be placed in an evidence envelope and carefully labeled before being transported to the crime scene. Properly labeling the evidence before it leaves the scene heading to the crime lab is very important. This label provides investigators with important information about the crime scene that will be relayed in a court of law. On the label will be the name of the crime scene investigator, time and date, where evidence was located, and how it was collected. When this information is missing the evidence cannot be authenticated in a court of law. When evidence cannot be authenticated through the chain of evidence it will not be eligible to be used as evidence against the criminal defendant in a court of law. Once the evidence reaches the lab a serologist will analyze the blood in order to try to develop a DNA profile. The serologist will conduct presumptive tests first to identify the specific fluid and to conduct other preliminary tests (McDonald, 2012). These tests will provide information about blood type and the type of biological evidence before conducting a DNA analysis. This analysis will be pivotal to potentially providing physical evidence .

A forensic psychologist plays a valuable role in the criminal justice system, even more so at a crime scene. Though not dealing directly with bodies or physical evidence, a forensic psychology practitioner tries to identify a perpetrator using psychological principles and tools.

Facial recognion with familiar people is easy, but trying to recognize someone based only on descripon is challenging. Erik S. Lesser/Associated Press Bullet striaons are disnct impressions that can be used to match bullets to the gun they were fired from. What are some other examples of striaons? Alexandre Meneghini/Associated Press Chapter 7 Pattern Evidence I: General Patterns and Fingerprints Andy Carpenean/Laramie Boomerang/Associated Press Learning Objecves Aer reading this chapter, you should be able to do the following: Describe paern evidence that can be used for idenficaon, individualizaon, and reconstrucon. Explain the collecon and preservaon of paern evidence. Explain how paern evidence is analyzed. Summarize the nature and history of fingerprints and their role in personal idenficaon. Discuss how fingerprint evidence is collected and preserved. Explain how fingerprints are analyzed. Ch. 7 Introducon In this and following chapters, we will discuss paern evidence. Many of the topics concern paerns for individualizaon, including physical paerns, fingerprints, footprints, footwear and re impressions, handwring, firearms and tool mark idenficaon, bitemarks, and bloodstain paerns. This chapter looks closely at physical paerns (broken or torn objects) and fingerprints (a major category of individualizaon paern). Paern evidence can be very important in an invesgaon, because it includes many types of evidence familiar to most people. Some types of paerns can potenally be individualized—that is, aributed to a specific source. In this way, people can be associated with or dissociated from specific places, like scenes, or from other people. Conclusions from paern evidence comparisons are usually more definive than those from trace or chemical evidence, and correspondingly more useful to juries and judges. Paern evidence is examined by the eye, for the most part. No complicated instruments, other than the occasional use of microscopes, are required. Somemes, a paern evidence match can be obvious to anyone, such as in a physical paern match (jigsaw fit), making the evidence easier to present to a court. 7.1 Classificaon of Paern Evidence Paern evidence can be classified into three overarching categories: paerns for idenficaon, paerns for individualizaon, and paerns for reconstrucon. This idea follows by analogy from the three acvies that can comprise the elements of a forensic invesgaon—idenficaon, individualizaon, and reconstrucon—that we discussed in Chapter 1. So, just as we can talk about idenficaon, individualizaon, and reconstrucon as elements of a criminaliscs invesgaon, so in the same way we can talk about paern evidence categories that have these elements as their goals. Idenficaon (or classificaon) paerns, which are used to idenfy things in our everyday environment by general shap

2 WK2 Discussion Question Name Institutional Affiliation Professor Course Date WK2 Discussion Question The typologies I employed to define the killer in the case study are Power/Control Serial Killer and hedonistic. I chose the power/ control killers for the case studies because the killer tended to demonstrate control over the victims before killing them. In the three cases, the bodies were dragged into the place, and Lacerations on the neck showed the victims were probably strangled to death. In addition, the killer seems to have a preferred type of victim: young college girls aged between 20-21years who are weaker than the killer. Hence it was easy to take control of them, which probably made the killer feel more powerful. The killer seems very intelligent and manipulative, using their victims as pawns in a game they only know how to play. Therefore, the crime scenes exhibited a calculated and organized, cautious approach. The murderer exhibits violent behavior by sexually assaulting the victims, and the river is their favored place to dump off the dead. The most probable kind of serial killer to dump their victims' bodies is the power or control murderers (Holmes & Holmes 2009). The hedonistic is the second typology that I employed to define the case, study murderer. In contrast to the rapid killing more typical of other murderers, whose crimes may be regarded as act-focused, this class of hedonistic murderers' crimes is methodical and typically requires some time to complete. (Holmes & Holmes 2009). The three cases portly sexual gratification where the victims were sexually assaulted and tortured by the murderer, which is one of the common attributes of a hedonistic killer. Using profiling to find and capture mass and serial murderers has the benefit of assisting detectives in identifying potential suspects. By analyzing the behavior of known offenders, profilers can develop a profile of what an offender might look like and what kinds of characteristics they may have (Beasley, 2004). This information can then be used to narrow down the pool of suspects in an investigation. In addition, Criminal profiling can assist in reducing the list of potential suspects and implementing strategies that increase the likelihood of an arrest (Holmes & Holmes 2009). Profiling can assist law enforcement in locating a different material or tool when there is hardly any proof at the crime site. A limitation of utilizing profiling to catch serial or mass killers is that it is not always accurate. Many factors often go into why someone commits these crimes, and not all offenders fit neatly into a specific profile (Holmes & Holmes 2009). In addition, according to Douglas et al. (1986), even if an investigator does find someone who fits the profile perfectly, there is no guarantee that this person committed the crime(s) in question. References Beasley, J. O. (2004). Serial murder in America: Case studies of seven offenders. Behavioral.

This is a 2 part assignment PART 1 Deliverable Length: 3-4 pages The challenge of terrorism against the United States led the government to create the Department of Homeland Security with the hope of leveraging federal, state, and local police agencies, intelligence agencies, and immigration agencies to cooperate in communicating findings and creating joint efforts to stop threats of terrorism or confronting a terrorist attack. The current threat of terrorism has made many senators and representatives in Congress think about the United States combining all of its police agencies into one national police organization. The centralization of power would stop the discombobulated nature of the 3 government levels of police and provide a clear, overall standard on how to police not only terrorism acts but crime in general. Please answer the questions below. Give your opinion concerning the topics, and provide examples. Discuss your findings as far as any statistics that you list concerning the victims. You have an opportunity to discuss your thoughts about what options might be taken concerning victims of racial profiling. Be sure to back up your opinions with facts from cited sources. Do you believe that the establishment of terrorism as a crime that can be committed domestically has changed policing? How? Why? Provide examples. Have the number of victims of racial profiling increased over the last decade? What laws and services are available for victims of racial profiling? What other actions might be taken on behalf of victims of racial profiling? Has the Department of Homeland Security helped fight terrorism, or has it simply duplicated the efforts and jurisdictions of other agencies? How has it helped? Be sure to cite all references in APA format. PART 2 Deliverable Length: 2-3 pages When you were attending AIU, you thought of yourself being an undercover narcotics officer or working for a bank as a fraud investigator, but you were initially exposed to the role of a victims' witness assistant during the Criminal Careers course at AIU. Then, your best friend became a victim of a crime of violence after being stalked for several months, and that incident changed your life. As you provided comfort and support to your friend during the judicial process, you were exposed first-hand to the role played by the victims' witness assistant during the criminal judicial process. The role of the victims' witness assistant changed you, and you decided then that you wanted to pursue a career as a victims' rights advocate somewhere. It has been a year since you were able to start your career in the victims' rights advocate position, and every day, you feel that you are making a difference in society and your jurisdiction. The prosecutor for whom you have been working as a victims' witness assistant has had several calls from victims of stalking. Some cases seem more serious than other cases; however, one case that no one in the office thought was seriou.

Criminal/Psychological Profiling Diane Miller Abstract Criminal profiling is not a new concept as variations of it have been used for many years in an effort to understand offenders and facilitate crime solving. As the field of Forensic Nursing grows, the Forensic Nurse plays an important role as a member of the criminal profiling team especially as a Forensic Nurse Examiner. This study will examine the criminal profiling process, the steps leading to the apprehension of the offender and explore the benefits law enforcement agencies can reap by including a Forensic Nurse as a member of their team. Statement of Criminal/Psychological Profiling Although criminal profiling had been used for many years it became a more refined process in the 1970’s when the FBI began conducting research in an effort to provide a better understanding of serial murderers and rapists. The groundwork for this profiling was laid by the FBI’s criminal research project. The FBI’s National Center for the Analysis of Violent crimes assists local, state and federal agencies by providing criminal profiles. Profiling uses deduction to paint a picture of the offender but does not identify him. It does this by focusing on certain behavioral and personality characteristics. Literature Review of Criminal/Psychological Profiling The literature review indicates criminal profiling began informally in the 1940’s, but caught the interest of the FBI after the a profile of the “Mad Bomber” done by a New York psychiatrist, Dr. James Brussel, in the 1950’s proved to be amazingly accurate. In the 1970’s the FBI developed a more refined process in utilizing criminal profiling as an investigative tool. That process continues today at the FBI’s National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime and is instrumental in solving heinous and violent crimes that otherwise could not be solved. The literature review supports the value and importance of criminal profiling today and the role it plays in attaining justice for the victims of violent crime and their families. The principles related to criminal profiling outlined in the literature demonstrate the importance of interpreting crime scene behavior in order to narrow the field of suspects for a particular crime and the accuracy it provides. Criminal/Psychological Profiling Core Forensic Nursing Principles Related to Criminal Profiling Core Principles Related to Criminal Profiling The scientific and social phenomenon of death represents the two primary aspects of death investigation on which the practice and philosophy of forensic nursing science is founded. Experience in forensic nursing and guidelines in death investigation help provide the ways of knowing and critical thinking that determine the basis on which acute case management of questioned deaths can be provided. (Lynch, 2006) Utilizing These Principles in ...

Six Major Causes Of Wrongful Conviction
Six Major Causes Of Wrongful Conviction

“Create your own crime” Project Two The story: A murder has been committed in which there are multiple suspects. You, the investigator, examine the crime scene and find DNA evidence of the perpetrator on the victim. You analyze the DNA and get its fingerprint. You obtain a DNA sample either by luck or through a legal warrant. You compare their DNA to your sample. A positive ID is made from your efforts and with the motive and method linked to the correct suspect you arrest the perpetrator. The assignment: This assignment is much like the project you did during the CSI unit at the beginning of the year. You will use your already created mock crime and present a Power point of how the crime was solved. What will be different is that the previous Ppt only described the initial, preliminary investigation and won’t carry me through the outcome of the crime. This project will summarize the entire mystery. Also, in this investigation there will be multiple suspects biologically related to each other. Thus, you will have to create several motives and plausible opportunities allowing for the killer to commit the crime. Your murderer will have left a sample of his/her DNA on either the victim or the murder weapon: blood, sweat, hair; your choice but there must be a plausible reason for it being there. A murderer’s blood does’t just magically get left behind so be able to explain it. If you need some ideas for how DNA can get left behind, check out this chart I found in the textbook: Which suspect will be arrested will be determined by testing the DNA evidence and comparing it with the suspects’ DNA. You will have to figure out how your investigator gets a sample of their DNA. I doubt the suspects would give it to you voluntarily. You can either obtain a warrant for the DNA (we’ll learn later what you need to do) or you can get lucky and find it as part of your investigation. You will have to include prints of all DNA tested: the evidence that was found at the scene and the samples obtained from your suspects to prove that they match. Obviously, you won’t be able to do an actual DNA test; kits can be expensive. But you can describe how the procedure is done and create mock prints on graph paper. These are what DNA profiles look like: A PCR DNA print A gel electrophorus DNA print Surely, you can make something that looks like one of these by coloring in graph paper. We’ll learn how to do the tests. I will expect a description of the procedure much like how it was part of your story. So, to summarize: You are creating a Powerpoint that will include: 1. A photo and description of the victim, the murder weapon, biological evidence of the perpetrator, and other relevant evidence found at the scene. Multiple slides may be needed but this part doesn’t have to be as detailed as the first presentation. A Final Sketch of the your crime scene needs to be included. 2. Photos, descriptions, and motives of the suspect ...

CRIMINAL PROFILING HAS BEEN EVOLVING MORE AND MORE OVER TIME. CRIMINAL PROFILING IN THE MODERN ERA IS MORE SCIENCE THAN ART. MOST MODERN PROFILING TECHNIQUES ARE BASED ON SCIENCE. THEY DIFFER SIGNIFICANTLY FROM THE WAYS IN WHICH PEOPLE ARE CURRENTLY PROFILED. HOWEVER, THE EVOLUTION OF THE PRESENT-DAY PROFILING METHODS WAS IMPACTED BY THE PAST PROFILING PRACTICES. 2 ONE OF THE CURRENT PROFILING TECHNIQUES, FOR INSTANCE, IS THE GATHERING OF MEDICAL EVIDENCE. 1 IN THIS, A MEDICAL EXPERT IS HIRED TO IDENTIFY THE OFFENDER'S PSYCHOLOGICAL AND BEHAVIORAL TRAITS (FRANCESE, 2019). TRADITIONAL PROFILING METHODS INCLUDED BEHAVIORAL PROFILING. IT IS THE ONE THAT HAD AN IMPACT ON THE PRACTICE OF ACQUIRING CLINICAL EVIDENCE PROFILING. FURTHERMORE, THE CURRENT METHODS OF PROFILING ARE GUIDED BY THE CRITERIA FOR HISTORICAL PROFILING. Consider the idea that criminals may possess certain physical traits. 2 THESE TRAITS ARE USED TO CATEGORIZE CRIMINALS INTO DIFFERENT GROUPS (CHIFFLET, 2015). 1 THESE TRAITS CAN BE USED BY THE CRIMINAL PROFILER TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN MASS MURDERERS AND SERIAL KILLERS. 2 IN ORDER TO IDENTIFY CRIMINAL PROPENSITIES, HISTORICAL PROFILING INCLUDED ASSESSMENTS OF PERSONALITY AND MENTAL CAPACITY. 1 WITH THE EXCEPTION OF APPLYING SCIENTIFIC TECHNIQUES, THE ASSESSMENT IS CARRIED OUT IN ACCORDANCE WITH EXISTING PROFILING STANDARDS. THEY HELP LAW ENFORCEMENT PROFESSIONALS TO APPREHEND OFFENDERS. THE CRIMINAL PROFILES THEY DEVELOP MAKE ARRESTING THE CRIMINALS EASIER. IN DOING THIS, CRIMINAL PROFILER PERFORMS MANY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES. FIRST, THEY REVIEW THE EVIDENCE LYING AT THE CRIME SCENES. THEY REVIEW IT TO GET MANY DETAILS ABOUT THE CRIME. THIS ALSO HELPS TO IDENTIFY THE CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR OF THE CRIMINALS (FRANCES.

In the thrilling conclusion to 2023, ransomware groups had a banner year, really outdoing themselves in the "make everyone's life miserable" department. LockBit 3.0 took gold in the hacking olympics, followed by the plucky upstarts Clop and ALPHV/BlackCat. Apparently, 48% of organizations were feeling left out and decided to get in on the cyber attack action. Business services won the "most likely to get digitally mugged" award, with education and retail nipping at their heels. Hackers expanded their repertoire beyond boring old encryption to the much more exciting world of extortion. The US, UK and Canada took top honors in the "countries most likely to pay up" category. Bitcoins were the currency of choice for discerning hackers, because who doesn't love untraceable money?

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
