2. Supervisor of Elections The Libraries Division partners with the Supervisor of Elections to assist them in carrying out their duties. Voter registration applications are available at all Broward County libraries The applications may be mailed to the Supervisor of Elections office or dropped off at anyBroward County Library. Some libraries are designated as polling places, early voting sites, collection sites or a combination of sites.

4. What is the Census? The census is a count of everyone living in the United States every 10 years. The next census is in 2010. Census data are used to distribute Congressional seats to states, to make decisions about what community services to provide, and to distribute $400 billion in federal funds to local, state and tribal governments each year.

E-Government Electronic government means the use by the Government of web-based Internet applications and other information technologies, combined with processes that implement these technologies, to enhance the access to and delivery of Government information and services to the public, other agencies, and other Government entities; or bring about improvements in Government operations that may include effectiveness, efficiency, service quality, or transformation (PL 107-347). Public libraries are at the forefront of citizens’ ability to access public library provided E-government services. Common e-government requests involve food stamps, subsidized housing, unemployment, immigration processing, and other searches for government aid

6. Prescription Discount Card Program Broward County has launched a discount card program to help consumers cope with the high price of prescription drugs. The County is making free prescription drug discount cards available under a program sponsored by the National Association of Counties (NACo). The cards may be used by all County residents, regardless of age, income, or existing health coverage, and at any participating retail pharmacy. Cards can be picked up at many Broward County government facilities, including parks, libraries, transit facilities, the downtown Governmental Center and the County’s four Family Success Centers. There is no enrollment form, no membership fee and no restrictions or limits on frequency of use. The average discount is 20 percent. Cardholders are eligible for higher discounts on a three-month supply of some medications through mail service.

7. Discount Prescription Card Also Applies to Pet Medications such as Benadryl. There are approximately 360 pharmacies in Broward County that accept the NACo Prescription Discount Card, including: Costco, CVS, Publix, Target, Wal-Mart and Walgreens. Organ Donation Last spring, Broward County Library began a partnership with the Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency to promote organ donation through a countywide essay contest advertised in library branches. (2008) Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency (LAORA), formerly known as University of Miami Organ Procurement Organization, is a non-profit community service organization certified and regulated by the federal government. The agency obtains organs for clinical transplantation throughout southeast Florida and transports them to transplant centers within the United States. LAORA procures an average of 400 organs annually from 66 donor hospitals within the agency’s area of certification. LAORA’s catchment area, designated by the Department of Health and Human Services, is comprised of six counties in South Florida --- Miami-Dade, Broward, Monroe, Palm Beach, Collier and St. Lucie.

9. How to Become a Donor/How to Help Sign Up to become an Organ/Tissue Donor You may call LAORA at 800-232-2892 to request a donor card and donor information. The Florida Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) provides information regarding organ donation. If you choose to become a donor it is then indicated on your driver’s license or identification card.
