3. Data Journalism is not a new
concept
The ‘new’ here is the way it is done.
1. Computer Assisted reporting- often used in
Traditional investigative stories- finding stories in the
data – with or without visualisations
2. Visualising stories- Using the data to tell a story or
explain a complex problem – this will involve graphics or
‘visualisations’
3. Interactive stories- Providing a service or a tool that
tells the reader something personally relevant - school
score cards / tables or simple financial tools and
calculatorsDr. Anubhuti Yadav, Associate Professor, New
Media. Email : anubhutiy@gmail.com 25-01-2015
4. Some tips for Data Journalists
Stories in the numbers vs numbers by themselves
Give your data a human face
Investigative journalism requires collaboration
Its takes time
Don’t waste time fishing – have insights first – or get
the user to help
Clean your data and triple check it – there are
ALWAYS errors
Plan publication and partner with a range of outlets
Always have a page where you explain your
methodology
Be prepared to respond to critics and staff to cover
corrections and feedbackDr. Anubhuti Yadav, Associate Professor, New

5. What makes data journalism different
to the rest of journalism
It is the new possibilities that open up when you
combine the traditional ‘nose for news’ and ability to
tell a compelling story, with the sheer scale and range
of digital information now available.
The focus shifts from being the first one to report to
being the ones telling us what certain development
actually means
Building articles based on facts and insights is a relief.
This means less dependency on guesssing, quotes
etc.
Getting into data journalism offers a future
perspective
Number-Crunching Meets Word-Smithing
Data journalism is bridging the gap between stat
technicians and wordsmiths. Locating outliers and
identifying trends that are not just statistically
significant, but relevant to de-compiling the inherently

21. Questions to ponder upon?
Why schools in J & K do not have their own
buildings?
Why availability of toilets is less in Arunachal
Pradesh?
