2. Subtraction in mathematics means you are
taking something away from a group or
number of things. When you subtract, what
is left in the group becomes less. An example
of a subtraction problem is the following: 5 -
3 = 2.
3. PARTS OF SUBTRACTION PROBLEM
There are three parts
The part you start with is called the
minuend.
The part being taken away is called
the subtrahend.
The part that is left after subtraction
is called the difference
5. Subtraction with Zero;
If we subtract 0 from the number the result
will be as it is i.e same number.
Let us say a girl has five flowers. She gives
no flowers to anyone.
A girl has 5 flowers.
We take away 0 from 5 flowers.
So that the number of flowers with her
now is same as before.
So that 5 - 0 = 5
6. Subtraction
Subtraction is the operation of
taking the difference
d=x-y
of two numbers x and y. Here, x is
called the minuend, y is called the
subtrahend, and the symbol
between the x and y is called the
minus sign. The expression "x-y" is
read "x minus y."
7. Addition vs. Subtraction
Addition and subtraction are closely linked.
Addition is the opposite of subtraction.
For example,
the problem 3 + 2 = 5 can be rewritten as
the subtraction problem 5 - 3 = 2 or 5 - 2
= 3.
if 3 + 2 = 5, then 2 + 3 = 5. In other
words, you can change the order of the
numbers you add and get the same
answer. This cannot be done in
subtraction. For example, 5 - 3 and 3 - 5
do not equal the same value.
9. Names
Other names used in subtraction are Minus, Less,
Difference, Decrease, Take Away, Deduct.
The names of the numbers in a subtraction fact are:
Minuend - Subtrahend = Difference
Minuend − Subtrahend = Difference
Minuend: The number that is to be subtracted from.
Subtrahend: The number that is to be subtracted.
Difference: The result of subtracting one number from
another.
8-3=5
10. Subtracting Larger Numbers
To subtract numbers with more than one digit (such
as "42-25") use any of these methods, choose the
one you prefer:
1. Subtraction with Regrouping (also called
"Borrowing")
2.Quick Subtraction (more complicated, but can be
faster)
3.Subtraction using Addition (also called the
Complements Method)
11. ALL these methods are explain in next video.
Till then take care and Good bye
