Safety in Universe
“HOUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM“
APOORV SINGH CHAUHAN
STARGAZER, STUDENT (M.TECH SAFETY ENGINEERING)
NIT, ROURKELA
Glossary
 Terms used :
 Supernovas – A supernova is a stellar explosion that briefly
outshines an entire galaxy, radiating as much energy as the Sun
or any ordinary star is expected to emit over its entire life span,
before fading from view over several weeks or months.
 Magnetars – It is a type of neutron star with an extremely
powerful magnetic field.
 Neutrinos – Neutrinos are subatomic particles produced by the
decay of radioactive elements and are elementary particles that
lack an electric charge.
 ISS – International Space Station.
 NASA – National Aeronautic Space Agency
Brief Introduction
 Outer space, or simply just space, is the void that exists between
celestial bodies, including the Earth. It is not completely empty, but
consists of a hard vacuum containing a low density of particles,
predominantly a plasma of hydrogen and helium as well as
electromagnetic radiation, magnetic fields, neutrinos dust and
cosmic rays. – Wikipedia.
 Space is a term used to denote the area around us, it may include
our surroundings, our environment, anything. – self definition
 Space is the boundless three-dimensional extent in
which objects and events have relative position and direction.
From when it all started..
Humans from the time they inhabited this planet(Earth) always had
the curiosity of exploring new areas, new places for either new
resources or new beginnings.
Humans (Homo sapiens) are the intelligent most species present
in the universe at this moment. They had the habit of migration to
new places to inhabit. This habit of them lead to explore of many new
things.
Humans are living beings made up of soul, flesh, bones and
blood. But we consider that apart from us there is someone else,
someone more intelligent then us or less intelligent then us.
Let’s start a journey..
History of Space (It’s creation)
We know from our textbooks that space was created due to a big bang that occurred in
space 13.798±0.037 billion years (13.798±0.037)×109 years) trillion of years ago, exact
date is tough to tell or many zeroes are needed.
Measurements of the cosmic background radiation give the cooling time of the universe
since the Big Bang.
This Big Bang created the conditions that favoured the formation of planets and further the
‘Life’.
Big Bang was a phenomenon of explosion of two big stars, a explosion that released so
much huge energy that the present universe exists from it.
“Universe is very beautiful and the beauty of it is so mesmerising that it may then lead you
to Death.” – Anonymous
Facts about Universe/Space
 Universe is still expanding..
 We only know about 1/50th part of it..
 This knowledge Is also not concretely agreeable..
 We are a tiny, tiny, tiny^34 speck somewhere in the universe..
 Universe has no boundary, no edges..
 Universe is basically made up of :
 Dark Energy – 73%
 Dark Matter – 22%
 Organic Matter – 5%
Danger’s in Universe
There are infinite dangers in universe, here I am listing only few : -
 Vacuum Metastability Event
 Exploding Supernovas
 Hypervelocity Stars
 Galactic Cannibalism
 Gamma Ray bursts
 Gamma Ray bursts
 Rogue Black holes
 Cosmic Radiations
 Magnetars
Dangers to Human
► Oxygen- There is no oxygen therefore we wouldn't be able to
breathe without the assistance of machines.
► Gravity- No gravity means that everything will float.
► Food- No food naturally grows in space so we would have to
create some sort of chamber that food can be stored in.
► Temperature- Going into outer space we would get to cold and
freeze to death and if we get to close to the sun we will die of heat.
► Radiation- Unpredictable blasts from the sun.
What is Safety?
 Safety is the state of being "safe" (from French sauf), the
condition of being protected against physical, social, spiritual,
financial, political, emotional, occupational, psychological,
educational or other types or consequences of failure,
damage, error, accidents, harm or any other event which could
be considered non-desirable – Wikipedia.
 Safety in universe tends to protect us from the unimaginable
and infinite objects that will destroy us.
Why is Safety needed in Universe?
 Universe is an ever expanding field and we as humans have the
need to explore and the urge to explore which makes us more
dangerous.
 The earth is being protected by atmosphere from many harmful
radiations of the universe, this is safety from earth’s part.
 In future, we have to move out of the earth to explore and harness
new resources or energies to sustain life on earth.
 There is no chance of error in universe as a tiniest error or near
miss can cause huge damage.
Why to ponder over Universe?
 Universe presents us with opportunities that are unlimited.
 Imagine, we are able to tap into the huge energy of supernovas or
galaxy collisions or magnetars and thus on earth we may never run
out of energy, we can even travel in universe to explore new
horizons. This energy lies in the vastness of universe, which is still
expanding.
Future Safety
 The below mentioned contents are confidential or fictious :
 We are able to develop laser guns able to break asteroids or
comets hitting the earth or our ISS.
 We are able to deploy spacecraft's or star ships to counter new
objects.
 We are able to harness new energies in a safe way.
 We are travelling in space through worm holes in a safe
medium.
 We are able to witness new life at other planets or exoplanets.
 We come to know that we are not the only living species in the
universe, hence safety or protection is needed.
Analysis
 Coming to the analysis part,
 The contents in front of us are immense and huge, so huge that
we can only imagine them .
Universe is an ever expanding field which provides us with
endless opportunities to explore, harness and inhabit.
The above presented contents tend to take you all to the path or
journey to a very very small part of universe, it is so small that we
know only about 1/50th part of it.
The analysis report presented below is entirely on my imagination basis and has no correlation with anyone -
Universe is a term which states things that encompass us or comprises us.
My analysis of universe, it’s present and future is :
Universe is huge, infinite and silent killer but it still has unexplored or
unharnessed resources. We as humans have to explore but in safe manner as
our lives are precious. Till the time, new living species are not found, it is
considered that we may be the only inhabitants on this universe.
Or
Maybe we are just a small speck on the universe, what if we all are
imagining wrong, what if the Big Bang Theory is no the correct way for us,
what if like the big Bang, many Big Bangs happened at that instant and we
may just belong to a tiniest universe which we are considering so enormous.
We as humans have infinite imagination capabilities, hope to see in Future
that we are able to develop Space travel in safe manner and this may lead us
to new possibilities.
Conclusion
 Universe is dangerous, lethal, silent killer, harmful but at the end it
is still the universe in which we live in. The universe presents us
with immense observational opportunities through which we may
develop ourselves and that will surely lead us to be better persons
and to be safe.
Concluding, the above presentation was just to show you a part(very
small part) of the universe, how we can learn from it to be safe, better
organised and at the end a better human beings.
Remember : ‘At the end we are just humans’
Opportunities for Safety Officer
For Safety Officers or engineers there are numerous opportunities
such as : -
1. In NASA, ISRO, ESA safety is must, a zero accident theory they
follow because even a small mistake can cause huge damage both
financially and mentally.
2. The shuttles or Launching vehicles are to be made perfect as if they
are reusable then while entering into the earth’s atmosphere they
will burn and may cause explosion.
3. Safety begins from the moment of design or plan to the execution
of the program.
