2. A native of India, radiologist Dr. AppaRao Mukkamala
contributes to his community as president of the
Chinmaya Mission West. Alongside his wife, Dr.
Sumathi Mukkamala, Dr. AppaRao Mukkamala also
stands out as a founder of the Chinmaya Vijaya
Orphanage.
Established as a loving home for girls, the Chinmaya
Vijaya orphanage tends to its charges' physical,
mental, social, and emotional well-being. The girls
enjoy a healthful upbringing that includes a nutritious
vegetarian diet and a values-centered education that
teaches them to live as responsible citizens of the
world community.
3. To enhance this focus on social skills, the orphanage
has built six on-site cottages for senior citizens, who
live side by side with the girls and support them in
their education. In turn, the girls help their elder
neighbors with daily living tasks, thus learning of the
give-and-take necessary to create community.
Founded in 2007, the Chinmaya Vijaya orphanage
welcomes girls between the ages of 4 and 11 years
who have no homes of their own. The orphanage
commits to caring for each child until she graduates,
marries, or accepts a job. Operated by the Chinmaya
Vijaya Organization for Rural Development (CORD)
USA, the orphanage has the resources to provide care
to 160 children.
