Introduction of mbed Connect Asia
For many of you, this may be your first mbed Connect event.
You are coming from all parts of Asia and thank you so much for taking out the time from your busy schedule to come here.
I hope that you will leave the event today with great ARM mbed IoT learning experience and friendships built among IoT industry peers.
Speaking of IoT, let’s take a look at the industry overview.
Like many of you, most people often wonder where IoT opportunities are.
There is so much hype, yet it seems like we are so remote from monetizing the opportunities.
This morning, during his keynote speech, “Building the Next Generation IoT for a global ecosystem”
Michael Horne, ARM’s VP of Sales and Marketing and Deputy GM of ARM IoTBU, will discuss some of our observations.
From Gartner’s research report and Economist Intelligence Unit report, we have also observed the following statistics:
50% of IoT companies will be less than 3 years old by 2018.
We are pleased to have ARM Accelerator’s CEO, Andy Chen, to give us a discussion of the what they see at the startup scene.

This morning, during Industry Panel Discussion, we will also have opportunity discussions by:
ARM mbed partners that are IoT industry players such as ST, Baidu, Lierda, and Minew Tech,
Xiamen City IoT Research Center, will also provide their view on how Chinese government is supporting IoT industry development.

As a precursor to the industry overview:
There have been lots of predictions about IoT over the years. I really like this one from Gartner.
But we also wanted to get some hard data on what was going on in the industry… EIU report.
The Internet of things business Index: a quiet revolution gathers pace is an Economist Intelligence Unit report, sponsored by ARM. It is intended to gauge the current and future use of the Internet of things by the global business community.
So What about all of you? What are you doing and what are the biggest challenges?
This report draws on two main sources for its research and findings. In June 2013, The Economist Intelligence Unit surveyed 779 senior business executives based in 71 countries.
Several insights from the report
30% Believe it will unlock new opportunities
29% Believe it will inspire something new
95% (resoundingly) expect to be using IoT.
Some of the key triggers that are bring about this revolution
Cost of sensors and actuators
RFID identification tags – fallen by 40%, over last 18 months
now about US$0.10/tag
MEMS devices – fallen by 80-90% over past 5 years
WiFi routers once $200 dollars are now $10.
Haier appliances says this is a cost point they can absorb to create networked appliances
Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPV6)
Extends the number of unique IP address and there by enabling cloud data storage and analytics
Smartphone and Tablets
Mobile computing allows rendering and consumption of software as a service (SaaS) examples: healthcare, and security
Some of the results from this survey have been used to create the inaugural Internet of things business index, featured in this report. Alongside the survey the EIU conducted a series of in-depth interviews with senior executives and experts.

ARM ecosystem produced over 15B devices
Means on average, everyone had 2 new ARM devices
Some may disagree, but I would like to think that we know the electronic device business very well.
What we have been researching and attempting to solve, is the creation of a unified device management platform to really help our ecosystem partners grow in the IoT space.
This year, we are pleased to announce that mbed Cloud would help all of us get there over the next few years.
We do this by collaborating, not competing with cloud service providers such as IBM Watson, Azure, AWS by focusing our role providing device security management service, while they focus on data storage and data application development. In this manner, our OEM partners can easily work with the integrated economic values we provide.
To learn more about mbed OS, mbed Cloud products and technologies, we have an exciting afternoon of technology tracks led by ARM IoTBU’s products and engineering team leaders for your learning experience.

We’re setting out to solve the hard problem of managing devices in a multi-cloud world. We understand devices very well, as the ARM partnership has shipped over 15B devices in 2015 alone.
mbed Cloud takes care of managing those devices, including the Connecting, Securing and Updating of them – freeing up our OEM customers to focus on what they do best, which is to write the device and cloud applications, in any cloud environment they choose.
We have strong partnerships with all Cloud providers that our OEM customers use, and mbed Cloud is compatible with all Cloud environments.
Growing at more than 30% every year, we are pleased to have over 200,000 ARM mbed developers worldwide.
The global open source ARM mbed developer community is the driving force of our product development, as we participate in the sharing economy. This is fundamental to our belief that technology collaboration is necessary for driving product excellence. Isolated, we fail. United, we succeed.
In late afternoon today, there will be technical workshops for developing mbed devices.
We are pleased to announce that ARM mbed ecosystem now has 66 official partners, with 15 new ones joining our mbed family in 2016.

This 2016 “Best Localized IoT Solution” award from China’s Ministry of Industry is an example of our persistent investment of ARM mbed in China. We understand the importance of meeting local regulatory framework, and will continue to work with localization.
