  1. RED HAT CORPORATE PRESENTATION SPEAKER NOTES 17 November 2011 Questions? Comments? Contact Nick Carr <ncarr@redhat.com>
  2. The goal of this presentation is to provide a general, high-level overview of Red Hat as an IT solutions supplier. The intended audience is the CIO or high-level IT manager. Somebody who needs to understand the scale/scope of Red Hat, who has purchasing authority, and who wants to know that he will not be fired for buying Red Hat. That Red Hat products/solutions are a prudent purchase for a long-haul, mission-critical deployment. The presentation does not get into significant technical detail - it is expected that this will be done in presentations created by Business Units (BU) and other groups. The presentation will set the scene for Red Hat as a top tier, global, strategic IT supplier.
  3. This introductory slide provides some thumbnail facts about Red Hat. In 2011/2012 we are poised to become a $1B company. (Note that in 2010 there were only 34 software companies worldwide with revenues over one billion dollars, so we are a long way from the small startup that we used to be.) Please be careful to not use forward-looking (future prediction) statements. We have grown rapidly and consistently, even during recent world economic downturns. With over 3,700 employees (as of Feb 28th, 2011), we have the size, scale, capacity to meet customers' needs. The picture of CEO Jim Whitehurst is from a TV appearance on "Mad Money" a well-known American financial program. Other GEOs may wish to switch this with a local picture. Note that along the bottom of the slide is a customer testimonial. We have hundreds of customer testimonials, so the presentation puts one in a "ticker" at the bottom of every slide.
  4. This important slide attempts to summarize Red Hat's business in three steps: (1) W hat we do (2) W hat the benefits are (3) H ow we do it The issue, of course, is that every vendor positions its products as wonderful, using the same words that we use. Customers hear the same story all the time. Red Hat's position is that we do everything the proprietary vendors do, but we do it with better price/performance, with better quality, with faster technology adoption, and we don't lock customers in. The point to make is that open source is *not* what Red Hat does. Open source is *how* we do what we do. Customers don't want open source software just for itself, they want the features that open source software offers. What we do: We supply enterprise-strength, mission critical, software and services in today's most important and dynamic IT areas: Cloud, Middleware, Operating systems, Virtualization, and now, with the October 2011 acquisition of Gluster, scale-out Storage. What are the benefits? Better price/performance Better quality, stability, robustness Faster adoption of new technologies Operational flexibility, no vendor lock-in How do we do it? We use an open source development model. 1 of 2
  5. So: Red Hat is in business to supply world-class enterprise computing solutions that reduce costs, improve performance, reliability, security, etc. That's what we do. Red Hat has demonstrated that open source is a development model which produces higher quality products than the standard proprietary development model. Open source development costs are spread across a huge vendor ecosystem, resulting in cost savings for everybody, including customers. We have shown that open source is an effective way to produce high-quality, high-performance software. Our growth demonstrates the model's success. Note that words such as "cost," "price" and "cheaper" can be dangerous, because competitors can always find some way to look cheaper than we do, if that's what the customer is looking for. It's safer to use "price/performance." In this case "performance" does not mean "faster", it means overall performance in terms of security, stability, availability, scalability, and every other dimension. It's the performance of the total solution, not the raw speed. So, for example, better price/performance can mean fewer support calls, thereby reducing downtime and improving system availability. 2 of 2
  6. This slide provides an overview of Red Hat financials. The numbers are accurate as of Q3CY2011. The growth in revenue speaks for itself. Very few companies are growing as quickly or successfully as Red Hat. As of Q3CY2011 we have had 38 quarters of growth. Other companies may point to continuous annual growth, with occasional poor quarters being obscured, but Red Hat has been growing every quarter. The slide also shows our worldwide coverage, with a geographic breakdown. This is important for EMEA and APAC audiences - we are not simply a North American company. It is important to emphasize that our international presence is not just for sales and support/consulting. Red Hat does engineering, documentation, training, internationalization, etc. spread across locations around the world. Examples could include Virtualization in Israel, hardware certification in Beijing, internationalized documentation in Melbourne, sustaining engineering in the Czech Republic. The slide also shows our sales Channel/Direct split. This illustrates for potential partners that we are a great company to partner with, and that was are serious about our channel play. Over 80% of Fortune 500 companies are using Red Hat software in their business. This illustrates our scope (deployments in every vertical market) and capabilities. (Numbers from SEC 10-Q/K filings and Charlie Peters' Financial Analyst presentation at the 2010 Red Hat Summit.)
  7. The purpose of this slide is to illustrate the breadth and depth of Red Hat's vertical market coverage. Approximately 40% of our business is in four large verticals - Financial Services (12%), Telco (9%), Government (9%), Technology/Media (11%). This is impressive because these are extremely demanding sectors that do not choose second tier vendors or solutions. They want the best and fastest, and can afford it. And they choose Red Hat. (Percentages from Charlie Peters' Financial Analyst briefing at the 2010 Red Hat Summit.) Note that the Financial Services, Telco, Government, Technology/Media percentages are derived solely from deals of over $100K, so smaller deals in these verticals will be reflected in the Other segment. On the other hand, 60% of Red Hat revenues are spread across other verticals. So we are active in Healthcare, Manufacturing, Retail, Transportation, Oil/Gas and so on. So, the message is - Red Hat offers breadth and depth.
  8. This slide shows the results of two recent reports – by Forbes Magazine and by Investors Business Daily – ranking the top 10 most innovative and rapidly developing companies. Red Hat ranked #7 in both reports. This is an excellent result because the surveys were not simply restricted to the software business, but to all businesses. Note that the Forbes Innovation ranking was for “growth” companies – those with a market cap of less than $10B. Doing business with Red Hat is doing business with a market leader, an innovator, and a fast growing success story!
  9. Most audiences do not want to see slides full of customer logos. Every IT vendor can produce these. So this presentation provides just three customer logo slides focused on particular themes. A top level "big 4" customer references - Sabre Holdings, Salesforce.com, NYSE (New York Stock Exchange), Marriott A second top level "big 4" slide with one customer per region . A third top level "big 5" slide with one customer per vertical . Don't forget, there is a testimonial at the bottom of every slide designed to emphasize Red Hat's large customer base. Note that per-product customer reference slides are not provided - these should be part of any product-specific presentation.
  10. This is the “one customer per major vertical” customer reference slide.
  11. This is the “one customer per geographic region” customer reference slide.
  12. This slide provides data and quotes from IDC & Gartner. Gartner is the world's largest IT industry analst group, headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut, USA. The quotes on the right clearly describe how widespread the usage of open source software is projected to be. The quotes are directly from the sourced Gartner report. On the left , the IDC data shows the projected growth of open source applications (including middleware, at the top) and infrastructure (including virtualization and operating systems, at the bottom). IDC is the world's second largest IT industry analyst group, headquartered in Framingham, Massachusetts, USA. As can be seen, the CAGR (Compound Average Growth Rate) for open source software, at over 20%, far exceeds that of other environments, which are all less than 10%. Note that these rates are purely for paid open source software, and do not reflect usage of non-paid open source software.
  13. This slide is dedicated to showing the IDC forecast, out to 2014, for operating system volumes. The slide shows how IDC predicts that the world is moving to two operating systems - Windows and Linux. The other operating systems, such as Unix, are disappearing rapidly. Graphs like this have a very powerful impact on ecosystem providers, such as ISVs. No ISV wants to spend valuable resources porting, testing and maintaining a Unix variant of his product, because the market share is so small. Loss of ISV support accelerates the decline of Unix.
  14. This slide shows the basic process of creating products from open source software. It shows the huge galaxy of open source projects, many of which Red Hat plays the lead role in developing, for example, the Linux kernel or KVM virtualization or JBoss middleware. Red Hat also sponsors two major "consolidation" projects - Fedora and JBoss.org. These provide free, working environments that are used as software development labs and proving grounds for features that may subsequently be incorporated into Red Hat's enterprise-strength, commercial products. The Red Hat product section, to the bottom of the slide, attempts to show that the enterprise solutions are much more than a collection of well-tested open source projects. They are created with a large supporting ecosystem that includes everything from partners to support/maintenance to documentation to training to consulting services to h/w & s/w certifications, and so on. It is the completeness of our ecosystem that distinguishes Red Hat from its competitors.
  15. This slide provides another view of the product creation process. Essentially, it is an expanded view of the bottom section of the previous slide - the part where Red Hat adds its own specific value. The graphic attempts to emphasizes the quality engineering work that is done by Red Hat through its extensive testing and Q/A activities, and the hardware and software certifications that are done. And, finally, the long term, multi-year maintenance and support that Red Hat provides. Long term maintenance is a simple but important feature. If a security bug is discovered in a five year old Red Hat product, we will create and deliver a fix. It may be backported from the upstream code base, or freshly developed. Either way, this feature makes Red Hat products suitable for long-term deployment. Meanwhile, the open source projects have moved forward by many years and are not interested in creating patches for old software. For example, you cannot get patches for five-year-old versions of Fedora - or most other open source products. An important point of the slide is that it shows how other IT vendors contribute to the development of open source software at every step. Individuals can also contribute. While, of course, shared development reduces cost, it is also a powerful way to ensure that new features are closely aligned with customer requirements.
  16. This slide shows how influential Red Hat is as a software development company. Open source has been growing rapidly as a software development model for the past 10-20 years, and Red Hat is the most prolific developer. The chart shows contributions for perhaps the most important of all software -the operating system itself (the Linux kernel). Red Hat is the largest contributor to new kernel features and fixes/enhancements. Other big contributors include Intel, Novell/Attachmate, IBM. Note that, despite their marketing messages to the contrary, Oracle and Canonical/Ubuntu do minimal development - Ubuntu being relegated to the "long tail." The slide illustrates that open source is not developed by an army of volunteers (something that could worry prospective customers). It is developed by the world's leading IT vendors - IBM, Intel, HP, Google, etc. Open source development is overwhelmingly professional. Volunteers/academia certainly play a role, and can make vital contributions in the areas of newly emerging technologies and research. However, the slide also shows a very long tail of open source developers (over 500 companies and individuals, just for the kernel) who apply their talents to any aspect of the kernel as they wish. 1 of 2
  17. And this is repeated for every open source project. Note that Red Hat Enterprise Linux, as an example, comprises several hundred projects, and Red Hat is a major development contributor for many of them, including projects such as KVM, JBoss, Gluster, GFS, etc. This combination of professional and informal development provides a highly dynamic environment. It's so effective that a significant proportion of software development these days is being done using the open source model. Emphasize that the graphic example here - the Linux kernel - is just one of the areas where Red Hat leads. There are many other, perhaps most spectacularly in the JBoss middleware arena, where the communities are smaller and Red Hat's leadership is even more pronounced. It is worth noting that the open source model can be considered a child of the Internet. It is the Internet that has enabled the world-wide collaboration necessary for open source to flourish. It is the same model used by scientists sharing research papers. It is the same model used by Wikipedia. The Internet has allowed open source software to emerge, almost overnight, to displace the old-fashioned proprietary development model. (As a side note, even for projects that it notionally "owns," such as OpenOffice, Oracle only does about 25% of the development, while Red Hat, which has minimal business interest in OpenOffice, still does about 20% of the development. See: http://www.zdnet.com/blog/open-source/oracle-suse-red-hat-drive-70-of-libreoffice-development/9324) 2 of 2
  18. Unlike most other software companies, Red Hat's business is based on a subscription model. This slide shows the major components of the model. The point to be made is that Red Hat was one of the first companies to establish subscriptions as a viable software business model (although leasing was used by IBM for mainframes many years ago). Subscriptions are more in line with today's consumption models, especially with the rapidly emerging cloud computing environments. Describing the subscription model is not as simple as it seems - mostly because customers are used to thinking in terms of licenses and maintenance contracts. Proprietary models require a customer to purchase a one-time license which entitles them to run the software. Then they purchase an annual maintenance contract that provides services and support. With open source customers have to think a little differently. Firstly, remember that open source software is licensed under an open source license model, typically the GPL (GNU Public License). So Red Hat does not impose license costs - there are none. A Red Hat subscription is similar to an annual maintenance contract, except that Red Hat structures it to be fully inclusive in a way that maintenance contracts never are. The subscription pays for the engineering/development/testing of the product. It pays for all the co-development that Red Hat does with partners, including certifications. It pays for unlimited support, maintenance, updates, upgrades, security patches, the customer portal and knowledge base and everything else. Red Hat does not "nickel-and-dime" customers. Once a customer has purchased a subscription he has nothing else to pay for the service level purchased. No hidden costs. 1 of 3
  19. An important point to make is that subscriptions, being all inclusive, include updates and upgrades. This means that Red Hat receives no additional income after shipping a new version of a product - the right to use it is included with every subscription. So new versions are not "revenue events" for Red Hat in the way that they are with most proprietary software companies. This means that Red Hat engineering does not need to produce a new version with a few new features simply to generate some additional revenue. It also means that Red Hat does not need to encourage customers to upgrade. Bottom line: new versions are only released when they are needed, and customers are free to upgrade at their own pace/schedule. (Of course, we encourage customers to run the latest versions of our products because of their capabilities. But we don't do it to generate additional revenue.) The general "lifecycle" (in other words, how long a product is maintained and supported) of Red Hat products is seven years, from shipment of the first "major" release. So, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 , which first shipped in March 2007, is supported until March 2014. Part of this lifecycle includes the release of updates ("minor" releases) - 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, etc. Most products follow this model, although some products may have a five year lifecycle. Also, some products, such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux, provide a subscription option that allows customers to extend the seven year lifecycle to ten years (hence the 7+3 on the slide). 2 of 3
  20. Emphasize that Red Hat also “owns the problem” when there are multiple vendors involved. We will do the problem isolation and work with our partners to fix a customers problem – with no finger pointing. It is worth noting that some vendors, for example Oracle, claim to offer "lifetime" support, suggesting that their products are supported forever. This is hugely misleading to customers. Oracle has an escape clause that enables it to drop support for one of their Linux versions at any time. Additionally "lifetime" can be translated to mean that there will always be a product available, not that a single version is supported forever. This simplicity makes it easy to do business with Red Hat, and easy to do IT budgeting. We find that customers like the model and find it effective for their needs. And if a subscription expires customers can continue to use the product legally, albeit without the subscription benefits. 3 of 3
  21. This slide is designed to contrast how customers do business with Red Hat and proprietary software companies. It uses Oracle, Microsoft and VMWare as representative of proprietary companies, all of whom are likely to be working competitively against Red Hat. The idea we want to emphasize is that purchasing from Red Hat is much simpler than purchasing from the big proprietary vendors. This is true for many of our customers that have small purchases or purchases through channels. However, as the complexity of our product portfolio has grown the complexity of some large sales has also increased. So the slide refers to "predictable" and "flexible" rather than "simple." Our goal is to offer comprehensive subscriptions that provide everything a customer needs, with no hidden costs or surprises. So if a customer needs to add more users, or more virtual machines, or more memory, he/she is not going to get hit with an additional cost that isn't in the budget. In most cases this is true, although there are a few exceptions. An important point is that subscriptions finance Red Hat's extensive ecosystem of partner certifications - this is expensive to create, and is not offered by any other open source vendor. Using Microsoft's complexity as an example, a Microsoft customer will often need to purchase several items in order to get the solution he needs: a right-to-use license, Client Access Licenses (CALs), Maintenance, Software Assurance, and so on. These scenarios can quickly get complex. 1 of 3
  22. (Note that a lot of Microsoft customers don't worry about CALs because they have already purchased them, so they are a one-time sunk cost, but for other customers they are an additional cost to be considered.) Additionally, competitors may create maintenance portfolios that do or do not include updates and upgrades, or limit the number of support incidences, or require the customer to reproduce problems on non-virtualized systems, and so on. All of these can combine to complicate the task of keeping things running. We like to say that open source has a low cost of entry - it's easy to get it and start deploying it. It also has a low cost of exit - it's easy to switch to another open source product or support vendor. There is almost no lock-in. At least, it's much easier than switching the vendors of proprietary products, which are carefully designed to create powerful lock-in. This, of course, risks that a customer will abandon Red Hat in favor of a lower-cost or free alternative. This is possible, and one of the benefits of purchasing a Red Hat subscription. It is our role to ensure that the benefits of the subscription are well understood, so that customers have no incentive to migrate to another product. On the proprietary vendor side, purchasing models are often more complicated and confusing: For example, Microsoft customers may complain about how difficult it is to stay compliant with Microsoft's rules. In many cases a certification portfolio can prove to be more limited than it first appears. 2 of 3
  23. Another example: Oracle's products are certified for use in a virtualized environmnent, but only if that environment is Oracle's own virtualization product - Oracle VM. Oracle has been vague about the status of using the industry's two leading virtualization products - VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V. Restricting certification to its own products doesn't help customers - it leads to tighter Oracle lock-in and raises the cost of exit. Note that vendors sometimes limit the number of support calls that a customer is entitled to. This results in a negative customer experience, or an unbudgeted cost to purchase additional call entitlements. Meanwhile, Red Hat subscriptions always allow unlimited calls - this could make them more expensive initially, but cheaper in the long run. Budgeting: For many customers, purchasing a software license is a capital expense, while the maintenance contract is an operational expense. (So moving to a Red Hat subscription model would reduce the capital expense to zero, shifting everything to the operational expense budget.) This is often an important differentiator for customers. As a sidenote, we hear reports that some vendors (for example, Oracle) will not offer support in a wide variety of languages, making life difficult for non English speaking countries. Red Hat prides itself for offering fully multi-lingual support capabilities. 3 of 3
  24. Although we emphasize Red Hat's simple/predictable, all inclusive subscription model, we realize that some customers require a different relationship with Red Hat - not everybody wants the same thing. So this slide shows a few of the different relationships that we offer. The most valuable for our customers, and to Red Hat, is where Red Hat acts as a trusted advisor to the customer, helping him/her to have the most successful possible deployment of Red Hat products and services. This is obtained using our Standard and Premium subscriptions (often in conjunction with our consulting services, or with the aid of a Technical Account Manager (TAM)). This accounts for the majority of our business. The TAM service is a particular Red Hat strength. It provides a consistent primary technical contact at Red Hat who works with their customers to understand the ever-changing technology requirements, implementation challenges and support needs within their mission-critical production infrastructure. 1 of 2
  25. For other customers and environments we offer basic Self-Support subscriptions, which simply allow customers to access Red Hat software but have no access to support services. It's the do-it-yourself model. This model is the least profitable for Red Hat and carries the most risk for customers - they have nowhere to turn when things go wrong and they do not have the necessary skills to resolve the problem by themselves. It's worth noting that the cost of a few hours downtime far exceeds the cost of a Red Hat annual subscription. For customers with multiple subscriptions Red Hat offers volume discounts which make do-it-yourself support even less cost effective. We also offer specialized subscriptions for software developers and academia. These vary from product to product, so customers need to talk to their local Red Hat channel to get additional details. For appliance builders we have subscription models that are appropriate for embedded systems. Once again, these vary by product, so talk to your Red Hat channel for details. Finally, we have subscription models that are appropriate for cloud environments, hosters, SIs (system integrators) and MSPs (managed service providers). Needless to say, this is a rapidly growing part of our business. 2 of 2
  26. This slide could be useful for some audiences - but clearly not all. It merely shows how Oracle's Enterprise Linux has made very little progress since it was released, in October 2006. It currently holds less than 2% market share. Discussing Oracle's behavior in the Linux market and its relationship with Red Hat is a very complex issue, best left for the experts in the Platform BU. Please contact Jim Totton for advice on how to handle customers that want to discuss this.
  27. Red Hat's opportunity in the Unix market. For a middleware-focused customer this slide might be worth skipping, otherwise the presentation could be thought too focused on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. This slide is derived from a Gartner survey that asked customers "Will Linux become the new Unix?" The result clearly shows that most respondents believe that Red Hat will take over the Unix market. The data shows why we think that any Unix customer needs to be thinking of moving to Red Hat. As mentioned before, this type of data has a big impact on ISVs, who see declining value in supporting niche Unix operating systems. The numbers on the slide look a little strange. On asking the Gartner analyst to explain them, he answered: "These are weighted results. Each respondent was encouraged to list their three most strategic operating systems. So the values do not have to equal 100%. Some people might assign Red Hat as their #1, #2 or #3 most strategic OS. In each case, the top score was given a weighting of three, the next two and the third choice just one." An important point to make is that, although this slide and the previous one both relate to Red Hat Enterprise Linux, they illustrate trends that we are seeing across all open source areas. So equivalent slides could be provided for middleware and virtualization. Red Hat Enterprise Linux is merely the most developed of our products, so the trend is more pronounced.
  28. Red Hat's opportunity in the Cloud market. This slide shows a simple IDC survey result that highlights the dramatic growth of cloud computing through 2014. Over 70% of respondents think that a third of IT organizations will be in the cloud business one way or another. It is hard for a corporate presentation to keep up with the fast moving cloud market, so this slide is simply an easy way to show how dramatic the impact of cloud is going to be.
  29. This slide provides a simple view of the changing nature of software technology stacks that are challenging IT organizations everywhere today. The Traditional stack, shown on the left, is, of course, well known and understood by IT (and the presentation audience). In the past few years Virtualized environments have entered the mix, adding a new dimension to the complexity of IT deployments. And Clouds are already adding yet another dimension of flexibility, resource optimization and, of course, complexity. It's not a simple left-to-right transition for customers. It's a broader, richer continuum for IT to supply and manage, and end-users to consume. Traditional systems are not going to disappear any time soon. The slide is not trying to show everything that Red Hat delivers - it's showing the growing range of capabilities that the IT industry is providing to customers. Traditional: Looking at the Traditional system we see the classic software stack - well proven and still doing the heavy lifting for many IT deployments today. Virtualized: In the Virtualized stack we see Hypervisors being embedded into, or underneath, the operating system. We all know that Virtualization has caused a shift in deployment models, but it's worth pointing out that other segments of the IT stack have also advanced dramatically. Examples include the concept of "Big Data" - where the explosion of unstructured data (video, audio, tweets, etc.) and the storage technologies to contain it, have created completely new challenges for IT. Caching technology - growing to match the reduction in cost of memory - allied with Solid State Disks is changing how applications are written. 1 of 2
  30. With sophisticated virtualization management and middleware tools, IT departments are now starting to build private clouds that, although local, are able to improve resource management and application deployment. Cloud : Looking at the Cloud stack we are seeing rapid advances at every level. Operating systems, optimized for years for deployment on physical systems, are now also being optimized for use as guests in public clouds, where the hardware is truly opaque - even to the IT organization. The ease with which clouds allow compute resources to be harnessed means that "big data" can be analyzed in ways that were previously impractical. New distributed database technologies are rapidly emerging too. (And these technologies are ofen not being provided by the incumbent gorillas, such as Oracle and EMC.) IaaS solutions are growing to provide consistency across private and public clouds, delivering self-service portals that allow IT consumers to acquire, use and retire compute resources at will. PaaS solutions make it easier for developers to build, deploy and manage applications - while emerging standards allow them to choose and change their supplier at will. 2 of 2
  31. This group of 6 slides provides a simple summary of Red Hat's platform. The presenter should run through these slides as a continuous group. Other presentations by Red Hat's BU product groups go into the details, but the high level message is Red Hat's ability to provide a consistent environment for applications across Physical, Virtual and Cloud environments. This first slide outlines the major areas: Operating system Application/Middleware Management Cloud Storage (with the acquisition of Gluster) The graphic shows "IT Admins" on the left and "Sys Admins" on the right. This reflects the two-tiered nature of IaaS management - one group is responsible for creating the cloud infrastructure (e.g. Amazon EC2, Rackspace), while a second group (the end-user customer) is responsible for consuming the resources, defining and using virtual servers, etc, possibly using a self-service portal.
  32. While it's important to emphasize that Cloud computing is one of the most important areas of focus within Red Hat today. However, it is NOT the ONLY area of focus - our operating system, middleware, virtualization, storage, and services businesses are all under vigorous development, and are vibrant and growing in their own right. However, Cloud is an area where Red Hat sees great opportunity for future growth. This slide highlights our two primary cloud initiatives: Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) - offered via our CloudForms products Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) - offered via our OpenShift service Cloudforms provides tools needed to build and manage an IaaS environment, with significant focus on application lifecycle management. It uses a number of Red Hat-sponsored open source projects, for example: DeltaCloud Openshift is currently a Red Hat hosted service that provides an extremely flexible environment for application developers today, for no cost. In due course commercial OpenShift offerings are expected to be provided. There are three variants of OpenShift, Express, Flex and Power, each of which offers different levels of sophistication. The Cloud BU will provide details on Red Hat's cloud products and services.
  33. The Red Hat middleware layer comprises the JBoss portfolio of products. Customers will often consider JBoss to be just an application server, so it's important to note that the products cover many middleware technologies - portals, SOA, BRMS, etc. The scope of JBoss product family is shown in the Competitive Matrix slide elsewhere in the presentation. We support everything from C and Java to most of [all?] the modern infrastructures and frameworks. JBoss capabilities scale to supporting the largest enterprise applications. The Middleware BU provides details of the entire JBoss portfolio .
  34. The Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating system provides a standardized application environment for physical, virtual and cloud environments. This is a critical capability that enables IT organizations to be flexible in their deployments. Obviously, Red Hat Enterprise Linux is at the center of Red Hat's product family. In previous slides we saw that Linux is the #2 operating system in the world (after Windows), and from other analyst research we know that Red Hat Enterprise Linux is the leading commercial Linux server operating system (see IDC report #227778). As the previous slides showed, it is replacing Unix. It is established as an effective foundation for enterprise clouds. It supports x86 to mainframe, blades to large SMP servers, and has a very large portfolio of certified applications and hardware systems. The point to be made is that Red Hat Enterprise Linux supports enterprise applications that customers need to run their business. (We try to avoid providing a number for how many applications are certified, because competitors simply use a larger number - it's not how many that is important, it's that the applications customers actually need must be available, and with Red Hat Enterprise Linux they are.) (Note, of course, that VMware says the operating system is unimportant - because it doesn't have one. In reality the operating system continues to play a central role in providing a foundation for applications, and in Red Hat's case it's the same regardless of the deployment.)
  35. Red Hat provides a number of technologies that are focused on storage. For many years we have provided optional capabilities for Red Hat Enterprise Linux that can be used to increase scalability and availability (the Scalable Storage & Resilient Storage options). More recently, in October 2011, Red Hat acquired Gluster and, at a stroke, became a leader in the scale-out, distributed, unstructured data business. GlusterFS provides scale-out storage (as distinct from scale-up) that lets users add capacity or performance using software, on hardware they own instead of buying overpriced "enterprise" storage. It provides the object and Hadoop APIs that customers are looking to use in today's big data applications. Gluster technology is designed to handle large environments and the huge, unstructured data stores that are becoming central to today's IT deployments. And, as an open source, software-only solution, designed to run on cost-effective, commodity hardware, it lines up well with Red Hat's core competencies. This differentiates it from many competing products, which require the purchase of specialized, vendor specific hardware. It also offers important customer benefits: lower costs, greater deployment flexibility and reduced vendor lock-in. Gluster is specifically optimized for the demanding needs of large-scale content-centric workloads, rather than for use as a general purpose storage technology. Typical examples would be audio, graphics, video, social media, and large scale data feeds (e.g. Twitter, geophysical/astronomical/financial data, etc.). 1 of 3
  36. Gluster is able to scale environments ranging from an on-premise collection of storage servers to a cluster of virtual machines built on Amazon Machine Images (AMI). The single namespace approach of the Gluster software isolates end-users and applications from the underlying physical structure. Gluster differs from Red Hat's current file system offerings in that it layers above Red Hat's other file systems. It is user-level software that sits above any of the current Red Hat file systems (Ext3/4, XFS, etc.). Gluster is distributed across multiple systems and aggregates the total storage into a single namespace. A Gluster cluster exposes this namespace as an NFS or CIFS mount point that contains every file in the cluster. The benefit of this model is that the underlying storage becomes fully virtualized, and can be distributed as widely as required, including across private and public clouds. Gluster overcomes the typical downside of distributed file systems (performance and scalability degradation caused by metadata management), by using a sophisticated filename algorithm that eliminates the need for metadata servers. Since acquiring Gluster we have seen a huge increase in interest expressed by users & customers. Its IRC channel has set records, and we are booked solid with requests for customer briefings etc. Recurring themes: greater confidence when backed by a big company, allayed fears of acquisition by OSS-hostile company. 2 of 3
  37. In summary, Gluster provides customers with an immediately powerful storage offering, delivered by the world's leading open source solution provider - Red Hat. Cloud has suffered from immaturity or scarcity of storage functionality; GlusterFS can be combined with other Red Hat technologies to provide new functionality both within the cloud (e.g. OpenShift), and beneath it (e.g. RHEV). 3 of 3
  38. Red Hat provides management capabilities for its products - and they are developing rapidly into integrated offerings for Traditional, Virtualized and Public/Private Clouds. The primary products are: Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV ) RHEV provides sophisticated and highly scalable virtualization management. It is able to manage the virtualization that is included in Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Importantly, it also includes a lightweight, appliance-like, virtualization hypervisor for use in cloud environments and highly dynamic virtualization environments. This means that Red Hat offers two virtualization models for customers - (1) RHEL: where virtualization is embedded into the operating system and (2) RHEV: where virtualization is provided as a separate layer under the operating system. Customers will have their own preferences on which model they prefer, but Red Hat would generally recommend RHEL virtualization for stable, single-system, scale-up RHEL application environments, and RHEV for scale-out, fast-changing, multi-system, cloud environments that host a range of different operating systems. Red Hat Satellite For managing large-scale Red Hat Enterprise Linux deployments and clouds. JBoss Operations Network (JON) An integrated management platform that simplifies development, testing, deployment and monitoring of JBoss Enterprise Middleware.
  39. Many potential customers, who are new to Red Hat, simply view Red Hat as a Linux supplier. It is important that Red Hat is viewed as much more than that. This slide shows the breadth of Red Hat's portfolio across the software stack. The idea of the slide is to provide audience members with a list of comparative products, so that they can see where Red Hat is active, without having to learn what all our products do.
  40. This is a very important slide because it illustrates that Red Hat is more than a company that is simply selling open source software and support. We are a "full service" supplier of IT. That means that we can work with customers on other aspects of their deployment, from design, installation, management, staff training, best practices consulting, tuning, security assessments, etc. And we can do this for all our products - including middleware and cloud. The slide shows the three major services components: Red Hat Consulting services, Red Hat Pathways and Red Hat Training. 1 Red Hat Consulting Offers an expansive array of engagements to help customers achieve process efficiencies, take advantage of growth opportunities, maximize return-on-investment, and optimize performance and value: Advisory services: IT Transformation Services Operational Efficiency and Consolidation guidance Large scale migration planning Cloud Readiness Services Open Source Solutions Infrastructure Services: Assessments Quickstarts / Healthchecks Implementations / Migrations IT Consolidation Operational Efficiencies Subject Matter Expertise Middleware & Application Services Middleware Product Services Application Services System Integration Services 1 of 3
  41. 2 Red Hat Pathways Red Hat's branded solution approach to helping customers solve business and technical challenges. Red Hat provides guidance and support in partnership with our customers in a phased-in mentoring style tailored to our customers priorities, resources, and budget. Examples include: IT Consolidation – Focused on rationalizing and consolidating IT systems through a combination of legacy platform migrations and virtualization. Operational Efficiency – Focused on improving the efficiency, flexibility, and reliability of IT infrastructure and processes via process optimization and advanced tooling Cloud Readiness – Focused on readying an organization to move to a private cloud infrastructure and architecting / implementing a cloud solution that meets your specific business and technology drivers. IT Freedom – Focused on providing Best of Breed options to our customers while avoiding vendor lock-in OSS Governance and Solutions – Focused on helping customers develop using Open Source technologies and approaches leveraging and learning the Open Source Model. Mission Critical Solutions – Focused on building mission critical solutions leveraging our strengths around security, performance, and scalability providing customers with reliable offerings that provide a competitive edge to their business. 2 of 3
  42. 3 Red Hat Training The difference between Consulting and Pathways can be a little confusing. Essentially: Pathways is moving to a fixed price model. Today there are a set of predefined 'templates' we use but tailor to a customer's needs that address a specific challenge (server sprawl => IT Consolidation, etc.). So it's a best practice/methodology for specific use case challenges, branded for Red Hat offerings. Consulting is a more traditional service, where many people still want a really smart guy on site working side-by-side with their team. Red Hat's transformation is that we want to provide MORE value thru the solutions/project focused approach while mentoring along the way. Time -tested, industry-acclaimed 12 year history, more than a million customers Large portfolio of courses 25+ courses spanning full product portfolio (RHEL, RHEV, JBoss, Cloud) World-class certifications 8 certifications, including RHCE More than 100,000 Red Hat certified professionals Wide range of delivery options Classroom, Virtual Training, On-sites 3 of 3
  43. As the world's largest supplier of open source products and solutions, it is natural for Red Hat to play an important role in the legal and intellectual property aspects of the open source. For some customers this will be an important aspect of partnering with Red Hat as a trusted vendor, so this slide will be of value. Other customers may not be interested in legal topics, or perhaps would consider the mere fact that the slide exists as a cause for concern. In which case skip the slide! The slide provides a brief summary of the primary three areas of IP management: First: T hat Red Hat provides legal protection with its Open Source Assurance Prgram, which provides a number of assurances for Red Hat subscription customers. Second: Red Hat takes an active role in the ongoing efforts to improve the software patent system. Third: We have committed to not enforce our patents with respect to open source software.
