So said PHF PP Ravikumar in his
discussion on “Wills and their
Implications” last Thursday at the
Rotary Center. What is a will? WILL is a
legal declaration of the intent of a
person with respect to own assets property or finances, which he/she
desires to take effect after death. In its
absence, there can be conflicting
claimants to the assets and the issue
may have to be settled in a court if
there are any complications. The will
comes into effect only after the death
of the executor of the will and can be
revoked or modified any time prior to
his / her death.
Who can make a will? Any person who
is not a minor and is of sound mind can
make a will. A will can be challenged in a
court of law on the grounds that it was
made under coercion or undue
influence. Therefore, it has to be
established that the will was made by
the individual in complete control of his
faculties. One way to do so is to get the
will registered.
Any adult with property / finances can
and should write a will, PP Ravikumar
said. One can make a will on plain
paper, with 2 witnesses. It is not legally
necessary to make the will on stamp
paper. It is advisable to write the will in
one's own handwriting (also called a
holographic will) as the handwriting
also provides additional authentication
in addition to the signatures. The

A living will is a legal document that a
person uses to make known his or her
wishes regarding life prolonging medical
treatments.
A person can make multiple wills for
different assets / properties. If any
corrections, they can be made with proper
counter-signatures. A will can be made to
an only child, and even an unborn child. A
will can be disproportionately distributed.
Registration: Registration of a will is not
compulsory in India. However, registration
implies that the person writing the will and
the witnesses have appeared before the
registering officers who have verified their
identity and attested the same. The will
should be registered in the office of the
sub-registrar of the district in which the
executor resides. The will can also be
deposited with the sub-registrar. Changing
the Will: You can change your will any time
you want to. However, make sure that
when you make a new will, you mention
that this will is the latest with correct
date and that it supersedes all earlier
wills. Attesting Witnesses: The
attesting witness and his or her
spouse should not be a beneficiary
under the terms of your Will. This
might create vested interests and
sometimes make your will invalid.
An organization like the Rotary, for
example, or more specifically, TRF
can be made a benefactor of one's
will, if so desired. PP Ravikumar also
brought out the differences between
a nominee of a bank account and of a
mutual fund.
It is better to have a video and audio
recording of the will-making process
for absolute authenticity, PP
Ravikumar concluded.
It was a great learning experience
and all of us should shed our
inhibitions and write our wills and
ensure peace of mind for all
concerned.

January is Rotary Awareness Month – a
time to learn more about our organization.
The more we're known for our good work,
the more good work we'll be able to do.
Because of The Rotary Foundation,
people around the world know that they
can depend on Rotary in their time of need. And as
Rotarians, it is our responsibility to understand and promote
our Foundation and help keep it strong.
The most important responsibility we have is also the
simplest: It is leading by example. We cannot ask Rotarians
to make our Foundation a priority if we have not made it a
priority ourselves, by making our own donation.
This was the thinking behind President Ron's idea of the
"First Class": In this Rotary year, every
district governor has made a contribution,
in his or her own name, to The Rotary
Foundation. I believe that every Rotary
leader should do the same. We cannot ask
others to do what we are not willing to do
ourselves.
Our goal in The Rotary Foundation has
always been Doing Good in the World, and
we have an organization of people with the
right skills and connections to get the job
done. We have earned the confidence of our
communities and the world. We take our
responsibilities very seriously.

3000 participants. The Hon'ble President of India, the Hon'ble
Prime Minister, Smt. Sonia Gandhi and the Minister of Health have
confirmed their participation in the event. The theme of the
Programme is “A Proud India Celebrates Three Years of Freedom
from Polio”. The Government of India has shown its confidence in
Rotary by asking it to provide support in organizing the Programme.
Rotary has also been asked to invite upto 1000 school students and
500 Rotarians. This is to request you to spare your time to attend
this important Programme.

LIGHT UP ROTARY – theme speech by Gary Huang, RI President 2014-15
Rotary is an organization that has something for
everyone. All over the world, in cities and towns, for
well over a century, Rotarians have come together to
serve. And in the years since Rotary was founded,
countless Rotarians and
others have discovered the joys of Rotary service,
through Rotaract, Interact, Rotary Community Corps,
Youth Exchange, and many other programs.
All of us are part of the family of Rotary. And we have all gained so much
from our Rotary service. We've made friends, helped our communities,
and made the world a better, safer, and healthier place. We've become
part of a truly international network of volunteers, and we've learned
how much we can achieve when we put our differences aside and work
together.
Many of the ideas and values that we cherish in Rotary are not unique to
Rotary. Perhaps the reason Rotary resonates so deeply with me is that I
find many traditional Chinese values reflected in Rotary: values of service
and responsibility, of respect for family and for others. It is not surprising,
then, that the ideas of Confucius so often guide me in my Rotary service.
To me, Confucius was the original Rotarian. More than two thousand
years before Paul Harris was born, he said: To put the world in order, we
must first put the nation in order; to put the nation in order, we must put
the family in order; to put the family in order, we must first set our hearts
right. In Rotary, we set our hearts right by putting Service Above Self. And
we recognize that in order to be ambitious in our service, we must first
care for our own organization and expand our family of Rotary. In 2014-
15, I will ask all of you to Light Up Rotary - by sharing our service,
strengthening our clubs, and letting our light shine in our communities. In
this Rotary year, we will Light Up Rotary by reaching our goal of 1.3 million
Rotarians, bringing in new members while working to keep the members
we have. To do this, we'll need to approach membership in new ways, and
try new ideas. Hold a Rotary Day to give your community a chance to learn
more about Rotary. Remember that Rotary is a family and is for the family:
Encourage your spouse and other family members to consider joining,
and reach out to Youth Exchange and Foundation alumni. Focus on your
own club, and look realistically at why members stay, and why they leave.
What can you do to make being a Rotarian an appealing and attractive
opportunity for busy professionals and those with young families?
We will also Light Up Rotary - and make history - by eradicating polio. Polio
eradication within the next few years is absolutely realistic - if we keep up
our momentum. So tell your friends, associates, and elected officials how
critical it is that we End Polio Now. Donate to the PolioPlus Fund and
encourage others to do so as well. By meeting the newest challenge
issued by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, we can make our money
work /three times as hard. Be an active part of the greatest public-private
health partnership in the history of the world, and share in the pride when
the job is finished.
In 2014-15, as we strengthen our clubs and Light Up Rotary in more than
34,000 communities, our commitment and our service will light up the
world.
