 Pratham is the largest non governmental
  organization working to provide quality
education to the underprivileged children of
  India.
 Pratham was established in 1994 to provide
pre-school education to the children in the
slums of Mumbai city. Since then, the
organization has grown both in scope and
  geographical coverage.
 Vision: To ensure quantum and visible
  improvement in the enrolment and
  learning levels of the underprivileged
  children.
 Mission: Every Child in School and Learning
  Well .
 Unlike most other NGOs which are born out of the
enterprise of only a few individuals, Pratham was
established as a Public Charitable Trust in 1994 by the
Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Greater
Mumbai, UNICEF and several prominent citizens of
    the country.
 Over the years, the network has been expanded to
various other cities where like minded people wanted
to replicate the Pratham experience. Central to this
massive expansion of Pratham’s work has been a
whole new way of approaching the education
problem in India and a new way of implementing
programs to create a national impact. We outline
below the key milestones in Pratham’s journey.
Dr. Madhav Chavan is one of the founders and CEO of Pratham. He holds a
Masters degree in Inorganic Chemistry from Mumbai University and a Ph.D.
degree in Chemistry from the Ohio State University (1983). After a stint as
a post-doctoral fellow and a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of
Houston he returned to India and was appointed Reader in Physical
Chemistry at the University Department of Chemical Technology, University
of Mumbai (1987).
 In 1989 he got involved in the adult literacy work in
the slums of Mumbai. Dr. Chavan has been a visiting
fellow to the Chinese Academy of Sciences
(1986), Queensland University of Technology (1999)
and has lectured on issues in education at various
universities outside India. Dr. Chavan has been a
creative contributor in the field of adult
literacy, elementary education, sanitation, and the
    development sector in general.
Dr. Chavan was awarded the FIE Foundation (India)
award in 1999. He served in the Prime Minister’s
National Advisory Council in 2004-08 and is also a
member of the Governing Council of a new initiative
to rate educational institutions created by the Indian
    rating agency CRISIL.

 The Pratham Council for Vulnerable Children (PCVC -
www.pcvc.org) started its outreach program in Mumbai in
the year 2001. For almost three years the focus was on
working children in the city of Mumbai, who were mainly
found to have been trafficked from different parts of the
country. Facilitation of the task force formation under the
Government of Maharashtra saw the rescue and
rehabilitation of almost 25000 working children in the city.
It was a felt need to trace the roots of these children and
work in the source sending states from where the children
belonged. In this view the work was expanded to the
    source states.

Today, PCVC is operational in 7 states
    (Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Bihar, Uttar
Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa), reaching out to about
15 000 children in urban and rural areas.
 Pratham is a tripartite partnership between
the government, citizens and corporates. Our
work is supported by several national and
 international corporates like

, etc., and multilateral foundations like
Thank you!!!!!
