1. Wiltshire Farm Animal Vets
Farm vets work with animals found on farms such as cows, horses, poultry, sheep and pigs. They
also deal with the less common livestock animals such as bison. They spend their time travelling
from farm to farm, helping sick livestock, checking for diseases and giving advice to farmers on
topics ranging from disease prevention and milk production to breeding.
Although farm vets treat sick animals, much of what they do is to make sure animals don't get
sick in the first place. Apart from giving healthcare advice, and doing routine wok such as hoof
trimming, they can also give vaccinations to help protect against disease.
Sometimes it will be necessary to operate on an animal or prescribe medicine if an animal has
still managed to pick up a disease or have an accident.
If a disease such as foot and mouth or TB comes to an area, the farm vets can carry out screening
to see which animals test positive.
Farmers can also call on the vets to help with the birth of their animals and it is particularly
common for them to assist with the birth of calves, lambs and foals.
Farm vets need to be available at all hours of the day and night because a farmer can have an
emergency at any time. Whilst the non-emergency work can be scheduled into a normal working
day, there needs to be 24 hour cover from a vet for the rest of the time and this is often worked
out by an on-call rota.
Their working conditions are varied and the job involves a lot of outdoor work and work in
unsanitary conditions. There is also an element of danger from the animals because they can kick
the vet when they are scared or unhappy with what is happening to them. Farm, vets will travel
from farm to farm, often covering a wide geographical area and they are a lifeline for farmers
who need to make sure that their animals are in the best possible health at all times.
