4. Charles Bukowski Women
Women is one of Charles Bukowski’s
most famous novels. The book itself is about
the author’s alter ego, Henry Chinaski. Hen-
ry Chinaski is a poet whose career has begun
to take off, and with his newfound fame come
countless women. Women documents Chinaski’s
violent and often alcohol induced relationships
with women. With this cover redesign I wanted
to capture a sense of the era during which the
book was written (the late 1960s, ‘70s, and early
‘80s). The gold and red in the background are
meant to give a masculine feel to the cover. The
women which are merely silhouettes, represent
the countless, almost anonymous, women who
pass through Chinaski’s life. The pattern of cig-
arettes and alcohol bottles elude to the fact that
all of Chinaski’s relationships with these women
take place as he is abusing drugs and alcohol.

6. Creative Juices
Creative Juices is a magazine
which I made up for young profes-
sional creatives. The magazine would
contain articles pertaining to music,
theater, film, art, and design. This
article in particular lists the “Top 10
Creative Hot Spots” in the United
States as ranked by the magazine’s
editors. A typographic illustration of
all the placing cities allowed me to
unify all of these different cities in
one illustration.

8. Hair Product Catalog
This catalog spread is for an
imaginary line of hair care products
called “The Delicious Collection”. Each
page has a food item to represent the
type of products sold on a given page.
The page with the frosted cupcake con-
tains products used for highlighting (or
“frosting”) hair. The page with the cot-
ton candy has various products used to
add volume to hair. The soft colors and
sweet food references were chosen to at-
tract female customers.

10. London Cty Hall Coffe Table Book
To create this coffee table book layout, I rendered
several images of London City Hall using NewTek Light-
wave. There are two exterior views, one during the day
and one at night. There are also two interior shots, again
one taken during the day and one at night.

11. London Cty Hall Coffe Table Contd. Book
For the purposes of this project, I was al-
lowed artistic license in redering the images of the
interior of the building. The article about London
City Hall contains some basic information about
the actual building, including information about
the choice of the buildings shape.
11
12. Green Tree Organics Pasta
This packaging project is for an
imaginary organic foods company. The
packaging was to be 100% recyclable and
eco-friendly. I chose an earthy color palette
to give the packaging a natural aesthetic.
12
14. Bumble Gum
Bumble Gum is a made up product.
This particular gum is naturally sweetened,
thus the nature reference with the bee in the
logo and the namesake Bumble Gum. Bum-
ble Gum would be marketed to all ages. The
gum itself is honeycomb shaped, and reflects
the honeycomb pattern on the packaging.

Little Monsters Snack Foods Packaging
The Little Monsters Snack Foods packaging includes five
varieties of snacks. Each variety has its own monster assigned to
ny geared towards children and teens. This entailed creating a it, and each monster is present on the packaging for its specific
line of characters, packaging, print advertisements, and an in- snack. I chose to hand draw each of the snacks on the packaging
store display. The goal with the character design was to create for a unified aesthetic. I was also careful to pair each monster

the monsters is “The sweetest monsters you’ll ever meet”.

18. Little Monsters Snack Foods Ads
The Little Monsters Snack Foods ads
maintain a visual theme that is present within
the packaging. Each monster is in an ad for their
specific snack, and accompanied by a stripe of
complimentary color. The snack foods are still all
hand drawn images.
18
19. Monster In-Store Display
The monster in-store display is meant
to be placed at the end of an aisle and attract
the attention of children. The playful pose in
which the character peaks around the aisle is
meant to engage children who are shopping
with their parents. There would be a seper-
ate display for each monster and the snack
variety that they represent.

20. Samsung Mercury Advertisement
The objective of this project was to create a
phone and develop an advertisement for a pre-exist-
ing phone company. I was also instructed to take all
of the photographs myself using a peer as a model. I
created the Samsung Mercury, and chose to highlight
its networking capabilities.

22. Soleil Energy Logo
Soleil Energy is a so-
lar energy company. With this
logo I wanted to reference the

modern font to emphasize
cleanliness of this particular
type of energy.

24. African AIDS Foundation Banner Ad
With the African AIDS Foundation Ad, I wanted
to create a powerful ad that would both draw the view-
ers attention, and make them feel emotionally connected
to the images in the ad. The figures appear in the ad as
if they are a typical nuclear family as seen in the United
States, with a father, mother. daughter, and son figure. As
the timer runs, more figures appear, and a message ap-
pears stating “Every 30 seconds, 90 people in Africa con-
tract AIDS”. The ad then zooms out to show Africa, and
as the timer ticks out of control, we see the continent being
consumed by the color red. At the end of the ad appears
the message “Be part of the solution. Donate now to help
find a cure. The African AIDS Foundation”.

With AshleyMGolen.com I
wanted to create a website that both
reflected my personality and demon-
strated my talents and professional-
ism. The factory represents my own
relentless work ethic, and the colored
packages that are being produced
represent my ability to work quickly
and produce good results.
26
28. Polish Heritage Pattern
This pattern was created
to express my Polish heritage. The
stacking dolls are based on stacking
dolls that my Polish Grandmother
owned. The floral pattern is an ex-
traction from a design typically found
on plates in Poland. The yellow disc
represents the Opwatek, which is a
wafer that is shared by Polish families
on Christmas Eve.

30. The Crucible Invitation
This invitation is for a spe-
cial performance of The Crucible. The
performance would take place before
opening night to a limited audience.
There would be fifty invitations sent
out, each one asking the recipient
to bring two guests. The invitation
would consist of a wooden box, that
would contain a printed invitation as
well as a poppet. A poppet is a doll
which is the basis of one character’s
conviction in the play.

32. LadyBug Font
The creation of
the LadyBug font was
a simple creative ty-
pographic exercise. The
objective was to create a
unique, and clean look-
ing font, with two sim-
ple variations.
32
34. Appletons Poster
The objective of the Apple-
ton’s poster was to attract musicians
to a new local venue. The poster
would be displayed in other lo-
cal venues and popular nightspots.
The Moby Dick reference is meant
to evoke the concept of the “great
white whale”, and in this case con-
vince the viewer that to play at this
venue would be a great opportunity.
