At a time when Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav dreams to
play a vital role in the forthcoming general election in 2014, his

they have understood that it was a dream, which wouldn’t be realized
anymore.

According to a report released by the Ministry of Home Affairs,
government of India in November last year, the Uttar Pradesh with 104
incidents topped in the list of communal tension and clashes in 2012,
altogether leaving 34 dead and 456 injured.

Whereas places like Mathura, Bareilly, Pratapgarh, Faizabad,

Highlights of communal riots-2012 in UP

Communal violence broke-out in Kosi Kalan village of Mathura district
on 1 June, killing five persons including three Muslims. More than a
dozen shops were burnt down.

On 23 June, communal riots erupted in Asthan village of Pratapgarh
district. Accusing Muslims youths of rape and murder of a Dalit girl,
46 houses were burnt and a Mosque was also torched. Violence left more
than one hundred and fifty people injured, of which most were women
and children.

Bareilly town witnessed communal clashes on 23July (1st day of
Muslims’ holy month Ramazan). Four including 3 Muslims were killed and
35 Muslims’ shops were looted and burnt. 350 people were accused for
rioting.

Six Muslims including one minor was shot dead by the UP Police on 14
September while they were protesting against the desecration of the
holy Quran in Ghaziabad.

Communal clashes on 24 October during Durga idol immersion spread to
more than six more places across Faizabad. Two persons were killed
and more than 200 houses and business establishments, mostly belonging
to the Muslim community, were torched.

Faizabad is a district that houses Ayodhya, where 15thcentury Babri
Masjid was demolished by the Hindutva extremist groups in 1992 that
led to worst communal violence across the country. Interestingly, not
a single incident was reported in Faizabad that is only 6km away from
Ayodhya.
