1. At a time when Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav dreams to
play a vital role in the forthcoming general election in 2014, his
party’s style of governance is being highly criticized in Uttar
Pradesh as it witnessed more than hundred communal clashes in the year
2012 alone.
People of Uttar Pradesh hoped for a change when Mulayam’s son Akhilesh
Yadav sworn in as chief minister of the state in last march. Members
of minority communities, especially the Muslims, were optimistic about
their safety and security; they envisaged freedom from key social
tribulations- increasing communalism and witch-hunt of Muslim youths
in the name of terror- they were facing since couple of years. Now
they have understood that it was a dream, which wouldn’t be realized
anymore.
According to a report released by the Ministry of Home Affairs,
government of India in November last year, the Uttar Pradesh with 104
incidents topped in the list of communal tension and clashes in 2012,
altogether leaving 34 dead and 456 injured.
Whereas places like Mathura, Bareilly, Pratapgarh, Faizabad,
Moradabad, Ghaziabad, Kanpur, Allahabad and state capital Lucknow
witnessed major riots.

A boy was urinating nearby ablution pond of a Mosque resulting in a
heated argument and later a fight over it.
3 Muslims and 2 Hindus were killed. 16 injured. More than a dozen of
shops were burnt. 171 people including BSP MLC named in FIR
Compensation of Rs. 5 lakh to the families of died persons and 50,000
to the injured was announced
The current status is not known.
23 June-------------Asthan , Pratapgarh
A Dalit girl was raped and murdered allegedly by the Muslim youths.
2. 46 houses of Muslims and one mosque were burnt. More than hundred
people fled away from their houses and took shelters in Madrasa of
other village.
Some police officials have been suspended. Compensation was announced.
Rs. 2.5 lakh compensation has been given by govt. No more details are
available till now

Kanwariays played devotional songs on amplifier near mosque during Ramazan.
Four including 3 Muslims were killed, 35 Muslims’ shops were looted
and burnt. 350 people were accused for rioting.
Four policemen have been suspended.
SP leader Shivpal Yadav gave compensation of Rs. 3 lakh to the
families of deceased.
Rs. 2 lakh compensation from govt. to the families of deceased. Only
Rs. 10,000 for burnt/looted shop owners.
80 percent of the arrestees were Muslims. Many of them are still in jail.

Highlights of communal riots-2012 in UP
Communal violence broke-out in Kosi Kalan village of Mathura district
on 1 June, killing five persons including three Muslims. More than a
dozen shops were burnt down.
On 23 June, communal riots erupted in Asthan village of Pratapgarh
district. Accusing Muslims youths of rape and murder of a Dalit girl,
46 houses were burnt and a Mosque was also torched. Violence left more
than one hundred and fifty people injured, of which most were women
and children.
Bareilly town witnessed communal clashes on 23July (1st day of
Muslims’ holy month Ramazan). Four including 3 Muslims were killed and
4. 35 Muslims’ shops were looted and burnt. 350 people were accused for
rioting.
Six Muslims including one minor was shot dead by the UP Police on 14
September while they were protesting against the desecration of the
holy Quran in Ghaziabad.
Communal clashes on 24 October during Durga idol immersion spread to
more than six more places across Faizabad. Two persons were killed
and more than 200 houses and business establishments, mostly belonging
to the Muslim community, were torched.
Faizabad is a district that houses Ayodhya, where 15thcentury Babri
Masjid was demolished by the Hindutva extremist groups in 1992 that
led to worst communal violence across the country. Interestingly, not
a single incident was reported in Faizabad that is only 6km away from
Ayodhya.
