Packets, routers and ip addresses
1. The internet is a global computer network that
provides a variety of information and communication
services, consisting of interconnected networks using
consistent communication protocols.
2. Domain Names and IP
addresses
Domain Name: the part of a network
address which identifies it as belonging to
a particular domain. E.g. www.google.com
IP address: a unique set of numbers separated by full
stops that identifies each computer using the Internet
Protocol to communicate over a network. E.g. 123.23.234.45.
The relation: The domain name is the address people type
into their web browser, then the domain name then points
to the “real” address. This “real” address is the IP address
which is a series of numbers that points to the site on the
server that contains your web site files.
3. Data Packets and Packet
Switching
Data Packets- A packet is a simple unit of communication
over a digital group. When data has to be transmitted, it is
split into related structures of data. A unit of data is carried
by a packet-switching.
Packet Switching- Packet switching is a mode of data
communication in which a message is split into a number
of parts which are sent individually, over whatever route is
best for each packet, and reassembled at the objective.
4. Functions of Routers
Routers - A router is a device that transfers data from one
network to another. It has the ability to forward data
packets to their destination by the most efficient route.
Functions- A router can exchange protocol information
across networks, and it can also help prevent illegal
interruptions by malware. Routers are also needed to allow
a computer to connect to the internet, as the internet is just
one huge external network.
