Teaching Children With Autism

It is so very important that once diagnosis of autism has been confirmed this a parent,
caregiver or teacher be given all the ideas and knowledge to accept, discover and educate the
autistic child. There is a superior transaction of hints and books on autism available, and
learning all there is to recognize could be a remarkably personalized and rewarding journey,
giving you a heads up on what to expect. You can also empower your knowledge to family
and friends to help them understand what is expected of them. You may have to defend your
decisions and you may even get disapproving looks when out in public with an autistic child.

Your knowledge, education and interaction are a vital piece to this complex condition called
autism. There are many educational based interventions for autistic children such as
developmental or behavioral which may change the child reactions by working on social
skills, communication, or cognitive skills, but they are not a cure only an improvement of
symptoms. Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA). This focuses on modifying behavior by a
system of rewards and in some cases punishments. This is commonly used by trained
therapists creating a highly structured, individualized learning program for the child. It is
noted it should be taught at least four hours per day for any notable significance in behavior.

"Floortime" therapy or DIR (Developmental Individual Difference Relation-Based
intervention) is becoming more widely used today. This intervention stresses emotional
bonding with parent/guardian and child. Floortime stresses developing affection in the child
while trying to close developmental gaps between where the child is and where they should
be. This method is also well structured to the individual and requires at least four hours per
day. Miller Method tries to close the cognitive development gaps between where a child is
and where they should be. This method tries to take the child's point of view and help the
child make sense of their confused environment. Also, to make proper choices in an
environment constrained by routines and rituals. Verbal Behavior.

This is a recent updated version of ABA and stresses techniques to obtain verbalization from
the child. TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and Communication Handicapped
Children) approaches autism with trying to enable success using their own strengths. Daily
Life Therapy focuses on the physical, emotional and intellectual ability of the child enabling
to successfully interact in groups and later in society. Relationship Development Intervention
focuses on helping autistic children to share their life pleasures with others through
interaction and develop emotional connectedness.
